"The decisions to retire older EA games are never easy," reads an update onEA's website. "The development teams and operational staff pour their hearts into these games almost as much as the customers playing them and it is hard to see one retired. But as games get replaced with newer titles, the number of players still enjoying the older games dwindles to a level -- typically fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles -- where it’s no longer feasible to continue the behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these games up and running."

Booo!

Wow, I've played almost 0 of these games. Only game I played here was Battlefront II on PS2. Great game.

Some people are completely suckers for playing old games. I remembered very clearly when people still played Halo 2 online; we all cried so bad when MS has decided to pull the plug. It was a very sad day for us, lol. So I can totally feel for some players who still play online, even though, yes, they're very old.

BF 1942 will be my most missed from the list, though I haven't played it since BF3. Nearly twelve years was a good run.

I'll cry whenever Gears of War 1 and Gears of War 2 go offline. I keep coming back for a stint here and there because i love the games. It always shocks me to see people online after so many years even if there's only a few thousand playing. They better remake those games or just offer them through the cloud or something. Long live the classics!

I am surprised to see Battlefield 2 on the list. There are still a lot of populated servers, including servers for BF2 mods like Project Reality.

Lots of Nintendo DS games... and lol@Bulletstorm on ps3.

this is also of a concern for me.. since when do executives sell off all of their stock in their own company

As EA's share price climbs, key execs sell all stock

Two senior members of EA's executive circle have sold all their stock in the company, new financial statements have disclosed, while its COO has halved his interest.

Well, when people sell it means someone is buying. It looks like some group is moving to take a controlling interest at a senior level by buying these people out.

UPDATE:

In an EA blog post, the publisher has stressed that it is "still investigating" solutions to keep certain fan favourites online, in the face of "significant technical hurdles." "We know some of these games are still fan favorites, including Battlefield 2, Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Command & Conquer games," reads the post. "We are still investigating community-supported options to preserve online functionality for these titles, such as multiplayer. Significant technical hurdles remain, and at this time we don’t have anything to announce."

  • Crysis 2 for PC
Bulletstorm, already? LOL. I guess there must be NOBODY playing that game. I must say, I am surprised by Crysis 2 getting the ax.

Crysis 2 was the one that really caught my eye. Only three years old and blamo it's gone. Really telling what these clowns could do to other games just to get you to buy the newest one.

BF 1942 is being saved by gameranger and I am sure there are a few others that are being saved as well.

This doesn't have that much to do with EA as it has to do with GameSpy closing it's doors and all of those games used Gamespy master servers.

With GameSpy multiplayer shutting down at the end of this month, hundreds of games are being affected, including quite a few titles from Capcom. First off, Lost Planet 3 for PC and PlayStation 3 will have a server migration, which has already begun, according to the company. However, the switch will reset the leaderboards and player stats for these two versions, while the Xbox 360 edition is unaffected by the changes.

All versions of Age of Booty and Flock, however, will see online integration go away with the GameSpy shutdown May 31. Capcom notes that players can still enjoy Age of Booty offline or with other people via LAN. As for Flock, the level editor sharing function will no longer be active after this month. Finally, to finish with some good news, Street Fighter III: Third Strike -- Online Edition and Marvel vs. Capcom Origins have already had service migrations and there aren't any issues. Players can keep enjoying these games online.

Wow, looks like EA is not the only one. Capcom is experiencing the shutdown too. Glad to see that Street Fighter III is still up and running.
