Best movies from the past 6 years?

It seems like every time I watched a movie from the last 12 year's it just wasn't that great. There were a few good movies, but even the good ones sometimes had a bad or short plot chance thrown in or out.

I didn't give a lot of movies a chance, as they became too cliche, over the top (transporter) or just not very good (grown ups)

After the x-men, spider-man movies, I also didn't care to even give such movies like "Iron-Man, Hulk" a chance at all. I still have yet to see Avengers, iron man, thor, captain america of any kind.

Now, I did think Gravity was ok, Prometheus was also pretty good to me, I actually did buy the new riddick but have yet to watch it. I enjoyed Ride Along with Ice cube actually, but I still haven't or don't know of most of the movies from last year, or the last 6 or more years.

Also enjoyed Inception and shutter island...

So, my basic question is actaully, what movies do you guys have on your shelves from the past 6 to 10 years that you actually think are worth watching. My tastes are actually pretty broad...

I can watch horror, suspense, thriller, horror, adventure and just about anything. I love seinfeld,, I like disney movies, so I am fairly open to be quite fair. I like Star wars, 2010 a space odysssey, the thing, korean films, japanese, western, I really like it all, but i still want something with some kind of merrit, even if that is goofy and over the top but I can't seem to fully enjoy movies like the hangover as well.

I'd also like some ideas for movies that are old but also adventure or creative, I love movies like treasure island, or atleast the idea of it. So those kind of ideas are also very welcome.

lastly, I also really enjoy old castles and movie's set in old time periods "viking" "europe" etc Wouldn't bother me if it's a love story, or horror.

A few movies I have considered but haven't bought yet...

new star trek, avengers, captain america 1 (did'nt realize there was a thing, until I read up on 2)
Skyfall (really enjoyed CR!)

I do have Ronin, Riddick 3

I guess I'd also ask about a few movies I'm interested in that I have seen in passing

New Total Recall
new Judge Dread
Arnold/Sly movie (forgot the name)
Taken
Ocean's Eleven? Didn't see any of them.

I also watched the Arnold movie, the Last Stand, thought it was ok for the most part.

I couldn't finish the next to last Fast and the Furious movie, pure trash imo

Cabin in the woods
Prisoners
Star Trek

Star Trek: Into darkness
The Impossible
Upstream Colour

Thanks for the list, I have seen a few of these. I actually saw hellboy and it seemed pretty good actually. So, Hellboy 2 will be something I try to pick up. A lot of the movies you listed I know little about but I'll pick them up and give them a try.

Not sure exactly why, but I didn't enjoy the Black Swan, it seemed like a movie I would like and why I actually attempted this one.

May pick up Skyfall, Star Trek Into Darkness very soon. What is the most low key, but best movie that you would suggest? I like off the wall, gems.

*May pick up Django this week also. Believe it or not, I didn't watch Hobbit too lol, even though I really enjoyed LOTR.

I may get Dredd also, I do love sci fi, I hope it fits the bill. I like seeing and beliving in a world that just isn't there. A lot of movies don't get that right, a few do (maybe something like the Fifth Element) does it. I do miss the creativity, "the strange" of the 80's though.

Upstream Colour is pretty unconventional. Although, it is rather complex. Cabin in the Woods is also fairly unconventional for its Genre.

Didn't see those two yet, but I'll give it another look next time. Ended up picking up Hellboy 2, Dred yesterday. Was considering Looper but didn't. I remember watching a movie last year that I forgot the name of. farm house and traveling. Movie's name has completely slipped my mind, anything ringing any bells? Feel I can't remember what happened in the movie at all but they were in a quarantine type of situation... something about a truck and trying to escape the blast zone. Or I'm mxing up two movies lol

Actually, there was another movie where they had to travel together and were trying to avoid the authorities as well, and was mixing them selves up with different parts of the efforts.. i think that one was about a pregnant woman.. maybe a black woman.. I think the problem is, I wasn't able to watch either of these movies fully at all and I didn't catch their names.

That last one sounds like Children of Men. A fantastic Movie IMO.

Menace's list is pretty good.

I really enjoyed Dredd. If you haven't seen Iron Man yet, I recommend you give it a go. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a pleasant surprise for me, too.

Both new Star Trek films were good, too.

Hmm.

This is tough because I agree, recent films aren't as fantastic because we've been desensitized.

To think of a few that I have enjoyed:
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight Rises
Looper
The Avengers
District 9
The Wrestler
Drive
Warrior

That could be it, honestly.

Some great films I enjoyed from memories:

Hobbit films
Basically all Superhero films, expect Green lantern
Rush
Expendables 1 & 2
World War Z
Loopers
Inception
Django Unchained
Resident Evil films
inglourious bastards
MIB 3
Frozen
Ice ages series
Shrek series
Zero Dark Thirty
Skfall
Planet of Apes
Jason Statham fims
Transformers films
Vin Diesel films
The Girl with the dragon Tattoos (both Swedish & Bond version)
300 (the 2nd one is very bad though)
We are the Millers
Internship
Prisoner
The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

Gonna be hard to remember, but for me, The Raid movies stand head and shoulders over the rest. It's just such a great series. Dredd was another classic for me. Avengers was very memorable. Dark Knight stuff was too. How to Train A Dragon, Frankenweenie, and Paranorman. Tucker and Dale vs Evil and Cabin in the Woods are my favorite horror flicks. I thought the Hobbit movies were pretty boss myself.

yeah, pretty crazy we can't find more good movies from such a long time period. Sure there are some great ones, but we gave up on them lol.

