Another little gripe about the story. Not a big deal, just something that came off cliche to me. I'm probably a third or maybe halfway through the main story (hard to know), so it'll be a spoiler for those of you who are still early in the game.

I'm talking about the scene where one-handed Boozer beats Deacon's ass, in order to get him to open up about something he doesn't want to talk about. Deacon had gotten his hopes up that Sarah might be alive, but he found out from O'Brien that she is is likely dead. So instead of just accepting that maybe this isn't the time to press him, Boozer (according to the rules of this sort of scene) has to beat the crap out of him, in order to get him to be vulnerable enough to say what happened. Then Deacon chuckles and they're best buds. It seemed cliche, like something I'd seen dozens of times on TV or in movies. I did get a little verklempt, which is probably why writers keep doing this (predictable payoff), but it felt cheap/sentimental, rather than genuine, because I was aware of how cliche it was.

Anyhow, not a big deal, but if you're lactose intolerant, just know that the story does contain some cheese.

Are you using a remote explosive there?

I still haven't taken on my first horde.

It's a bomb that makes noise to attract them and then goes off after a few seconds, generally speaking that strategy hasn't worked for any horde but that one, usually after the first bomb like that they see me and come after me, good news is if you get far enough ahead some of the horde will give up and head back to their resting spot.

I see. I've used the Attractor + molotovs but not that one yet -- it sounds like the proximity bomb. I may have one in my inventory, I'm not sure. I heard that you get a remote explosive later in the game, which is what R on the D-pad is for.

Question - do you think it's better to carry a heavy machine gun or the upgraded crossbow as the distance weapon? I picked up a heavy machine gun and have been using it for a while now. I got access to an upgraded version of the crossbow (Hunter Bow, I think it's called?), but I don't want to select it, because I think I'll lose access to the machine gun if I do (weapons that are just picked up, rather than unlocked, seem to disappear from my choices later). Also, are the sniper rifles worthwhile, or do you prefer the upgraded crossbow?

I have started to put my Nero points into Focus. I made the mistake early on of putting most of my points into Health, which is a habit of mine in most RPGs I play. That isn't a very good strategy here, and it'll really backfire once I face hoards. I'll need plenty of points in Stamina and Focus.

I always focused my NERO points into stamina and focus until later in the game started dumping into health. As for what to use between crossbow or LMG, it really depends on what you're planning on fighting. I use the crossbow when going into marauder camps, but LMGs when fighting hordes. I love using the residue bolts and making bandits turn on one another.

I've pretty much stuck with the crossbow the entire time, you get to make different kinds of arrows as time goes on so it's versatile and silent.

Aw, I really like the story in this game. Just got

Boomer a puppy.

Goty.

I am about half way though, and it's pretty good. But the fetch quests are getting old. I assume that changes?

You mean the bounties? No, I think they continue. At least they give you a little brief background story with each. But if you get tired of them, you can just stop. They're optional.

I heard that if you turn the aim sensitivity down to 2 or 3, it helps with the aiming. I'm going to try that.

I am only doing main missions, which has fetching. But based on your reply, there isn't too many. Thanks!

To balance out my earlier praise of the story... There certainly are times when the story or character behavior doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

The behavior of Iron Mike, for instance. He's portrayed as an effective, compassionate, and tough-as-nails leader, yet he is incredibly, bizarrely naive about human nature. Those two traits don't really go together. Or the scene where Iron Mike's people and the Rippers all have their guns pointed at each other and no one gets hurt. That's another one of those TV/movie things that just comes off fake to me.

I could name some more examples, but you get the idea.

I'll add to the list of technical issues. There are moments where one piece of audio will contradict another (e.g., telling someone over the radio "You're breaking up" as a way to get out of talking to them, then immediately transitioning to a different conversation with the same person). Deacon sometimes will shout while trying to sneak into a crowded camp. Keep your voice down, dummy, lol.

I'm running into more framerate drops now, too. That seems to happen in a lot of open-world RPGs, which I think is because the files get bigger and the game has more to keep track of. It's mildly distracting. It happens on the bike. The framerate slows down for a few seconds, then it clears up.

Playing a lot of this lately...

Some of the dialog between Deacon and Sarah is irritating. It's supposed to be playful banter, but some of it grates on my nerves. Aside from the fact that it's a bad boy + nice scientist girl tale, the witty banter between them is just ... urgh.

I also find it strange that, even though I start moving as soon as the game allows, I'm still stuck walking 20 feet behind her. I'm supposed to be her badass lover, and I'm walking 20 feet behind her like some doofus.

I'm at the point in the story where

You go south to the army camp and get locked out of the north. I read that there are two times you get locked out. This is the first.

Question - should I have sought out hordes in that earlier part of the game? I just avoided them. I was waiting for the story to confront me with a horde, but it hasn't happened yet. I ran into a horde once, accidentally, and I just hightailed it out of there, because I wasn't prepared. But I'm wondering now whether I should've been actively seeking them out and taking them on. The game seems to leave that to the player....?

There are only 3 hordes involved in the narrative of the game, all of which come near the end. After the game is over, you'll have full reign to go after the rest, don't worry, you won't be gated off from any of them. I definitely went after a few before heading south in an effort to get my trust with the camps there high enough that I could unlock the gear I wanted (I love that USS 5.56) so I took down a couple hordes for that, but at a certain point the game will actually put all the remaining horde locations on your map.

Hah, I love those first two. Before, after....

Thanks for the input, HorTyS, that's helpful.

I'm getting more framerate slowdown, now that I'm in the southern section. It's quite noticeable and frequent. Even for someone like me, it's a little bothersome.

I am enjoying the game, but I do have a complaint about the story.

After Deacon finds Sarah alive in the army camp, her response is "I can't go with you" and to keep him at arm's-length. Now here's Deacon, who has gone through hell for 2 years trying to track her down, exposed himself to terrible risk a thousand times over, and her response is basically a cold shoulder and "here's a honey-do list." And Deacon just submits. This annoys me. Deacon used to be an independent badass, and now he's a self-sacrificing blue pill simp. I would have rather he said, "f*** that, run your own errands, I'm going to get a dog and hang out with Boozer. See ya."

I'm still in the middle of it, though, so we'll see how it turns out.

Is it just me or does anyone else get a jarring slow when getting hit with a red laser from a sniper followed by a continue dialog and then shot off your bike. Every time.

Yeah I experienced more slow down out on the open road after I got a good way through the story for some reason, it's strange because I can be out in the pouring rain or snow with no slow down then just randomly with nothing going on it stutters. I haven't had any slowdown that when I fight a horde so that makes the open world slow down even more odd.

I heard they worked very diligently to make sure that the game didn't have slowdown during hordes. I guess they didn't work quite so hard to make sure it didn't happen elsewhere.

Funny thing is that slowdown doesn't seem to happen much earlier in the game, it's not rampant later either but it does happen more often.

The bike challenges look fun. I have a feeling that I'll learn I'm not quite as skillful on the bike as I imagine, when I try them... Maybe I'll avoid the challenges and retain the illusion of how awesome I am.

I'm certainly interested at the prospect of endless wave hordes, go until your ammo runs out I guess.... It's been a minute since I fired up the game, guess this'll pull me back in.
