Biomutant is an open-world action RPG from the some of the minds behind Just Cause 3 and Mad Max. Published by THQ Nordic, the upcoming adventure puts you in control of an adorably badass creature in a lush, wild setting.

What is Biomutant?

Set in a post-apocalyptic universe filled with humanoid animal creatures, Biomutant is an open-world RPG that combines exploration and combat across an ambitious setting.

Biomutant release date
It’s scheduled to launch in 2018 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Biomutant gameplay – How does it play?
Described as a “kung-fu fable” by developer Experiment 101, Biomutant allows you to customise your character with different robotic attachments, mutations and weapons, ranging from samurai swords to full-blown assault rifles. Experimentation is key, with each new bit of loot aiming to enhance the gameplay experience. Character customisation has been compared to the likes of an MMO, offering a staggering number of player options.

Played from a third-person perspective, combat will be a mixture of martial arts, shooting and old-school melee attacks. All of these will be determined by your mutations, giving combat plenty of nuance. Weapons can also be crafted in a similar manner to fit the situation in which you find yourself.

Exploration is a big component of Biomutant, and the way you can travel across the world is surprisingly varied. The land before us can be traversed on foot, mech, air balloon, jet skis and even a UFO. Hopefully, they all handle well and allow for a bit of customisation.

There will be three individual worlds to explore, including an underworld and even a miniature solar system that we hope is filled with different characters and side quests to conquer.

Looks like fun. Kind of rough -- clearly not AAA polish, but they are taking some risks and bringing something new to the table, so cheers for that. I like the cartooney look and the lighthearted tone, (not sure about the "Boing" "Boing" visual effects, though, lol).

Random comment from Resetera: "I played this at PAX, and had an obscenely good time with it. The combat gave me strong Just Cause 2 vibes, and the slightly janky production value just gave it a great B-game quality."

Looks fun, but that guy's "Just Cause 2 vibes" comment leaves me confused.

Well, the devs worked on Just Cause 2 previously, so maybe that's what he's referencing.

Here is a dev interview where they talk about the character creator, weapon system, etc.

Just Cause 2 was some serious fun. I loved the go anywhere, blow up just about anything and the grapple chute was awesome.
I love Just Cause 2 and even Just Cause 3. I just never would have drawn that comparison based on the gameplay videos.

I will buy anything these guys make! I loved Just Cause and MAD Max!

Added some info to the OP.

Kung fu, jet skiis, UFOs, and a miniature solar system? Sign me up.

Overview of the game.

  • Founded by former Avalanche staff (Just Cause) in Summer 2015. About 20 employees.
  • Development started in Fall 2015.
  • The motto of the studio is 'fun in a good way'. The developers don't take themselves too seriously and just hope to deliver a fun product.
  • Stats are divided in six Attributes: Strength, Vitality, Charisma, Intellect, Agility, and Luck.
  • In the full game, you collect weapon parts and mix-and-match to create weapons.
  • Each part has its influence on the weapon's stats, such as Damage, Critical Chance, Reload Speed (for guns), and more.
  • There are a couple of mutation types: Biomutations, Psyonic Mutations
  • The story revolves around a tree in the middle of world that is dying from an oil infection.
  • Around the tree are seven vastly different regions called Biomes.
  • You can choose to save or destroy the world through your decisions throughout the game.
  • There are also a bunch of tribes living the world. Some of them want the Tree to live; other want it to die. You can team up with individual tribes, unite them, do whatever you want.

Here's the dev interview from which that info is taken:

Game has been pushed back to summer 2019 (it was 2018, initially). There were new videos released at Gamescom. They made me question whether I wanted the game or not. I'm feeling a little cooler towards it than I was originally. Not sure why, maybe it's the narrator and the text. Feels a little kiddy or silly.

Here's some gameplay.

Yeah I want to like this game but not too impressed with the gameplay. That narrator is terrible.

Biomutant is a Refreshingly Weird Action-RPG With a Lot of Potential

Excerpts:

In terms of the gameplay, Biomutant feels very much like an action game in the style of something like the Batman: Arkham games, but with added RPG elements to give the player a sense of progression and customization with their character’s abilities.

What I didn’t expect to see from playing Biomutant was how seemingly tongue-in-cheek and over-the-top that the game would be.

Developer Experiment 101 really seems to be embracing the unique aesthetic of Biomutant and the possibilities that its mutated creatures offer. It’s a weird game, but I mean that in the best way possible.

That tongue-in-cheek quality especially comes through in the combat, as players can utilize a range of kung-fu powers to take down their opponents, including a set of powerful Super Wushu abilities that can deal devastating blows to enemies.

Outside of the game’s characters and combat, what really struck out to me as well was the world of Biomutant, which feels refreshingly lively and colorful. While it does take place in a post-apocalyptic setting, Biomutant felt closer to something like Enslaved: Odyssey to the West or Horizon Zero Dawn in how it blends the post-apocalypse with a vibrant setting that feels lived-in and natural. Though I was roaming through dilapidated cities and areas that suggested the collapse of civilization long ago, the lush environments all gave Biomutant the feel that life has begun anew, and made me want to continue diving in further to see the rest of this world and what has become of it.

While I only had a brief window of time to play Biomutant (about 15-20 minutes), what I played so far still felt like a wholly unique experience that has a lot of potential, from its action-packed combat to its (seemingly) extensive RPG mechanics. Though it seems like there are a ton of systems that I had only just begun to scratch the surface of in the demo, Biomutant seems like it has the right amount of character, satisfying combat, and deep exploration to make it feel like one of this year’s potential sleeper hits. Like the mutated creatures that make up the game, Biomutant seems to have found an unusual mixture of genres and gameplay styles that somehow has managed to work in its favor.

Here's some gameplay from Pax West 2019.

As you can see, the combat is varied and unusual. Judging by this clip, the game is very combat-oriented. There is some fairy tale type narration to provide a bit of a story, but it's really not a character or story-driven game, by the looks of it. That would fit with the developer history (they did Just Cause). The environments are pretty unique at times -- check out the intestine section about 40% into the video.

I prefer more story, character interaction, and exploration, less of a constant focus on combat. But I applaud them for their originality.

I hope it works out, I like the art style. Maybe they just started showing it too early
