Cyberpunk 2077 E3 2019 Demo Ran at 1080p Ultra Settings with RTX On; Visuals and Ray Tracing to Improve Further

Cyberpunk 2077 was, once again, the highlight of the yearly Electronic Entertainment Expo. Not only the game got the release date announcement (April 16th, 2020, in case you haven’t already circled your calendars), they also revealed Keanu Reeves to be a character in the game (Johnny Silverhand from Cyberpunk lore) with the popular actor himself walking on the stage of Microsoft’s briefing to confirm his involvement and his excitement for being part of the project.

Most importantly, though, the developers at CD Projekt RED brought over a brand new demo showcased behind closed doors to the press, including our team. That easily won us over (as well as pretty much any other colleague, judging from the impressions that have been posted) on every level and Cyberpunk 2077 went on to secure for itself two of our E3 2019 awards: Best Game and Best Tech Showcase.

On the latter point, NVIDIA confirmed the partnership with CD Projekt RED to add real-time ray tracing to Cyberpunk 2077 on PC. We inquired with CDPR’s Alvin Liu about the subject and he had some interesting things to say on the subject.

Ray Tracing was on [in the demo]. We were showing off Ray Traced Emissives, Sky Light, and Ambient Occlusion. However, I’ve seen super impressive screenshots internally about raytracing (they get sent out in a digest e-mail), so we’re clearly still working on it as they looked more impressive than what I remember seeing in the demo. Especially at night and with neon reflections. NVIDIA also has representatives and work with our studio to continue to improve and utilize this technology, similar to Witcher 3 and Hairworks.

CD Projekt RED also revealed the PC that they were using to run the demo at E3 2019 and it was quite the beast. We followed up with Alvin Liu to find out the resolution and settings that were in use. Here’s his reply:

The game was running on Ultra, but we are continuing to improve our visuals.
The game demo was running at 1080p, but our trailers and publically released assets are at 4K. The UI is designed mostly at 4K (eventually it will entirely be at 4K native), but we have the technology to swap assets and do intelligent scaling to handle 1080p, widescreen, 720p, 1440p, and so on. We can also design specific UI at 1080p and other resolutions, on a need by need basis, such as on a screen or graphics with heavy icons that might look bad otherwise.

In short, the game ran at 1080p@Ultra settings with an NVIDIA RTX graphics card. However, the developer clearly told us the demo was ‘barely optimized’, so there’s no need to fret about that with almost a full year of development left. In fact, the overall visuals and ray tracing in particular are supposed to get even better than the already impressive stuff we saw in the demo.

This is SOOO TRUE! Everyone is so focused on where they came from that they don't want to focus on where they are going which doesn't help anyone because you can't move forward when you are anchored to the past. Too many people these days want to be seen by their ethnicity or other differences before being seen as the individual they are.

Yeah, it's a very poisonous ideology from a psychological, spiritual, political, and cultural point of view. Psychologically, the constant search for evidence of victimization only leaves people powerless and resentful. Spiritually, you can't move forward if you're attached to your sense of self-righteousness or feeling hatred toward groups of people. Politically, similar ideologies based on group/collectivist identity (rather than individualism) led to the slaughter of tens of millions of people in the 20th century. Culturally, it's just poison. It's not all that different than what you see in some fundamentalist religions. The same narrow-mindedness, dogmatism, black/white thinking, condemnatory attitudes, group think, strong pressures to conform, inability to tolerate dissent, etc...

That's not to say people don't suffer injustices based on belonging to a specific minority group but not everything that doesn't go our way falls into that category. When I hear people say "why aren't there more people who look like me on tv" and they are from let's say a latin country, I just want to ask them how many white people are on shows made in the country they came from?

I don't mind people fighting actual racism, sexism, and whatnot, because those things do exist of course, but identity politics produces what it supposedly resists. It causes people to see others primarily in terms of their gender, sexual orientation, race, or whatnot (things that are basically accidents of nature), rather than who they are as individuals. It's basically the opposite of MLK's dream. It produces people who see others (and themselves) primarily in terms of the color of their skin (or some other immutable biological characteristic), rather than on the content of their character. In other words, it produces racism, sexism, etc.

