Chris Avellone (e.g., Fallout New Vegas) is narrative designer, and the writers who did the Bloody Baron quest in Witcher 3 are also on the project.

The first Dying Light was a great game and they are still adding additional gameplay to it. Very well supported.

Dying Light team already has a devoted fanbase, now they want the attention of critics

Dying Light is a unique creation of the Wroclaw, Poland-based studio, a potent blend of melee combat and parkour. Players spend their time either leaping from rooftop to rooftop, a la Mirror’s Edge, or bashing in the brains of zombies in the style of Condemned. But, early on, the gaming press largely slept on the game.

[....] Since 2015, he said that Dying Light has been played by more than 13 million people. Even more surprising, it’s still seeing over 500,000 unique players each week.

.... The big addition this time around is a branching storyline, produced with help of Chris Avellone, whose writing credits include Fallout 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Prey (2017) and many other games. Smektala explained that world of Dying Light 2 will be broken up into multiple districts. A player’s actions inside each district will determine which of the game’s multiple factions take control. That, in effect, will help determine the outcome of the game. "

An example of how the city can change, depending on your actions:

Excerpts from another article:

"The takeaway: they’ve turned the dials up on everything. The sequel will have twice the amount of parkour manoeuvres, the urban map will be four times bigger, the day and night cycle has been re-worked, and it’ll have a city that changes based on which factions you suck up to."

"So far they seem to be ticking off every “could be improved” box from the first game."

From pen and paper to Dying Light 2 – Chris Avellone wants to flip the RPG script

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Alpha Protocol, Fallout 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity, and Divinity: Original Sin 2. You might assume this is simply a list of some of the best, most reactive RPGs ever made, but it’s actually just some of the amazing video games Chris Avellone has written for.

Every game Avellone works on seems to benefit from his pen, every experience offering branching narratives and worlds that react to the player, even outside of scripted dialogue sequences.

...

“Working in video games is a lot like being a virtual gamemaster,” he explains, “so many of those techniques for making sure the player is entertained are much the same as being a tabletop gamemaster.”

...

As an action game, there’s not much it needed to do to improve, so Techland decided instead to focus on the writing, turning it into an action RPG that reacts to everything you do. With Avellone on the writing team, along with Karolina Stachyra, a writer who worked on The Witcher 3’s Bloody Baron questline, you should be very excited.

...

The concept has been the same since the very beginning, and Avellone has been on the project since that planning phase. He created the lore for Dying Light 2, he co-created the storyline along with the other talented writers, and he developed many of the game’s critical characters. The reactivity, which Techland dubs the ‘World System’, was also co-created by Avellone, working closely with designers and programmers at Techland. His grubby, gamesmaster mitts are all over everything.

...

Dying Light 2 might be a zombie game, but there are some brains pulsating beneath that squishy exterior. From what we’ve learned so far, it will be unlike any zombie game you’ve played before.

“I’m addicted to challenging a lot of tropes, and trying to flip them on their head and see what shakes out story-wise,” Avellone says. “I also tend to favor antagonists and rivals that have a higher agenda – not because it makes them superior, but because ideally players don’t just want to prove themselves physically superior, but they also want to challenge your enemy’s philosophy to the point where it breaks down… which I see as a far superior victory to simply punching an enemy’s lights out.”

Most definitely, the first game is an awesome game. I, and a bunch of my friends, played the crap outta it, some of the best co-op gaming the beginning of this gen. Looking forward to the second game.

I didn't play the first, and I'm as zombie fatigued as the next guy -- even though I haven't actually played that many zombie games -- but this one looks to be doing things pretty differently. A parkour/melee zombie RPG? That could be good. And they are serious about the writing, because these guys have chops.

Hm, ok. I'll put it on my list. It was really the writers and RPG elements that caught my attention for DL2, but if the first game is fun, I'll check it out.

The first game is awesome, and it's on sale regularly too. The base game and expansion can usually be had for $20. Its sooooo good in co-op

The first one was unbelievable. They'll knock it out of the park, Dying Light 2 will be amazing.

Yes it was! I still play that game as much as anything else. This time Techland has way more resources and the experience of making the first one. It's gonna be f*cking epic!

I played this with a friend and it was a blast. One of my all time favorite gaming experiences.

I only ever played a very small amount of the first game, had rented it from Gamefly and another game I wanted to play came along so had to send it back. I was really impressed with the reveal they showed for this one last year though, so will be keeping an eye on it for sure....