May have to buy looper, I did just buy frozen was pretty good but needed an extra 15 min when she was frozen imo

Will look into a few of these... but mib 3? you sure? Inglourious bastards didn't see that yet, should check it out too.

However, you sure about expendables, man I saw some of the 2nd and it looked like hot garbage.

Cabin in the Woods was great. Highly recommend it. It's a great film in it's own right, but is a wonderful throwback to other great horror franchises, without coming off as cheesy or something.

Menace's list is pretty good.

I really enjoyed Dredd.

Dredd is basically a combination of Robocop and Dirty Harry. It reminded me a lot of the original Robocop in some ways.

I kind of wanted a bit more Blade Runner in it and a look at MegaCity 1, but this is just me nitpicking. I really loved watching Dredd and I wish the new Robocop was more like it.

COSMOPOLIS [2012]

I am very partial to this movie and a sucker for David Cronenberg. I do think that if you enjoyed American Psycho and Fight Club you may also like this unusual road trip movie.

Also, IMO this has a very good soundtrack.

The Skin I Live In [2011]

This is simply a MindFck movie. It's hard to describe without major spoilers, but it has to do with who the person behind the cosmetic surgery mask really is.

NOTE: This is a Spanish film with sub-titles

Good suggestions all around, I do have Dred now so that one is off the list. Excited if it ends up as some of you say with the mixtures.

Skin? Is that Antonio?

Prisoners
Incendies

Sounds pretty good from titles alone. (but... I know.. not a wise thing to go by) Not sure if I can find all these movies now for cheap. but will keep an eye out in the near future. Prison movies in some form are usually well made though.

That sounds pretty interesting, a lot of good suggestions I feel. Well, not sure about mib3 haha.... I think I saw the 2nd, I know I saw the first. Ok... fun movies I guess. Not great though.

I thought Looper was pretty good, not sure if I like the ending or not. Was a few things I would have changed but was a fairly decent movie all around. worth watching for sure.

star, I'm guessing prisoner and prisoners are two dfiferent films?

The Girl with the dragon Tattoos - heard a lot of good things, want to check it out.

I see a few of you seem to enjoy family movies, how is brave. looked pretty nice from the trailer

JOHN DIES AT THE END [2012]

This is kind of silly and very weird, but also just fun and entertaining. Directed by Don Coscarelli who also did Phantasm and Bubba Ho-Tep. Based on the book of the same name John Dies at the End by David Wong which I also recommend.

silly and fun is fine by me, just not grown ups silly.

It doesn't exactly have to just be the last 6 years. I think most of the 2000's I didnt keep up with films or see a lot of them. Hell, any movie from any time is fine. I love really old movies too that are adventure heavy. Sometimes I just have no idea what the names are, but saw them on tv or something.

I remember hearing of meat train but didn't see it, is it gruesome, or more speak and no show. I don't love very bloody, but I guess I can handle it if the movie is good. For example, I have yet to watch the usual suspects... but sometimes just sometimes these movies dont seem as good to new comers as they do to people who watched them near release. That's my personal experience atleast.

All you need to know about Meat Train is it's a Clive Barker movie. It's not quite the gore level of Hellraiser, but it's in the ballpark. I'd compare it to Candyman. The story reminded me of Candyman as well.

Lot's of people being smashed by Vinnie's Hammer and hacked to pieces. I'd say it's mostly lost of severed limbs and heads. It's the subway train to Hell.

prisoners isnt a prison film. it's a mystery thriller with intensity, and ill leave it at that for sake of spoilers. must watch if your a fan of the genre (it reminded me of zodiac in a lot ways, cept more head-on)

i might start a 'top 10' thread to see people's lists and grab some recommendations that way

Beyond the Black Rainbow [2010]

The style of this movie could be described as 2001: A Space Oddessy meets Eraserhead. I'd mostly suggest this if you're in the mood for experimental Indy film or even something Retro. This is a modern film, but the setting starts in the 1980s and also goes back to the 1960s.

Sounds like a good idea. Could probably have a few top 10 lists actually. Maybe by decade genre or something. Would help sort what you want to watch and whatever. I know a few of you watch a lot of movies so some could do it.

Ok, got that.

Hope your right about that space odyssey vibe lol

Hobo With a Shotgun [2011]

Delivering justice one shell at a time!

Yeah this is quite bloody and kinda f***ed up. Homeless guy gives up his dream of buying a lawnmower and decides to buy a shotgun instead to find back against the deranged crazies in the city.

Yuck, MIB 3, really.....IMO it sucks, big time.

Expendables isn't that great either. I enjoyed those movies more for Nostalgia reasons than quality reasons. If you want Solid action flicks, Dredd( which you have) and the Raid( subtitled) are great choices. If you're in to Subtitled martial art movies then check out Ip Man too. Ip Man for me is the best best Martial arts film since Enter the dragon.
