Read any good books lately?

Still haven't started the second one of Southern Reach. Do you think its worth it as a trilogy?
I'm not sure I'm the best person to ask really. I enjoy most movies, books, etc I read so I rarely give harsh reviews on anything. Both books definitely added more to the story. The second is focused more on a new character and around the actual Southern Reach agency and trying to figure out what is going on. The third book changes perspective each chapter and provides more backstory on the area prior to the event and obviously wrapping up the story. I thought the third was better than the second just because I liked the changing narrative and backstory.

Should I get a Kindle? Think most of my books will be, well books, but I went through Amazon and found a bunch of stuff I would read that are like $3 on Kindle. Plus since having Prime since end of last year there have been a few free books I want to read. Kindles are on sale right now $20 off so thinking about grabbing a Paperwhite.

Use the kindle app. I have some apple stuff and android stuff and having the kindle app on them all is awesome. No matter what I have with me my books are on them.

Reason I initially shied away from Kindle was I'm not a fan of reading on a computer screen. But figured since Kindle is more book like it may be worth it.

I love my kindle paperwhite. A little pricey, but once I got one I never went back to paper books. I like the Paperwhite because it just does black and white so it looks just like paper and you can even read in a dark room just fine.

If you don't want to splurge on a Paperwhite, a 7 or 8 inch Fire is nice too. I actually have an 8 inch fire as well as my Paperwhite. (both still combined are way cheaper than some crappy Apple product).

Only thing to watch for on the Fire is not all apps work on it. Most of the major stuff is on the Amazon store but every now and then you'll find something that doesn't (Marvel Unlimited is one because Amazon has their own crappy competitor).

I bought a Kindle. Went back to paperback after 2 books. Just wasn't the same. I also love that I can grab my book and know the battery isn't low.

I buy on Amazon often and it tells me I can read the kindle version while my paperback ships but I haven't used that feature. What would be cool is if I knew every paperback I bought came with the kindle version then it would be easier to read at the gym on the treadmill. I could be reading my paperback, be on page 50, then go to gym, go to page 50 in the kindle to continue where I left off. It's hard to keep bigger books open on the tiny tray on the treadmill.

Well I went yolo and bought a Paperwhite. Actually went with a bundle that came with a leather case power adapter. I have my cell phone power adapter but it's nearly always plugged in in a spot that isn't the easiest to remove, and has USB-C so not like I could just plug the Kindle into that cable. Also wasn't initially going to use a case but I'm usually pretty OCD so figured it would come in handy if I was traveling with the Kindle.

Nice. Actually the case is a good idea. I'm on my 2nd paperwhite only because I set my first one on my dresser and something landed on the screen and put a big spot on it.

The battery live on them is usually great so it doesn't need charged much anyway.

Charging my "standard" Kindle now at work since that bastard Viktor had to remind me I have the damn thing. I can't connect to my work internet though because there is a landing page to log in, which loads in the "experimental browser", but the page is blank even though it is loaded. Ugh I hate technology.

Depends how nice your IT staff is. If it was me I'd allow the device through the filter. Have had to do it for my schools for things like Google Home or Apple TV since our filter requires user authentication either via an installed program or web portal.

That would be nice. But I work for Hilton Corporation, and the landing page is a worldwide mandate for the hotels and guests :). And IT support? Don't even get me started with Hilton support. I should strangle you right now for bringing up that useless staff of thousands.

You'd be amazed at how a well timed, hot delivered pizza to the right IT guys will solve your technological problems in a hurry.

Got my Paperwhite but unfortunately there is a dead pixel or something, pretty much dead center. Can only really notice it when brightness is over about half or so. Might get a different one but we'll see after using it a bit.

That sucks. You get it from Amazon? They are really good with returns in my experience. I bought an LCD monitor not long ago and it was damaged. They 2 day shipped me a new one no questions asked (I had to send the old one back obviously but they let me do that after).

