SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATVI), and Bungie today confirmed millions of people have played their upcoming and award-winning game Destiny during their beta test to gather vital information in preparation for launch. The Destiny Beta included a sampling of major activities featured in the full game. The beta began first on PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®3 on July 17 and came to a close Sunday evening, with 4,638,937 unique players participating.

"This is the biggest beta of this console generation by a wide margin and the largest console beta ever for a new video game IP to date," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. "Hosting a beta at this scale is an incredible feat, so we're thrilled to see the phenomenal response. But the beta is just a taste of what's to come. We're counting down the days to our launch day, September 9th."

"We were totally blown away by the number of people who played the beta," said Pete Parsons, COO of Bungie. "We surpassed even our own goals and the feedback was invaluable. We cannot thank the community enough, the response was humbling and in the weeks ahead we'll be working hard to ensure that Destiny lives up to the expectations at launch."

I enjoyed the beta alot and hyped me up more for the full release than before. Too bad xbox players didnt get as long a time to play as ps4 players did though.

I'm skipping this game, it didn't quite have what I was expecting or looking for.

There was one thing about the game though, that was particularly awesome; the sound design and music. Anyone that didn't play this game on a proper 7.1 setup or at the very least with a decent set of headphones.... you missed out on a real treat. The gun sound effects, powers and mix were all great and the music was incredible. I'll definitely be picking up the OST when that drops.

I'm getting it. This was a game I was on the fence about getting. I'm not a multiplayer kind of player but I loved the look of this game. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed playing co-op together and I played through the strike mission about six times with and without her. My husband, who was not interested at all ended up playing the beta too after watching us playing and decided to check it out and he also is now looking forward to it.

I installed it but never played. Do I count?
Probably.

Interested to see how much this game actually sells. Probably no where near 4 million, but should be good. I know I'll be contributing to that number.

Kinda disappointing numbers in a way when you consider what Activision is hoping this game will sell. I do like what I've seen though. Can't deny that. Seems like another quality game from Bungie overall. Fingers crossed that it's huge for them.

IDK, I think those numbers are pretty decent, especially for a new IP, but it is Bungie after all. If they can move even 4 million the series should he off to a good start.

Activision is supposedly fudge packing some serious ad campaigns behind Destiny. Very expensive investment. It depends on the ultimate goals, but my guessing is that Acti is looking to make this as big a franchise as possible.

Now that's impressive. 4.6 million people just for a beta. It's Bungie's destiny to do well with this game.

Oh yeah, $500 million, I would think they're looking to make it as big as possible. I still think that 4+ million for the first release would be good, and hopefully build upon that for the sequels.

That's what all the DLC is for...

If the game has 32 story missions sans expansion packs, then I'm definitely buying it. If it's 21 without expansions, well... maybe not. Especially when the DLC pack is not coming out until way later in 2015 for Xbox One. For now though, I think I will buy it.

I was being a bit sarcastic with the DLC comment. I'm hoping they give a somewhat meaty retail release, and then augmented with DLC. hopefully it's not a bare bones retail that almost forces the DLC to make it a worthwhile endeavor.

The first DLC isn't hitting till Feb. 2015? That'sa but of a wait, especially if the game is on the light side...

I reckon it will do 4 million easy, especially across all consoles.

Am I a unique player since I played on Xbox One and PS4 or am I two unique players?
