Read any good books lately?

Anyone read anything good recently? Aside from first half of last year I didn't really read much outside of a few shorter books this fall. Want to start reading again and decided to finally get to Artemis since I've had that since it released. A couple chapters in so far and enjoying it. Didn't read The Martian so nothing to compare to.

I also got an email from Amazon for 3 months of Kindle Unlimited for .99. I was looking into what it includes and honestly disappointed. They have a lot stuff but nothing from big publishers outside of the really big hits like LOTR, Harry Potter, etc. Most of the stuff on my wishlist is nowhere to be found. Still for .99 I think I can find enough stuff to read but I don't see it being worth it beyond that.

Salvation by Peter F Hamilton. I haven’t read a good book by him in a long time but his last one just knocked my socks off. It’s a sci -fi detective story about a group of six people on their way to a an alien first contact situation, told from the perspective of the six people over different chapters. It’s got an epic twist for the end. Loved every minute.

So far this year I've read Artemis by Andy Weir, Zodiac by Neal Stephenson, and the Binti trilogy by Nnedi Okorakor. That trilogy was really only like one book as they all come in around 460 pages total. Goodreads had a deal for 3 months of Kindle Unlimited for .99c so figured I'd grab that and read through a few books including the The Hobbit and LOTR, although not sure I'd read them all back to back. Otherwise I have yet to get into fantasy stuff so that is definitely a genre I want to start reading some more. I see some mention of Brandon Sanderson so I'll check out his stuff.

I switched gears a bit and went history with my latest book: SPRQ by Mary Beard. All about the Roman Empire. Just like video games, my book backlog just keeps growing. There's so much good sci fi out there. Even reading at least a little each night it is hard to keep up.

Got Clive Barker's BOOKS OF BLOOD volume 1 on Audible.

This includes The Midnight Meat Train which was adapted to film.

Also, Proposed Roads to Freedom by Bertrand Russell (abridged). Having a hard time following this one because while it brings up Capitalism and Socialism, it tosses in a 3rd concept of Syndicalism I'm not quite familiar with. It seems to be about fragmenting industry into self governing guilds to break up economy power or have them be checks against eachother. Kind of like running the nation under Super Unions.

Finished The War on Normal People by Andrew Yang. Basically brings discussion to the decline of the middle class and raises concern over the coming wave of automation and AI decimating jobs.

Yea with Kindle I have a problem just like Steam sales. Oh here's a book for a buck or two better grab it. Maybe I'll catch up in about 10 years like my games.

I'm a few chapters into The Hobbit and really enjoying it. I watched the LOTR movies before the books (which I haven't read yet but will at some point) but I wanted to read The Hobbit prior to watching the movies.

Couple chapters left in The Hobbit. Really good book. I know the movies didn't review as well as the LOTR ones but still curious now to see how it goes. I'll wait on watching them for a bit though.

Anyone try the app Libby?
I haven't but see it's part of OverDrive which I'm familiar with. I really should use the library more for reading books. It's tempting to buy Kindle books when they're like $3 or less, but just like games I have a giant backlog I'll probably never finish.

Finished reading Blake Crouch's Dark Matter. Really good read. Never read his Wayward Pines books although I watched the first season of the show and wasn't a fan. He has a new one out recently so probably will just read that sometime and ignore Wayward Pines for now.

Currently reading The Terror by Dan Simmons. Have had it for a while and it's a genre I haven't read much of lately so figured I'd give it a go. Only a handful of chapters in so far but enjoying it.

Still reading The Terror. Damn book is the longest one I've read so far at around 750 pages. I only read like 20 pages a day, which works great with this book since that is about what a regular chapter length is. Just means I'm reading it forever. Anyways, I'm closing in on 500 pages and really enjoying it. Would like to find more historical books with a fictional twist on it.

Currently reading Dune and about 3/4 of the way through. Really good so far.

Denis Villeneuve ( Blade Runner 2049) is working on a film adaption. I'm really looking forward to seeing his version. I really hope this does well.

I read DUNE once and I saw the David Lynch movie a long time ago. I remember the book being very long but worth it.

Yea definitely going to be my longest book so far. I read the Terror last year and that was about 750. Dune is around 850 although I think that last 50 or so is a glossary for all the Dune specific words, names, etc. Never saw the old movie so my only Dune knowledge comes from the old PC game Dune 2000 lol.

Just started on the Wheel of Time. Can’t believe I’ve overlooked it for so long. Already on book 2 and really enjoying it so far.

If there was a "what books have you read recently" thread, I'd post in there, so here goes:

Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir (The Martian)

Outstanding. Loved every moment of it. Lots of similarities to The Martian, but quite a bit to set it apart and perhaps make it into an even better story.