Yea it's Amazon. I found a post on Reddit from someone with a dead pixel and it is way worse than mine, so not even sure it's a pixel and might just be something under the screen. There is also a smudge or scrape on the screen top left. Already tried to clean it and not coming off. My history of exchanges is 50/50 if the new item is actually in good condition so we'll see.

I'm sort of at the point of silly OCD and thinking it's not worth exchanging, versus this is a multi-billion dollar company that can f*** itself with shoddy material.

Edit: screw it started an exchange.

Anyone else read military sci fi stuff?

I’m just finishing this:

Sekret Machines Book 1: Chasing Shadows

Amazon product

Tom DeLonge from Blink-182 is one of the authors, and apparently he’s super into UFOs. So he managed to get interviews with tons of military people (and many others), and wrote this fictional book, but according to him a large part of what’s in the book actually happened. Just not in exactly the way it’s described in the book, apparently. He took info from all the interviews, scattered the details into the basic story of the book, and came up with characters.

So apparently it’s half real (according to him), and half fiction. Honestly it’s fascinating stuff, and not at all what you would think. And according to him this is going to be a huge thing with eventual movies, more books, and documentaries.

Highly recommended!

I've actually purchased quite a few sci-fi books lately. Got an email from Goodreads about deals on Amazon so signed up for that. Found some deals to grab a few 3-book series for under $6 so not bad. Tori Harris, Jay Allan, and Richard Phillips are authors I've purchased from so far. Found a couple other series to keep an eye on but starting to get into Steam backlog territory so need to read some stuff first before buying more.

Any recommendations for historical books? Fiction or non-fiction is ok and any subject but most interested in WW1 and 2 stuff. There was a sale on the second book in this series by James Jones I grabbed, which seems more fiction if anything. Also grabbed The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914 by Christopher Clark, something non-fiction.

This isn't really a story but a very old guidline on warfare. It's interesting to flip through and usually doesn't cost much.

What is interesting to me is the strategic thought put into it and how objective it is.

It works great as a guide to dating too!

I am a little over 3 quarters into NOSA42 by Joe Hill (son of Stephen King) this book FEELS like something King would have written and even has homages to his dad's works like they mention Shawshank Prison, Derry Maine, and Pennywise. I look forward to reading future books of Hill's.

Currently reading Beware the Past by Joy Ellis. She has a boat load of highly rated thriller/detective books. One of her standalone books so something in that genre I can ready quick without having a long series to get into. Also picked up Michio Kaku's new book so I can get learned.

I didn't realize AMC was doing a show of Dan Simmons' The Terror. Have the book but haven't read it yet. It's like 900 pages so not going to get through it before the show starts.

Didn't read many books all summer but have been thinking about reading something again. Amazon has a bunch of free short stories periodically and if you're a Prime member you can check them out. They have some now for Halloween so I was looking to read that. Also, because tis the season as well as the most recent Ghost Adventures episode regarding Astoria Oregon and the fact that one of HP Lovecraft's stories was based on that town, I wanted to pick up his collection. You can get it on Kindle for $1 or less although there are multiple versions of. Not sure what the exact differences are but for that price sounds like a steal.

I just finished the first book of Scalzi's new series. I really like it so far.

Also for anyone old enough to remember those old Battletech books (now called Mechwarrior), Amazon is putting a lot of the old ones out on Kindle now.

His name is familiar but don't remember if I've purchased anything or just wish list.

Anyone read anything good recently? Aside from first half of last year I didn't really read much outside of a few shorter books this fall. Want to start reading again and decided to finally get to Artemis since I've had that since it released. A couple chapters in so far and enjoying it. Didn't read The Martian so nothing to compare to.

I also got an email from Amazon for 3 months of Kindle Unlimited for .99. I was looking into what it includes and honestly disappointed. They have a lot stuff but nothing from big publishers outside of the really big hits like LOTR, Harry Potter, etc. Most of the stuff on my wishlist is nowhere to be found. Still for .99 I think I can find enough stuff to read but I don't see it being worth it beyond that.
