Restricting the PS5 to a niche audience could be a big problem. Video games research provider Newzoo has classified gamers into eight categories. A bird’s eye view of those categories indicates that the majority of gamers don’t fall in the hardcore category that Sony is targeting.

Just over a third of the gamers belong to the hardcore category according to Newzoo’s classification. These include those types of gamers who will spend money on hardware, though to varying degrees. For example, only 9% of the gamers are hardware enthusiast who will keep up with the latest machines, while 13% belong to the “ultimate gamer” category that spends all of their money on games.

On the other hand, 46% of gamers belong to the “time filler” and “cloud gamer” category. The time filler plays a game only when he or she has to kill time, while the cloud gamer inclines toward streaming services and doesn’t believe in spending a ton on hardware.

...

Sony’s competition is looking to tap into a much wider universe of gamers by supporting more than just big-budget tiles that requires premium hardware. This could pose a problem as focusing on the premium end of the market with a costly console and pricey games could price out a big chunk of gamers and dent sales of the PlayStation 5.

These articles are so stupid, Sony has killed it this gen and saying they aren't going to focus as much on indie titles isn't going to hurt them. The streaming thing is pie in the sky and will be for a long time, there isn't going to be a huge audience for streaming games to tablet or phones, Stadia will be DOA due to price etc. When they keep talking "cloud gamer" they are talking mobile gamer, I've never heard a person who bought a console say "man I wish I could just pay a fee and play this on my phone or tablet" lol. Those are areas to try to squeeze a little more money out of but they aren't going to be places that bring in serious money for console makers for a long time.

I Highly doubt that the PS5 launch will be a failure. In fact, more than likely it will sell out and be a hard to find item for months, like most new consoles are.

PS4 and Xbox One weren't hard to find at launch around here.

They were pretty scarce in my redneck part of the country for sure. The shelves at every Walmart I went to for the first few months were always empty.

Yeah I live about 12 miles from downtown LA and all of the normal retailers in the area were selling them as soon as they came in for months. I still remember someone here (don't remember who) kept trying to deny it was selling out, they lived in the DC area I believe and they kept saying "all the gamestops have them in my area" so I called a few just for the hell of it and they were all sold out, told the person here and got the "oh they just say that over the phone" lol.

Dumb terms. I mean what is a "hardcore game?" They don't really exist. We are all gamers and games that interest us vary wildly.

What is going to be so different between the "for the gamers" gen and the for "the hardcore gamer' gen? Nothing.

These articles are so stupid,

Wrong. This article are stupid (like this guy are sick). It's the same article from the other thread. It seems like applying some limited set of facts from some research of questionable value based on predictions about Sony's strategy that were pulled out of some random dude's ass.

I should have said "articles like this one" my apologies :) There have been other people saying that their focus is a mistake.
