Yes you can. I've started brand new games and played side-by-side with people welding the scythe. That's more than proof enough you'll ever need.

I have been scouring the web.....and I am looking for the best way for me to play this game as a total complete noob. I am still not far in the game...like never even seen a boss yet, and I just die die and die. Anyone have any advice? Maybe the game is just not for me.

Hey you should post a small video clip. So we can better critique your combat style. But just to throw out a few pointers:

  1. From Software is a troll. You won't get to level up until you at least meet a one boss and die miserably. This throws even Dark Souls veterans for a loop the first time. So if needed, just run past the hordes of enemies and make finding a boss a priority. Dodge roll helps avoid damage too.
  2. Bait the enemies' attacks. Wait for them to strike first and miss then follow up with an attack if your own. It pays to wait for them to make the first move.
  3. Don't YOLO.
  4. Again. Run and retreat if you feel at risk. Not every enemy is a priority. Meet a boss first to acquire insight before worrying about the mundanes. You can actually just go marathon-runner on them and skip past entire mobs with little consequence.
  5. Instead of using ladders, roll off the side of these higher places to get down quickly and minimize damage. This is good for if you are trying to just skip past enemies and want to avoid giving them a chance to catch up.
  6. Bullets can parry every enemy in the early stages of the game if timed right. So practice finding that timing with each enemy, especially those big guys. Fire right as their attack is "committed." It is when they are most venerable. Killing those snipers will give you extra bullets if you need more. Also pressing "up arrow" will give you five bullets at the cost of some HP.

I will try all that this afternoon. I will try to get a video recorded too.

Decided to back and finish this off and I saw the DLC on sale for half price on PSN so I picked that up as well.

I wish this game had a mode for wussies like me. I love the art style and atmosphere. But this game's death penalties are just too punishing for me. A 4K mode would get me to try again. Make it happen Sony.

A 4K mode won't make it kill you less. I just plain suck at this game, but I like the game. Ugh.

Think I only played until the second boss. Game was fun and I really want to get back to it at some point, but like the Dark Souls games I have this odd feeling while playing the game. It's not that I have found them overly difficult or mind dying, it's the tension I guess playing the game knowing you're about to get f***ed. Which is odd because usually tension in horror games/movies is awesome for me but playing a game it's like why am I playing this when I could be jumping on Goomba heads.

Just over level your character if your having trouble. Replay the same area and build points to spend on your character while also getting used to the combat. you can also summon other players to help. These games tend to reward patience.

The only real penalty is time. Losing your souls is not as big of a deal as you think.

goddamnit. My saved game is corrupted. Right back to the start for me. Oh well... let the punishmetn begin again.

I had a hard time running past enemies. In most games you can't move on until every enemy is killed. That's a gaming mechanic so ingrained within me. I need to destroy everything that moves. But in this game doing that can get you killed real quick. And death means losing stuff you need for upgrades which would really frustrate me.

Don't get me wrong Blooborne is a great game its just a little too punishing for me. I would love it if these developers made a Castlevania game.

This pretty much is Castlevania!

Salt and Sanctuary?

Doing a second playthrough and the DLC with a new character. Forgot how awesome the atmosphere is in this game.

I think the most important thing is knowing when to return to the Hunters Dream. I always unlock the shortcut in an area then go back and spend my blood echoes. That way it's a short trip usually to the area boss.

I just restarted and didn't import my save. I only played up until the fifth boss back when this released. And its been so long that I forgot how to play so starting over is a good thing. I think this game is like two years old and yet it still looks great.
