Personally I wish they'd just go away. Feels like the only reason we still have this is so people can get rich making back room deals and to give companies a huge advertising medium.

I think the original intent of the Games was to set aside differences while coming together to compete in a neutral setting. I agree the heavy commercial interest makes this very not neutral.

Kind of the same for cities competing to host the games and dumping tax payer money into infrastracture hoping The Olympics will somehow be a stimulus to their local economy.

It is also twisted by politics when any nation wants to pump their athletes full of drug cocktails to win just to prove their country's supposed superiority.

Big Olympics fan, although time difference makes it a little harder to watch.

I'm kind of torn and see both sides. On one hand it is a really cool thing to watch, but I also see the modern problems with it.

The biggest problem I see is that these places build all these facilities that often end up neglected and falling apart. Honestly it seems like a big money loser for the host country now.

The good
- A spectacle that happens every two years (summer and winter alternate), with a big intro and ending ceremony
- Lots of sporting events, so there should be at least a few some people will like

The bad
- The ceremonies are now part live/part CGI like it's a tv ad. When it's the CGI part, I don't even know what happens in the actual stadium. Do the fans sit there and told to watch the screen even though live actors are standing in the middle of the field?
- TV channels show too much wasted space like athlete bios. Show more actual events whether it's live or a replay
- Too many events. Too many sports have too many variations. That's why some good athletes can scoop up 10 medals. When there's probably 10-15 different swimming events and probably 30 iterations of running, that's why Phelps can win that many while something like basketball or hockey which a week long tournament across 5-6 games, its athletes win one medal
- So many events nobody even knows them all, when they are happening, and tv coverage is limited to whatever events tv channels feels like showing. Sounds crazy, but I wouldn't mind seeing archery and seeing guys hit bulls eyes, but when was the last time archery was ever shown on tv? I don't think I've ever seen it... probably because no US or Canadian people are good at it so they don't bother showing it
- Not enough pro players. It's the Olympics. It's supposed to be about "being the best", "gold medals" and "world record holders". If that's the claim, then let whomever is the best attend pro or not. The more pros the better. Watching boxing where guys wear head gear with 18 year old no-names doesn't make sense. How are these guys "the best", when a pro boxer whose probably ranked 60th could squash him?
- If esports makes it. If it does, then you might as well add in cellphone speed texting

They are what they are.

What I love about them... In Australia, If you're a gay man wanting to hook up, Goto the gym when the swimming events are on! Straight Aussies love the swimming stuff, and they won't be present. Gays treat it as a costume competition.

If you want to do something freaky, Goto a bar after the rowing. Rowing isn't really a thing. They don't even need to wear Lycra. But still, everyone has freaky sex after watching the rowing.

If you want disappointing sex, go on Grindr during the gymnastics.

I'll keep this in mind if I ever get to go there.

I enjoy them, especially Olympic Hockey, but I hate the seedy nature of it all. The Olympics need to evolve to something less monstrous.

Yup, I enjoy them. I turn on NBC, boom, there is the Olympics, and I sit and watch and enjoy. I don't read into any of it. I just marvel at the talent some of these people have. I love it.

I was watching them ski through the moguls the other day, and I was thinking to my self, if I tried that, my knees would go up and right through my face and head on the first one. Then I would of course fall down, slide over the first ramp, and then snap my back in half, and lodge my penis in my ear.

Yea I've never tried moguls. When I was younger and more daring I sucked ass at skiing. Now that I'm good at skiing I'm too old to try that or any tricks that will end up on a stretcher.

As far as Winter Olympics go, I love the DH, GS and all snowboard events, especially the Cross events. The wipeouts are crazy!

I'm not into snowboarding at all, BUT the wipeouts are fantastic. I don't think another sport has 50% of athletes messing up and falling on their ass. I don't know which event it's called, but the one where they ride down, do some balancing on rails and then 3-4 big jumps porbably had a clean success rate of 25% tops. Almost everyone screwed up somehow.

By the way, it's over but the mixed doubles Russian curler is great looking..... and I mean the female. lol. Best part of watching the curling events!

