Detroit: Become Human

Nice to see a big, fat-ass woman in a videogame. Everyone in videogames always has perfect bodies. Not Rose, y'all. Of course, she kind of fits a stereotype, but what the hell.

Ever seen The Hateful Eight? That's Minnie.

I would rather they all look like North....

Just finished. I really enjoyed it.

I was much more emotionally engaged with Detroit than I've been with previous Cage games. With Indigo Prophecy, I was intrigued and sort of mystified. Heavy Rain was occasionally dramatic. I couldn't get into Beyond. But Detroit had me interested from start to finish. I liked all the characters, and the balance between their stories was really effective.

There were a lot of dramatic moments and difficult choices with serious ramifications. The writing is so much better than in his previous games. Yeah, it can be heavy handed and unsubtle, but they took on serious themes. I liked that the game often gave you a feeling of moral elevation or inspiration, the sense of doing the right thing or good thing.

9 out of 10 for me. One of my favorite games of the year. I will be going back later to replay it and see what happens when I make different choices. I need to let it sit for a little while first, though, and absorb how my story turned out, before I go back and start monkeying with it.

This should literally be the ending

I even heard Crapgamer praising it, saying it was phenomenal, gave it 9/10.

Looking forward to starting this once I've finished God of War side quests, is it living up to the hype?

I am nearing the end. The game is indeed consistent with his other offering that I played, Heavy Rain. I can tell that I prefer Heavy Rain over this so far. The game is good, the story is interesting. I will give my tiny review of this game here shortly. I hope to have it done by this weekend.

Metacritic is 79. It's taking some hits from people who don't like David Cage and people who just don't like these sorts of "interactive adventure" games. For instance, Angry Joe gave it a 7, saying he really enjoyed it, but 7 is the highest score he could ever give to an interactive adventure game.

The general buzz on the game is very positive, though. If you read the impressions on Resetera, they are 85% very positive, with people routinely saying that this is the best game Quantic Dream has ever produced. I agree with that. I think it's a really good game -- if you like these types of games. A lot of people don't, of course, and the game is not for them.

I can't see how game has an 80 on open critic and God Of War has like 95. There is not a 15 point difference between both games. Detroit is easily and 85 and I would give it a 9 just like you Andy. I was more shocked about how good Detroit was than God Of War as I expected it is be great but I didn't expect Detroit to be so freaking great.

Same here. I think Detroit really took some hits in the reviews because of the factors I mentioned above, along with maybe some offended political sensitivities. Plus you had that #metoo-related stuff a few months prior to release, which reinforced the Cage hate. It's been a divisive game, and divisive games can end up in this range. God of War wasn't divisive at all. It's a crowd pleaser; pretty much everyone enjoys it. Detroit appeals to a more niche audience and has Cage at the wheel, trying to tackle themes related to racism, slavery, domestic abuse, etc, in an era of identity politics. It was bound to run into trouble.

It's selling well, from what we can tell. In Japan, it has already exceeded Heavy Rain's lifetime sales. There have also been two tweets from QD referring to "best launch ever" and "most successful QD game." So despite the average-appearing overall score, it seems to be selling pretty well. I think good word of mouth will help.

I'd also like Sony to buy QD as they are like the only publisher who is investing big money in these types of games. Detroit has shown to me that they are a highly skilled developer and they are adept at creating new I.P. I would love a Detroit sequel though but it would be tough considering how much can change with your characters.

He's beginning to crack. A guy can only take so much. I read a comment that Xbots are the androids in Detroit: Become Human. There's about to be a revolution. Fitting to say the least.

Replaying the game. I forgot how slow the stories start. Things are starting to get good, though. Knocked Todd out, ran away with Alice.

Angry Joe said that? what a dip s***! He needs to get into a new line of work if he's going to limit himself that way, good is good regardless of the type of game. I would never say I'm a fan of this genre but a good game can change my mind, Until Dawn was a nice surprise and I'd give that game an 8 or 8.5 based on the enjoyment factor. It captured that 80's style horror movie feeling perfectly, I have only played a bit of Heavy Rain because it came free with Detroit and the story seems ok but I do have complaints with some of the inputs. I haven't gotten very far in Detroit yet because I keep getting sidetracked with ES Online and Oblivion but I to intend to start putting some serious time into it this week. I know it's a beautiful game, it'll be awesome when we can get GTA type games to look like this.

Finished the game 2 days ago. I have to say, the game was good, but not my favorite Cage game. I loved the flow chart, that is a great addition including the world stats for each choice. The graphics, of course those look awesome. Some of the best I have seen. Though they should be awesome, as linear as the game is, and not many effects. The ability to reconstruct events with Connor was unique. I like how they tied the different story arcs together. The story was good, but seemed a bit pushy and predictable. The political agenda on slavery, androids taking human jobs, peace vs. violence pushed over and over seems a bit much IMO.

