EA Sports UFC runs at 30 FPS, 1080p because there's "little discernible benefit" to 60 FPS

EA Sports UFC won't run at 60 frames a second on Xbox One and PS4 because there's "little discernible benefit", according to EA Canada's creative director Brian Hayes.

"UFC is running at 1080p," he told Gaming Bolt in an interview. "The game sim is running at 60 FPS, but rendering at 30 FPS with motion blur.

"From prior experience working on Fight Night Round 4 and Fight Night Champion, which rendered at 60 and 30 FPS respectively, we discovered that 60 FPS didn't have a hugely beneficial impact on gameplay, but motion blur had an enormous impact on visual quality," Hayes continued.

"In fact, when we focus tested the two, the majority of people preferred the 30FPS experience with motion blur. So, as opposed to arbitrarily jumping back to 60 FPS for little discernible benefit, we decided to put those resources towards improving the visual presentation of the game in other ways."

Trade-offs between frame rate and other aspects of the experience are generally determined by the kind of game you're making. An arcade fighter like Killer Instinct needs a fast, consistent frame rate, in order to ensure a fair contest - "the fighting game community demands it," Double Helix design director David Verfaillie told us during our extensive hands-on.

On the other hand, a realistic physics-based sim like UFC is presumably workable in 30 frames a second, because the combatants aren't capable of landing hundreds of hits in under a minute.

Tell me about it! Anytime I see that a game is only running 720 or 30 FPS instantly 50% of the fun I could have had with the game is lost...

It is terrible that we're still getting 30 fps games on next gen consoles.

Tell me about it. I mean, I feel like all the money I wasted in the 8 and 16 bit days was flushed down the toilet because the games looked like crap, and all they had to offer as an excuse was a heck of a lot of fun.

Does a UFC game really need to be 60 fps? they are doing a lot with this game when it comes to characters not clipping etc and the models look really nice so I'd rather have that than 60 fps in a slower paced fighting game.

Fun fact: There were more games in the 8/16 bit days that were 60fps than PS3/360. So really...you had MORE fun!

Yeah, but none were in 1080p, so it was all a lie.

The comparison is r******d to begin with. We are in 2013 not 1990. It obviously wasn't as possible back then to do certain things.

So your telling me my whole childhood was a lie... :(

Not all of it. That time you crapped your pants? That most certainly wasn't a lie. But all those hours you burned on Zelda, or Super Mario, or Sonic, or Metroid? Oh, yeah, that was a lie - it wasn't 1080p/60fps, so it was simply no fun.

You really should just get a PC if you're seriously expecting all games to be 60fps. You're going to be very disappointed; welcome to the world of programmable shaders!

I guess I just expect a little more out of $400-$500 game consoles. I'd rather they toned down the resolution and kept the FPS high. To me, 720p at 60 fps is a lot better than higher res at 30 fps.

I don't mean to barge in on all the fond memories, but am I the only one who is really excited for this game? EA MMA was such a fun game, better than undisputed in my mind. I hope it lives up to the hype!

Now back to my memories of playing super mario karts and eating animal crackers :)

Wow. 30fps for a game that only has to render the characters. What a joke.

I'm seeing what you're saying, but on the other hand I'm not sure MMA really needs 60fps.

*runs into the distance*

I entirely agree. Not sure why anyone, other than people who had no interest in the game to begin with, would care about this.

The only ufc game I've played was the one on the Dreamcast and it was an amazing game. If this one is as good as that one then I'm sold. I'll enjoy spanking my gf, we always watch ufc together. =D

I'm actually not surprised. This is typical EA. Despite FIFA, NHL and Madden (and the new NBA Live) having lots more players on field the games run at 60 fps. Lots of effort and budget given.

But for low key sports like Nascar, Golf, their boxing games and the new UFC game. Lower budgets, less effort, 30 fps. I can understand Nascar with a million cars all at the same time (and aside from Burnout, EA has never had racing games over 30 fps), but golf, boxing and UFC are basically just a few players at a time.

Yes, definitely. The reason 60fps isn't the priority that it should be is because then they wouldn't be able to push the visuals quite as far. And you know how people are... if the graphics aren't amazing than the game is gatbage. I'd rather have next gen games that look only somewhat better than current console games and run at 60fps than software that looks leaps & bounds better but runs at the same old unremarkable 30fps.