Like it or not the US is still nearly 65% white and the vast majority are heterosexual so the majority of things we see will involve straight white people, it's nice when other ethnicities and gay people are included but we can't expect equal representation on screen, proportional is all we really should be asking for IMO, anything else is just a bonus. It also doesn't mean that the people who are in the majority are automatically some evil overlords trying to keep us down but sadly that's the prevailing mentality among young people these days it would seem, funny enough white kids think that way as much or more than any minority group does.

Yeah, that's another thing that's striking about it -- the fact that it's young white college kids who are the main champions of this ideology. I have the strong suspicion that, most of the time, the alleged victims (e.g., black people, let's say) weren't offended in the first place. In a way, it's condescending and patronizing. But the white kids get off on being offended. I guess self-righteous indignation must be a real dopamine hit.

Sorry, I know that's off topic. Just felt like talking about it a bit.

She is such a con artist, it seems like more and more people are finally seeing her for what she is, thankfully her company is pretty much broke now.

Yeah. The fact that she's broke helps to explain why she was prodding CDPR for a consultancy gig. "Help me! I'm sinking!" It's kind of ironic. She has become her own trope. Damsel in distress!

The video has been available youtube, since June 9th. For some reason, CDPR has it unlisted. You can access it on the Steam page though.

The more I see of this game the less interested I get, the lighting looks really flat, you would think being a "cyberpunk" game the neon lights would really pop but they don't at all.

No 3rd person cutscenes now, game will be played entirely in first person view. Why the customization then?

It makes no sense, and I still don't buy the first person is more immersive line either. We've all been playing FPS games for a long time and I've never found them more immersive, I do like the option to aim during a gun fight in first person but exploration and melee combat are always better in 3rd person IMO.

I don't know. I can't imagine Dying Light being immersive in 3rd person more so than what it was designed for. Cyberpunk being first person only doesn't bother me a bit, but if they want to add a 3rd person option I am all for it.

The second quote is key IMO : That said, players will still be able to see their characters in the inventory screen, during driving sequences, in mirrors and, very occasionally, in some of the cut-scenes .

I read that as you will see your character in some cut scenes just not very many. I'm good as long as I see my character occasionally.

A buddy of mine is wishing some people get angry enough and cancel their pre-orders of the collectors edition so he can swoop in and grab one as he missed the initial pre order window for it.

To me the sense of danger or just of being there is never made better in first person, it's the way they set up everything around you that does that IMO. If they create a really good world with characters and a story that make you feel like you are there that's what gets me, limiting my viewpoint does nothing for that.

I went third person a lot in vtm:b to avoid being face to face with some of the freakier creatures always rushing me.

No chickening out this time I guess.

Johnny Silverhand, Keanu Reeves' character in Cyberpunk 2077, shows up a lot more than was originally planned thanks to the John Wick actor. Johnny actually lives inside protagonist V's head, on a chip, so he can turn up anywhere, but it turns out that Reeves pushed for him to have a larger role.

At Lucca Comics and Games festival, Italian voice actor Luca Ward told journalist Gian Luca Rocco that his recording time had been doubled thanks to his Canadian counterpart. Reeves was apparently enjoying himself so much he talked CD Projekt Red into giving the virtual rock star a bigger presence.

Did anyone get this email from Best Buy?

I got my collectors edition through Amazon. If they pull some delayed/canceled crap, I'm gonna extraordinarily pissed. I've had them mess up my Fire Emblem order and God of War orders. Its one of the reasons I'm trying to transition away from Amazon when it comes to video games. Prime and Amazon in general isn't as reliable as it used to be.

So my most anticipated game of this year slips to September.:(

I litterally saw this on twitter at work and it made my heart sink. But I guess the bright side, they have 5 more months to make a masterpiece. Still not happy about it though.

I am not upset or bothered by this delay one bit. CDPR knows best so I defer to their judgment. Sure, I’d rather have the game sooner but this delay gives me time with other games from last year that I haven’t been able to play yet and those coming out in the near future.

I hope this relieves or lessens any crunch work on the development team. I remember reading a Kotaku article a while back about how the CDPR studio head said something to the effect of “Crunch is not mandatory and can be refused”. But we all know that if asked to work longer and refuse it’ll have some sort of impact on that developer either in outright negative behavior or some other punitive action like some sort of effect on a bonus or other monetary consideration. Crunch is probably unavoidable for a project of this scale I just hope people are treated fairly and with dignity.
