Sony does own the IP. I remember as the credits rolled at the end its says something like "DS a Registered Trademark of Sony Interactive".
It was a surprise to me because I had thought Kojima wouldn't let another one of his creations out of his control. But that was the only way Sony would fund it. I have read that the game he really wants to make and is pouring his creative mind behind is the game that features his new company's mascot "Ludens".
I doubt we'll ever see a sequel to Death Stranding. I loved it but not enough gamers did.

Norman Reedus, Daryl Dixon on The Walking Dead, indicated that Death Stranding 2 might happen.
"I think we're doing a second Death Stranding," Reedus told reporter Vitória Pratini of AdoroCinema, IGN Brasil's partner site. "[The game] is on negotiations. So… Yay! ", celebrated the actor, in front of the excitement of the journalists present at the roundtable about the 11th season of The Walking Dead.
It remains to be seen whether the actor was referring to the director's version of Death Stranding, which will be released in September for PS5. Director's Cut will feature additional content, including new facilities, weapons and items, as well as the Social Strand System, which will enable competitive mode.
Comparing his most famous characters, Norman Reedus commented on who would win a marathon: Daryl Dixon from The Walking Dead or Sam Porter Bridges from Death Stranding. After all, the former spent years walking through the zombie apocalypse looking for Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), and the latter delivers packages in a hostile open-world environment.
"It would definitely be Sam Porter Bridges. He's got the suit, the motorcycle... Wait, they both have motorcycles. He's got that exoskeleton he can race with," Reedus said. "Daryl is in Georgia, it's very hot. So he could pass out. Norman, on the other hand, would just take a bus," he joked.
From what I've been reading, seems Death Stranding 1 is a love it or hate it type of game. Have the DC preordered and hoping the experience will be a good one.

Okay, so you got the book going on, you've got the final season coming out, then the spinoff, and you're filming Death Stranding, the video game.
We just started the second one.
How did that come about?
Guillermo Del Toro, who gave me my first movie, called me up and said, "Hey, there's a guy named Hideo Kojima, he's gonna call you, just say yes." And I go, "What do you mean just say yes?" He goes, "Stop being an a******, just say yes." Then I was in San Diego and Hideo came with a big group of people, he's from Tokyo, and he showed me what he was working on on a game called Silent Hill. I was blown away by what he was showing me, and I was like, "Yes, let's do this." It's not Ms. Pacman; it's so realistic, it's so futuristic, it's so complicated and beautiful, and I was completely blown away.
It took me maybe two or three years to finish all the MoCap sessions and everything. It takes a lot of work. And then the game came out, and it just won all these awards, and it was a huge thing, so we just started part two of that.

Weird that they’ve (Kojima and or Sony) never mentioned a two game deal. Both of them (especially Sony) usually mashes some sort of mention. Wonder of Kojima wants to negotiate and allow the second one to be on switch. And what’s too stop them from making a DS version only with Mii’s and allow it, the switch, to insert your mii in other passerbyers switch’s?Game of this gen Swede ?

Hm the plot thickens
Maybe they only have the exclusive rights to the first game on console. As Sony didn’t publish it on PC. Who’s to stop death stranding from showing up anywhere else like metal gear showing up on Xbox only with an extra moniker/subtitle under its name?
Honestly no one in the know will say, we’re all just speculating like a feather in the wind…
That was forced on Sony otherwise they would have lost the rights completely.
Do Sony even own the DS IP if DS 2 was offered to Google as a Stadia exclusive.
