Do next-gen games offer anything new, besides prettier graphics?

Not to turn this in to some console war thread, but it seems the PS4 ( at launch) is nothing but graphics. Where as the Xbox one seems to be doing different things. I mean Forza has that new A.I stuff going on. DR3 has that huge Zombie count. Then you have Ryse which is the graphical show piece.

Do any of the PS4 launch games really do anything outside of graphics different to this gen ? I look at early games like Killzone, Knack, Infamous and Drive Club( Ryse would also be included) and I think hmmm..... that could be done this gen just with lower graphics quality ( Like a cross gen game). Is that a fair observation ?

This is a *very* fair, and accurate observation - and I'm really glad to read that someone is picking up on that.

I agree, though it remains to be seen if any of the "next gen ideas" translate to a better gaming experience. X1 certainly looks to have the more interesting exclusive lineup. I have all 3 of the "major" exclusives you named preordered. I'm seriously going to have a massive backlog just starting the generation off. I haven't played anything of Killzone other than the intro, and that was the game I expected I'd be playing a ton of all weekend. Haven't even seen what AC looks like yet. Luckily not much coming until March or so, so I'll hopefully have some time to make a little bit of a dent in all of these games. I'm not complaining, it's a fun problem to have. Both of these systems were much too long overdue. Even these minorly improved games (COD) seem like a pretty big deal at this point.
Oh yeah...I agree. It is still to b seen if things like Forza A.I really is a good thing, and yeah...Too many games is a very nice problem to have.

The 3 XBO games you mentioned I would never consider buying with Forza 5 being the best of the 3.
I think XBO's 1st party launch titles are sub-par.
Yeah, thanks for not actually responding to what was said and responding with this worthless and rather pointless post.

DR 1 and 2 were all about zombie count as well so I don't get that being one of your examples to be honest.
I agree. DR1 and 2 had decent zombie counts too, but not even close to what DR3 is doing. When you considering the amount on screen at any one time, and the game world size, and then no loading times too. I do not think it would be possible at all on current gen hardware. Although...I guess it is fair to say this is a natural progression more than new.

But can you say the same for the PS4 early games I mentioned ? Killzone hasn't exactly upped the MP numbers or scale. They haven't added things like destructible environments...etc. Just a prettier Killzone. I just wanted folks ( who have PS4's right now) to give feedback with in that regard( the xbox one references were more for context. Not straight up comparison). As in what Separates launch games from current gen apart from the obvious graphics.

So I take it from this that PS4 games do nothing but graphics then ? Why is it so hard for people to ignore the xbox part and answer the actual question ?

What are you wanting to know exactly? there are games from just about every genre other than RPG already on the console and it's only been out for 2 days. Is anything innovative yet in it's first 2 days? hard to answer since I don't think anyone has played every single game but there is a lot of quality stuff out there. NFS sounds like it's MP integration is a bit innovative, yes that's 3rd party but they are doing something that I don't think was done on current gen.

Not innovation. Just....what are games doing beyond current gen and mere graphics. Specifically the exclusive titles, but info of similar regard for 3rd party is also welcome.

I get it. You are asking what are people experiencing as truly unique to having a next gen title other than graphics upgrade.

I don't think there will be much beyond expected upgrades for the most part for launch titles as most are coming out of last gen. I'd really expect 2nd wave stuff to start showing it more. Things that are there today that are due to next gen are mostly under the hood or behind the scenes. Only some games will show new things in smaller capacity, like DR3 with it's Smartglass integration.

I think variety is nice, both platforms offer this, or at least if you buy both.

Can't wait.

Its far too early to say. The next gen isn't even a week old. Give consumers time to play through some of these games first.

Seeing as next-gen graphics are only a marginal leap, and already outpaced by a moderate gaming PC, I would say there better be more to the next-gen than turning the graphic setting from medium to high.

Off the top of my head:

X1
- Dedi servers/cloud
- Built in video uploading
- All the TV snapping stuff
- Better matchmaking/rep system
- More Kinect

PS4
- Built in video uploading
- Touchpad
- Vita remote play

I took menace to be talking specifically about game design, not about console or controller features. There's some overlap there, but his examples were of in-game stuff like better AI and bigger crowds.

Doesn't seem to be much more than marginally better graphics on most games so far. Once we get some legs on this gen I'm positive we'll see stuff not possible last gen (weird calling the PS3/360 last gen).

Exactly.....we have just seen but a fraction of what this gen will offer. It's going to take time.

I haven't played the ps4 outside the kiosk at best buy but I would have to say the remote play looks like a next gen feature.I would also say 64 player on live with BF4 is next gen on PS4.I kinda get the feeling it has a upgraded this gen UI also but I could be wrong.

Wait....I thought it was all about resolutions and counting pixels and '50%' more 'powa!'
Gameplay doesn't matter.

LOL.
I was going to get a PS4 @ launch but I will wait now. I want to see what the Xb1 does and what the games reviewed are like. Still getting both though.
By and large I agree with you though. I really don't see anything done differently besides prettier graphics.

This is what I was saying before, games will be games on both platforms. Its the software and service outside is what change the experience of a player. X1 can snap just about anything you can think of while playing or other things beside gaming.

This will change a life style of gamers once they get the hang of things.

I generally find that to be the case in most console launches.

The biggest innovations in the console space since the advent of 3D have been motion control and online gaming. Other stuff can pretty much all be filed under "more, bigger".

That said, better graphics isn't a terrible thing - the SNES was a pretty awesome upgrade over the NES. Mode 7 and the FX chip that came later were something "undoable" on the NES, but most SNES games and arguably the best ones didn't even use them.

The touchpad/button on the DS4 is pretty neat. In Killzone, you can use it to swipe up, down, left/right to select the Owl's mode to attack, zipline, shield etc. I thought that was pretty cool.

I think I've also read up on a game using the touchpad to pinch in and out to enlarge or shrink the world map?

It will be cool to see what other things could be planned for this touchpad/button to be integrated into gameplay.
