Invested they have. Xbox Game Studios is going all out this year. I suspect next year might bring us some new IPs as well. This year so far:

  • Ori and the Will of the Wisps - March 11
  • Bleeding Edge - March 24
  • Minecraft Dungeons - April
  • Gears Tactics - April 28
  • Grounded - Early Access Spring
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator - 2020
  • Battletoads - 2020
  • Psychonauts 2 - 2020
  • Wasteland 3 - May 19
  • Halo Infinite - Holiday 2020

I wonder if there will be a Forza release this year too. XGS is busy.

Nobody talks about DOA 4
The people that play the series do. I never hear anything about Nioh either from fans of the genre or people that played it in regards to old/new action games. DMC5 for example however is mentioned alot. The point is they compare other games to it as the new standard or how it's a classic or the best iteration or arguably even best in its genre. DOA4 is hands down the best iteration of DOA. DOA5 was a step down as is DOA6 and let's not talk about NG3: RE.

So, Devil's Third is a stinker. I get that. But Itagaki leaving had a significant impact on their games and as the former head of Team Ninja and creator of Ninja Gaiden, I think it's understandable that gamers are excited to see him make a return. Wether it'll be through an XGS studio, XGS published game or simply new multiplat doesn't matter to me.

He didn’t work on Ninja Gaiden 3, no? Wasn’t that also the first of the series to premiere on the PlayStation as well?

Its the best game they have made since the first Ninja Gaiden. Which really was my only point. Its not a question of whether they weren't better with Itagaki its just that if you ignored Nioh you ignored one of the best games they have ever made.

We can't pretend Ninja Gaiden 2 wasn't a step backwards though

Of the mid sized studios, I'll say Asobo. Their game was well received on Game Pass, they have some proprietary tech (not just relying solely on 3rd party tech), are using ML for Flight Sim...and generally have some of the highest upside of the free agents in the industry.

With that said, I think something bigger is coming. It feels right that one big splash will be getting announced soon.