At least the ponytail is feminine.

I like them...Hell, it’s only 2 weeks every 4 years.
But I’m only into certain events...like the halfpipe.
Congrats to Shawn White, that was a stellar run.

I agree with Bill Murray though: every Olympic event should feature an average person doing it first so it can really show perspective.

Shawn White wins gold and Trumpies s***ting their pants because he's not following "flag protocol."

I live in a CO ski town. I can tell you that this is a lot of people's lives, practically training since they learn to ski at age 2 or 3. They train school kids in my town, to do things like slalom and ski jumping. They live for this.

Me, I don't know. If they had a snowboarding competition where on a powder day, you drink beer and go into the trees and smoke a bowl, huck off a couple rocks, navigate out of bounds to the point where you need to make it back to the cat track or else get stuck in the wilderness and hopefully rescued...yeah, I've got that sh!t...No wait, that's what the vast majority of skiers and boarders do that choose to live here. Skiing and snowboarding are so much more fun when it's not a competition. I've seen kids here grow up not caring for it anymore because they used to train so hard doing it. That doesn't mean I have any less respect for those that make it big time.

To those who think any less out of these athletes, I say not only should they include regular people to see what these athletes would look like next to, but people who are actually " really good". There are people in my town whom I think are amazing skiers and boarders. They can do things that I wish I could have done when I was younger... The fact is, they would STILL look silly next to an Olympian.

...and next to the average visitor we get, I look like a damn wizard out there, on a snowboard. It's what living in a ski town for 10 years will do. Next to an Olympian, I wouldn't land a single one of those big jumps, and it would be a miracle if I survived a whole course.

Was skiing last night and a little girl was looking like the next Lindsey Vonn. She couldn't have been more than 6 or so and was ripping carved turns, almost as fast as me. Well she was doing good until the bottom and tried going through the gate into the lift line too fast and ran into the pole lol. She was ok at least but I had to hold back from laughing.

I fondly remember the 84 Olympics because they were in my home town and they had the jet pack guy. Everyone was talking about how spectacular it was, so I just assumed it was the best thing ever.

Took me a while to realize it's just a glorified advertisement for whatever country/state happens to push hard enough for their turn. And that it can destroy their economy if it's in a country that can't handle the strain.

The athletes are amazing though. I think the world should all contribute to a single massive Olympic Stadium (ok, two including winter) that isn't bound by any nationality. It's like a "neutral zone". No one country or private entity owns the field. They can use it every year, build on it...improve it.

That way it isn't about any host country/state but about the games. It should just be about the f***ing games.

Finally got some skiing last night and then had to work late. I did catch a bit of the men's downhill but I was late to women's GS first run (except for women from countries that don't get snow lol?), and then was too tired for their second run. Yay for Mikaela Shiffrin though. As big as a fan of Vonn that I am, I have even higher hopes for Shiffrin due to her being involved in more disciplines. Sucks that Julia Mancuso retired though. :(

Ive never even seen snow lol.

I bought a Groupon once to try curling at the local ice skating place, and and the dude kept telling me I wasn't sweeping enough.

I was all "Bitch! I'm an apprentice hairdresser! All I do is sweep for 40 hours a week!"

There was a free pie afterwards. Worst. Date. Ever.

Love em. Been watching as much as I can as winter Olympics have always been my favorite. Like snowboarding slopestyle, snowboard cross, and curling the most.

I actually looked into it and I may try curling in a couple weeks in Brooklyn.

New Zealand has some good skiing. Not too far away for a week getaway?

Yeah, and it's dirt cheap compared to going to the snow here too.

The closest snow to me is Mt Bulla, but compared to Europe/Asia/The Americas, it's a bit of a joke, and 3 days will costs you about $5k.

Or, you could fly to NZ for $100, and spend two weeks there for the same amount.

I really should attempt going some time. My friends and I really aren't the "Doing stuff" kind of people most of the time. We take holidays based on wineries, bars and theme parks, but I think we're getting too old for that now.

Ive always wanted a white Xmas, and my cannuck friends have made the offer a few times, but it's too hard to get away from work at that time.