I never felt any connection with a character, maybe because you play as multiple characters. Granted, it was hard not to like the Lieutenant and Alice, though you don't play as them. The game play it self, felt rather boring. I almost would have rather have just had the game be a movie, that was interactive that let me choose the direction real time. There just wasn't enough, game wise, to keep me "excited" during the game. The occasional QTE fights are what kept me alert however. I have to say, I liked the way Quantum Break did the story direction choices. And in that scenario, while Detroit graphics are stellar, looking near human like, Quantum Break actually has real humans...the best graphics of all. It was a bigger mix of the interactive story and game play.

The camera was also wonky in this game, and resetting the camera angle with the trigger/bumper was somewhat annoying. There were occasional stutters or freezes, albeit very short. I noticed I had received a patch for the game, but it was too late to see the improvements as I was just about done.

Heavy Rain and Until Dawn also left a long lasting impression on me, where as Detroit is almost forgettable to me now. I do see there is replay value in the game for those that enjoyed it a lot and want to see new outcomes. Sadly not so much for me. I love that they have the gallery, videos, artwork for you to buy with in game points, but that seems a little tacked on. Just make them all available to us at completion of the game, or even from the start.

I still look forward to more David Cage games because nobody is making David Cage games. They are unique and keep single player story driven games alive.

My score is a 7/10.

I can see how you'd give it a 7, if you didn't feel a connection with any of the characters. Sounds like you weren't a huge fan of the story, either. If you aren't hooked into characters and story -- in a game like this -- it's going to be pretty thin.

I liked two of the characters, wasn't sure about Markus. As for the story, I agree the writing is heavy handed, but it sets up a lot of interesting choice scenes with lots of drama, so it's what Cage is arguably best at. So I don't mind.

I liked the characters and writing here better than in HR, which didn't have much of an impact on me, personally.

Detroit's user rating is 8.8, so it's doing well there.

My favorite character is the lieutenant. He played a great role with Connor. I would love to see Hank in a spin off game, any genre.

Detroit sold 1 million in 2 weeks. That's their fastest selling title ever, I believe.

I think I probably enjoyed Heavy Rain at the time more than this but there is no question that Detroit is the better game because of its better acting and writing.

Sales: "We have just passed the million mark sold for Detroit: Become Human, two weeks after the release of the game, said Guillaume de Fondaumiere, the deputy CEO of the French independent studio. This is clearly our best start. The previous title of this flagship of narrative video games, Heavy Rain, in 2014, took five weeks to break the milestone of one million copies."

In other Detroit news, Cage did a Reddit Q & A. It was a pretty interesting read. Among other things, he hints at possible DLC for Detroit involving one of the character's backstory.

There are so many characters in Detroit that could have a DLC about their backstories that it may be difficult to chose one... Actually, I wrote backstories for almost all the characters in the game, so I have a pretty good idea of what happened to them before the game started... But between people wanting investigations with Connor, a full sequel and DLC about all characters, we will need to make a choice ;-)

My guess is that any DLC would feature Connor, since he has been the fan favorite, and I think it would be easier and more interesting to tell a self-contained backstory about him. You could write about Kara getting beat up multiple times, or the Markus/Carl relationship, but that would be kind of dull. So I'm guessing it would be some detective story with Connor.

However, keep in mind that Heavy Rain was hinted to have several DLCs involving characters' backstories, and they never came out. So who knows.

Also, he hints about a possible return for Chloe:

It was a real surprise to see how popular Chloe has become. The idea of having her as the hostess came in the last six months of development. We were wondering how we could make the main menu a little bit more interesting, and we imagined that an android talking to the player would be an amazing hostess. It got written and implemented very quickly. We had a lot of fun writing lines for her, and it was great to see people's reactions.

Let's see what the future holds for Chloe ;-)

He also expresses interest in making a multiplayer game.

I am very interested by creating a narrative multiplayer game for a long time. There are some creative and technical challenges to overcome and you need the right story to tell, but this is something very exciting... Convincing publishers of trying it is actually another challenge, but this is definitely something I would like to try in a near future.

I'm playing this through a second time. I'm about halfway done. I am playing Marcus violent this time, and it's a lot different. I also spared Chloe (last time I shot her for info), which marks you as deviant much earlier. Conversations with Hank are a highlight, and I'm enjoying Bad Marcus.

Finished my second playthrough. The android rebellion won this time. Good replay value. I saw lots of new content.

Finally put more time into it over the last couple of days, they do a great job of ramping up the intensity and story telling. I got bored early in Heavy Rain and haven't finished it yet, this game is really engaging IMO and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes.
