Companies And People being Terrible - Job Layoffs, Down Playing Employees

And people wonder how the witch trials could've got so far... eventhough it's prob true about ign and those two guys, this hanging out people for whatever in social media can turn horrifyingly wrong.

Who would've thought this would've been the most lighthearted story to pop up this week...

So much rot in the games industry.

A thread (this is the first one of many twitter posts), which also proves there is some media bias out there.

He stayed tgere for 4 years, how bad could the "emotional horror" really be.

Never understood why people stay so long in these supposedly hostile workplaces.

It's never that simple. I've suffered this kind of abuse in a previous job where I worked for 11 years. I did leave eventually but most people (myself included) will usually make some effort to fight it while they do remain in the job.

Anytime I've been in a bad experience, I stick it out and hope that the bad people eventually get flushed out.

I had a boss who was horribly under-qualified (basically a friend of a higher up) who gets magically promoted from the lowest rung to everyone's boss. The guy is completely in over his head but instead of trying to learn is just abusive to people. Everyone hated this guy. Eventually he stepped on the wrong toes and got himself fired, but it took a good 6 months. I'm glad I stuck it out. It doesn't always happen, but sometimes people get what's coming to them.

I know in my field this kind of thing is just super common, and you don't want to be one of those people who has 4 different jobs in 2 years, because you will have trouble getting hired. People will either think you're difficult or just a ladder climber who has no plans on staying.

I couldn't do that. Life is too short for that s***.

Some people are not confrontational and simply don't know how to handle abusive situations. And most times the way they do handle such situations is to put their head down, be silent and hope they are not noticed. All the while the incident eats away at them slowly destroying any sense of confidence and self worth.

For some people who will speak out and not take such abuse they say "I can't understand how or why someone else wouldn't speak out". I really wish those types of people would try and understand that we are all "different". And your way may not be the way for others. We're all human but we all process and handle situations differently. Please be respectful of others feelings even if you don't understand them.

The issue is, many companies have "link". You can quit but risk never to have a similar job. I was bullied in my first job. Everyone knew but kept mom. Eventually, one manager took pity on me & found out what happened. Turned out it was a miscommunication between my Japanese boss & my bully. He misread my boss (who had a problem communicating in English) said & thought I refused to take advice from him (the bully) as he wasn't a senior engineer or higher. For that misunderstanding, I was bullied for 3 months straight.

Eventually, the one who bullied me left to pursue other interests. I couldn't leave or even react as it was my first job, even apologized for things I never did. I knew it would look bad if I look for other jobs. Do You think any employee will buy the argument I was bullied? Also, my dad would probably threw me out of the house for shaming him.

I am lucky to be now working in a place where everyone is nice. It was decent pay & I have free social time. But something, bad experience makes you appreciated good things more & not take things for granted.

From 1:38:25 onward

  • Marty thought siding with Activision was a horrible idea
  • They contemplated getting back with Microsoft but MS demanded that they have ownership of Destiny as a whole (like Halo)
  • It was far worse then Bungie had feared it would be. He said that Bungie went into business with Activision for the sole reason that they would allow Bungie to keep ownership of Destiny as a franchise
  • Despite what Bungie employees say, Activision messed with a lot of what Bungie was trying to do. Marty also brought up the point that the safeguard in place to prevent Activision from messing with Bungie was 7 studio heads (himself included) who would deliberate on ideas
  • Not all the studio heads felt that Bungie should remain completely autonomous and sided with Activision on some of their decisions. Many of those people still work at Bungie
  • The first red flag that Bungie notices was that at a dinner before the contract was signed, Activision higher ups mocked Marty’s statement that you should “respect the goose”
  • If you treat the goose with respect, it’ll make golden eggs.
  • one of their financial advisers made a joke about how there’s nothing better than Foie Gras
  • Foie gras is a french specialty, it’s liver from ducks or geese. The way they make it is pretty horrible though, they basically overfeed the animals by stuffing food down their throat with a stick so their liver gets really fatty

  • It's essentially saying "who gives a s*** about being nice to the goose for its golden eggs when you can force-feed it, bloat it, and have many feast on its fattened-up liver".
The guy was essentially admitting to how they treat their development studios, around the same time they were "eviscerating Infinity Ward". Red flags galore.

  • This threw Marty off and he says that he wishes they scrapped the idea then and there
  • He dryly jokes that the massive legal battle he and Bungie had was partly due to Activision
  • He jokes that hindsight is 20/20 and that they never should have partnered with Activision

Why would MS even want them back, Destiny IP or not.

But I thought the relationship with Bungie was DOA.

Yeah sounds like Microsoft messed up when owning them and then blew an opportunity to get a pretty big exclusive that they would have needed.

Its a shame because the two of them worked best with each other

Would have been cool if MS had made Bungie into two teams. A Halo team and a Destiny team back when Bungie wanted to make Destiny.

Its possible there is nothing that could be done and that Halo became so big that Bungie was always going to want out but if giving them freedom would have meant them not getting to that point and keeping their best studio they should have done so.

Destiny itself is almost too big for Bungie to manage. Bungie has struggled to keep up both with an AAA backer like Activision and on their own. They are planning on decommissioning old content simply because they can't manage it all anymore. Old planets like Titan, Nessus and Mercury are just getting removed (probably to come back at some point).

Everyone loves to make Activision the bad guy in all this, but Bungie has broken away for some time now and Destiny content has not gotten much better.

You'd think by now if Activision was such a dark cloud over everything that we'd see noticeable improvement. Destiny 2 is still a very scaled down, seasonal microtransaction seller. Their new ideas to "fix" the game have been sunsetting our existing gear and making us go out and get the exact same guns with the exact same perks on it, which isn't exactly a rewarding gameplay loop.

Of course, the fall DLC will be important as it always is. A good fall DLC sets the tone for the game in the future months.

Activision is business, prob 99% non gaming a******s at the top.

They have made great games though, so as long as there's quality and not microtransactions galore I'm okay with it.
