Bandai Namco has announced Dragon Ball Fighters, a new 2.5D fighting game for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC developed by Arc System Works and due out worldwide in early 2018.

The game uses a three-versus-three team battle system, allowing players to determine the compatibility between characters and form a team of fighters. It will incorporate the “ultra high speed battles” and “flashy special moves” that the Dragon Ball series is known for.

According to producer Tomoko Hiroki, while Dragon Ball titles of recent years have been 3D, they chose 2.5D this time because there were some things that can only be done in that style. While it looks like 2D animation at first glance, it has a broader range of expression as they can shift camera angles and incorporate a lot of unique production not possible in 2D alone.

It should be noted that the press release for this announcement is dated June 12, meaning that Bandai Namco accidentally shared this information ahead of its official reveal. A backup of the press release is available here. The official Japanese website will be available here when the game is officially announced.

I suck at fighting games but sometimes I buy them just because they're pretty or put together well. This may fall into one of those categories.

I was literally just watching the trailer again for the billionth time. If the gameplay holds up, I'm going to definitely buy this.

Watched some gameplay footage from Maximilian. Not a DBZ fan but it does look good.

I know. MVCI could have already been so much better..the lacklustre base roster, the bland animations and graphics. The roster is so piss poor. I guess UMVCI can't come soon enough.

It's great to see how they incorporated Goku's manga and anime movements into the game.

Man, Imagine this art style with the cell shaded beauty of this game

Oh man..that music..definintely one of my most favorite fighters in the Dreamcast era. This was when they handled extra chars the right way. Lots of popular chars and they were all unlockable within the game.
Yeah, the music was a low point for me, but it is certainly memorable!

Anybody know if the control system is more like Street Fighter or more like Mortal Kombat, i.e., sweeping motions in Street Fighter and directional presses in Mortal Kombat?

There was a tournament at Evo 2017. This is the top 8. The game's looking really fun even with just this small cast available. Two new characters are going to be shown next friday.
