Xbox Rumors and Speculation

It sounds like something's going on with LO, how he says the first and jumped to Mizoguchi and Tetris. It might be nothing, but I like that people keep asking for it directly in interviews. I love that Fable is coming back, but I would flip the fk out if LO became a franchise.

I'd be right there with you losing my s*** if LO became a franchise.

I honestly don't think this guy is legit. He's good at piecing stuff from others and taking credit for educated guesses off of them. Someone who's been legit did mention Microsoft has their biggest 2nd party budget by far. This was before Klobrille mentioned the open world game. It would make logically make sense. Netflix spent 17 billion on content this year. Microsoft needed to build up 1st party because they want to have more control over more games in their pipeline. Now that they have 23 studios, 2nd party can fill the gaps and it's not a risk since they aren't relying on them. Also Microsoft already pays 3rd party devs to release games into Game Pass day 1. May as well take that 1 step further and publish a lot of them. This will be a way for Microsoft to establish new relationships and find out if other up and coming studios are worth purchasing in the future. E3 2021 (or whatever takes it's place) should be wild.

The way the world is looking lets shoot for E3 2022 for in person presentations. I feel like in 2021 we're still going to be doing virtual presentations.

Not sure you can really add Bethesda anymore seeing as they may still put games on PS5. Thats just f***ing stupid...
I agree. The communication has been terrible for a pretty straightforward thing, if you want people to game on Xbox and Game Pass.

This "that's not what we're about"- mentality, is going to bite them in the ass with gamers. The other competitors in the game or warming up on the sideline won't think twice or quite as complicated. Best to rip the bandaid off quick then to play around poking at the wound.

What? No...they still count. On Game Pass. Building their games around Xbox hardware. Whether they ever get ported later is irrelevant.

Phil already said it’s illegal to discuss until the deal is done in 2021.

Yeah you're not getting a straight answer because even if they wanted to give one, they can't right now. An answer to speak towards games being exclusive before they actually own the studio could cause issues in closing the deal. Microsoft is a highly scrutinized and regulated tech company. Going outside the lines before the deal is done will cause issues.

There's other factors too...like they honestly don't know how fast the industry trends in the next five years. Hardware is converging and they have a lot of parternships. The lines are going to blur between PC and other devices. Entire landscape of tech could look extremely different by the time Elder Scrolls releases in 2025.

Finally, I expect their next MMO to be on PS5. A game like that benefits from as many players as possible. So adding that to existing deals, there's your case by case basis right there.

I don't believe Starfield, Prey 2 or Wolf 3 comes to PS5 in 2021/2022 when those games release.

Exactly. MS is trying to get this deal pass the regulators. They're going to do and say everything they think is in the best interest of getting the deal approved. Once they own them though, I expect Elder Scrolls, New Doom and Starfield to be exclusive to Xbox/PC.

Yep. This is what I expect. That said, most gamers still have mindsets locked into the traditional console wars...but does it really matter? Game Pass is the exclusive. In 2022/2023 when there's a AAA game every month or two along with smaller games releasing day 1, gaming enthusiasts will need Game Pass. Sure, if some Bethesda games came to PS5, there would be a loophole. Gamers could spend $1000's more on games over the course of a generation in order to avoid spending a few hundred dollars on a piece of plastic Microsoft loses money on therefore improving the balance sheet for Microsoft to buy more studios and make more games subscription exclusive. I think Nadella, Hood and Spencer would accept that drawback. Then again, why even dedicate resources towards PS5 development when all those resources could go towards developing games on hardware where the full Xbox ecosystem can exist? Maybe a game like Starfield, which is late in development, could get a port later on....or most likely they eat the dev cost and move on in order to avoid setting expectations they won't sustain.

I don't expect Microsoft to be too worried about PS5 either way but the plastic wars are transitioning to the subscription/service wars with how the industry and tech is changing. In a few years, even gamers in rural areas will be able to stream Game Pass at under 20ms using a PS4 or PS5 controller. PC tech is converging with portable devices. It won't be too long (5 to 10 years) where most AAA games will be able to scale to tablet tech because Moore's Law is slowing down. That will make tablets viable for entry level PC gaming. Game Pass Ultimate is the exclusive. The rest are accessories to their strategy.

Yeah it really doesn't matter.
It matters. Microsoft giving Bethesda games over to Sony is the opposite of what they need this generation. They'll lose many sells and many subs because they need to sway Sony and Ninty gamers over. Why do that if all they want is to be a 3rd party publisher. Bad plan in my opinion,.

If they keep them exclusive I could definitely see 20 million PS gamers at least buying Xbox as a secondary console mid gen when the X costs about $300 and taking out GP subs with all the great games that will be on offer. That could equate to around an extra $2.5 Billion in extra revenue per year. Much more than they’d get by allowing ES and Starfield on PS5.

You know what, you're right. You should be head of Xbox, or better yet MS CEO. Amazing that you know so well what MS needs but these people who actually are part of the industry don't. What a time to be alive.

Well..Xbox would be in an even better position if they'd acted on what their longtime customers wanted. Game Pass or not.

And in this instance their long term customers want...what? Exclusive games so they can win the console warz?

Exclusive games period, like they've been asking for 13 years. What does Xbox lack? Big exclusives. That next Xbox game that can become the next Gears, Mass Effect or Halo. The next event franchise that you would line up for like Halo 2's midnight launch. We want that on Xbox rather sooner than later and Zenimax could deliver. Longtime customers are hungry.

We're going to see this gen if exclusives still matter. I think it's too early to say it doesn't considering most gamers pick where they game based on known exclusive franchises.

That's unrealistic in this day and digital delivery age. No one is going to go line up for any game nowadays when they can just download from the comfort of their home.

Couch? f*** you! If people can't trigger the download while taking a big Ouya on the toilet what did we even come down from the trees for?

Stahp, foo!

Its a bad impression on the brand to STILL put games on the PS5 when they have more than enough games in their 1st party stable on their own. It also weakens the brand. If Bethesda games are still going to come out on the PS5, what reason do Sony gamers have to come over to Xbox? If anything, its a clear message to stay on PS5 until the games from Bethesda come over; at some point they will. That totally defeats the $7.5 billion dollar investment.
Lets not even mention that if Bethesda games go over to PS5, people are going to hound that MS is going 3rd party until the cows come home. Eventually they'll rant for Halo, Gears and every other 1st party title to hit the competition's console. Phil and Matt can deny any other 1st party titles are coming over to the competition all they want. NO ONE will believe it.

As I said, it weakens the brand considerably.

How do the shareholders feel about it?
