Far Cry 6

Likely a day one buy for me. Big fan of Far Cry even though I felt FC5 was a bit of a stumble and New Dawn was the faceplant that resulted. I'm hoping 6 can be a bit of a course correction.

I love Far Cry but like AC, the formula is getting stale. The latest AC game at least refined the melee combat and such, but Far Cry has been the exact same game since 3. Granted, it is a fun formula, but still very much the same.

Agree, now it is just changing the setting and tweaking the villain and gameplay elements each time. They really need to add something innovative.

I guess it depends on how big of changes one expects between iterations. Far Cry 3 was certainly quite a departure from what they'd done with FC2, and FC3 was a big success for them so they've stuck to that formula. I do think they need to make larger scale improvements before running it into the ground like they did with AC around the release of Unity. At the same time if they move too far away then people will complain they changed too much. It's always a hard path to balance on because you've got advocates for both sides. I feel like theres been more changes to the FC formula in the past 4 games than there were with AC from 1-revelations, but for some that isn't enough. I dunno, I'm not fatigued just yet on the series as a whole, I just kinda don't like some specific systems & mechanical changes they make, but can over look those due to enjoying the overall.

I'll have to see what sort of new things they're doing with this game to see what I think about it and if I feel it's getting stale even for me.

I agree. However given how well these games sell, Ubisoft has zero incentive to change up the formula.

A prequel to Farcry 3 huh? The little boy with the scar on his right eyebrow is definitely young Vaas.

I've finished every fc since 2. My favorites have been 3 and primal in hindsight. I hope they revolutionize fc like they did ac and make it fresh again.

And if / when they do, I hope they do it before Far Cry experiences it's own "AC: UNITY" moment. They need to pre-emptively give the series a refresh and surprise everyone, rather than re-actively doing it to try to win people back after a big misstep. FC6 clearly isn't going to be doing that, but I think the success of FC5 may have emboldened them to continue doing what they'd been doing a little longer. Maybe if 6 doesn't do as well as 5 did they'll recognize that the formula is getting old and in need of some larger scale changes.

Something I'm kind of just realizing now is that with Toronto being the lead studio on this one, maybe Montreal is already busy making the next one, giving them a few years to work on something with more substantial changes....

We didn't see it in anything shown so far, but they better still have bows & arrows in this game, haha. Love to clear outposts with nothing but arrows & takedowns.
Me too. I think it has to do with it taking more skill and thought. I hope they bring back takedowns. I missed them in FC5.

I'm pretty bored of the "Viva Revolucion" theme in so many games.

Even though I'm pretty burnt out on the series, I've always liked far crys soundtracks and 5 was probably the best yet.

FC5 still had takedowns. It had fewer, as they removed vehicle and grenade takedowns, and we didn't have any bladed melee weapons with which to perform them, but the system was still there. I do hope they redeem themselves and bring back stabby weapons as well as those 2 takedown types in addition to adding a few more though.

And I agree about the revolution / oppressed usurping the oppressor theme having more than run it's course, they need to find a new premise to base the conflict on. I like the base set up of being an unprepared and inexperienced person thrust into a fight or die situation, but there's a lot of other ways that core set up could take form

What about a shovel that you can throw like you're a super soldier javelinist?

Ha, well, I'm sure shovels would still be around in a fictionalized version of Cuba. Originally FC5 was going to include pitchforks as a melee weapon as well, so maybe they could bring those back! I just want to be able to have a knife or machete again, taking those away in 5 was lame AF...

Best weapon in the game. I think they even had a shovel launcher, but I wouldn't use that.

Ha, yeah they added a shovel launcher after seeing people goofing around with shovels. I liked them the most if only because they were the only melee weapon that functioned even slightly differently than the rest of them. All the bats, pipes, oars and sticks were essentially just skins of the same thing, but shovels were actually thrown like spears whereas everything else functioned the same as throwing a bat or stick, plus shovels impaled enemies, and I just love all weapons that impale your foes, it's why I love bows and arrows so much, haha.

The takedowns were way reduced from 4. I loved chaining them together

Chain takedowns were still in though, they only removed the 2 I mentioned, vehicle & grenade takedowns. They slightly altered some, sometimes for the worse (instead of a knife throw takedown you threw one of your melee weapons, so you'd just fling a baseball bat and take someone out, looked kinda lame) but sometimes for the better (side arm takedowns used your own equipped sidearm so you could use fully auto machine pistols or even the grenade launcher, The takedown itself also worked better, being able to shoot at enemies behind and to the side of you rather than only in front of you.)

It's been a while but I remember being very disappointed in the takedowns. I think I heard they did more with that post apocalyptic one, but I definitely remember them stripping them down. Maybe the knife ones because I used those a lot in 4.

Yeah there were NO knife takedowns in FC5, that was the worst thing about it. All the takedowns were either unarmed or with the melee weapons and all the melee weapon takedowns used the same animation pool, so takedowns with pipes where the same as takedowns with the shovel etc... Really disappointing to see them sort of backpedal on takedowns as they're literally my favorite aspect of the games. I do think that the death from above takedown was improved as well though, or maybe I just figured out how to initiate them more consistently, but they worked a lot more often for me in FC5 as opposed to 4, but I'd love to see FC6 really double down on takedowns.

It'd be awesome to have takedowns specific to every weapon type where if you're within range and you aim at the enemy before starting it you get a weapon takedown. Shotgun, bow, pistol, hell even rocket launcher takedowns could be hilarious. The other takedown type I think would be cool is a sliding takedown, so if you do the slide to crouch and you're sliding while you get within takedown range of an enemy you can do that one, those could be fun.

Looks like far cry 6 has some very interesting home made guns.

i enjoyed far cry 5. but after the XX enemy base or whatever they were call, I get tired and do the minimal to get to the next stage.

also the game get really easy once you realized the Machine guns do pretty much everything better than other weapon. High damage, pretty much no need reload, good at near and mid range. Just have a sniper for long range and you are set.

So excited for this game. Hope this one has an actual good ending, unlike whatever filth they tried to push on us at the end of Far Cry 5.

I'm looking forward to this as well, I never played the series before the current gen consoles came out but I've loved every one of the games I've played so far.
