Jordan Peele’s ‘Candyman’ Confirmed and Set for 2020 Release!
This past September, Bloody Disgusting exclusively broke the news that Jordan Peele‘s Monkeypaw Productions would be producing a remake to the Bernard Rose-directed Candyman, a chilling urban horror film adapted from Clive Barker‘s “Books of Blood” short story “The Forbidden”. This has been confirmed this afternoon with news that it is being billed as a “spiritual sequel” that returns to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.
“Urban” had a dual meaning in that the original adaptation was moved from England to the now demolished Cabrini–Green public housing development in Chicago, while the antagonist is an urban legend in himself, the Candyman (played by Tony Todd), an artist and son of a slave who had his hand severed and was then murdered (with bees, of course) by his lover’s father. Released in 1992, the film spawned two sequels, the latter being direct-to-video.

I'm curious to see to see how this goes, but how do you recast Candyman or who can step in and follow what Tony Todd did with the role as well as dealing with bees?

I would also like to see a modern take on Nightbreed.

I’d much prefer to see a Nightbreed movie rather than this.

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. He played Adebesi in Oz on HBO. Or god actor, Michael K Williams.

One of the first horror movies I saw. Definitely interested to see what he does with it.

I'm curious about this 'gentrification' angle as the Chicago urban area grows or changes. Will there be a subtle commentary on class as wealthier people redevelop the area or some wind up killed? I think even in the original they showed that some pricey apartments were renovated Projects housing.

As a kid, I was a big fan of Candyman. Tony Todd's performance is unforgettable imo. That said, I welcome horror remakes for the most part and look forward to Peele's version, who already seems to be making his own version of Candyman, which is how remakes should be handled imo. It'll be interesting to see if Tony Todd returns or not. If you look at his resume, the man is clearly still working.

It's been a long time since I've seen Candyman. I enjoyed it from what I remember. I wonder if it will feel dated if I watch it again? Time to see if it's on Netflix or Hulu.

My buddy’s dad was roommates in college with the guy who played Candyman.

Apparently they robbed a pet store together.

I've seen a number of very positive reviews from horror fans about this, I'm thinking I may actually go check this out in the theater this weekend as it's feeling very autumny here at the moment. Haven't been to a theater since either the end of 2019 or very beginning of 2020, crazy!
