Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was released in November to mostly positive reviews and strong sales numbers, but the game's success was not always a sure thing. Game director Stig Asmussen said in a new interview that Lucasfilm--which controls the Star Wars franchise--was originally resistant to Asmussen's pitch for the game.

In early meetings, the Lucasfilm team suggested that Respawn go a different direction and make a game using blasters instead of Lightsabers. The reason being was that Lucasfilm is very protective of Jedi in particular, Asmussen said.

"They weren't super comfortable with the idea," Asmussen said of his initial pitch for a melee-focused action game on the AIAS Game Maker's podcast. "I pitched, 'Hey what if we do a game about Jedi and Force powers, and they were not super comfortable with that. They threw it back and said, 'What about blasters and bounty hunters?' That's not the background of the team we've built; you might as well ask me and us to start building a racing game at this point. I don't think anybody's going to be happy with the results of that.

"What I came to learn is for them, Jedi is the Holy Grail. To make a game about Jedi, you gotta earn it. There was a little bit of a back and forth but they could see where I was coming from."

Later in the interview, Asmussen mentioned that Respawn and Lucasfilm had numerous "fights" about creative decisions regarding Jedi Fallen Order. He said he understands Lucasfilm's position being the rights-owner of the Star Wars series. He also said recalled that Lucasfilm came back to him with a "hard no" on several different ideas. He said his team at Respawn became frustrated at times, but again, Asmussen said he understood that Lucasfilm has final say being the owner and controller of the Star Wars franchise.

if this kind of control stops them from making vader shoot lightning, keep it up

I'm gonna say it. the force unleashed 1 & 2 sucked ass and were everything wrong with the old EU.

I'm so brave.

Gotta wonder how well that "blasters/bounty hunter" game lucasfilm tried for would've gone though.

In many ways, the force unleashed games are better than Fallen order;
Better controls, lots of different power to get and level up etc
Fallen order do look awesome though and the metroidvania progression works great.
Respawn should focus on the fighting controls, get rid of the terrible sliding down gameplay (just make it a cutscene or animation instead of us controlling it) and throw in force power unlocks and leveling like the force unleashed imo

Combat and navigation could both use a fair bit of work imo. I like the structure of combat, with timing blocks and all that, I just think they need to at least double the amount of attack animations in it and give us more mobility options. The navigational element could be better as well, though it's strange they animated more ways to squeeze through a narrow passage than they did ways to finish an enemy (and FFS disney, let them have dismembermet on storm troopers).... Also need to improve upon use of force powers and make them more fun to use...

Lucasfilms has to be strict now unlike during the force unleashed games time frame is because anything established in the star wars games, movies, or books is consider canon. Force unleashed was not considered canon at the time but a part of the expanded universe.

Interesting, didn't know this, explains a lot.

I thought it was, at that time, it even go out Lucas’s blessings. But when Disney bought Lucasfilm/ILM then did it become non canonical and considered “extended universe”

Now star killer is a base and Vader’s lackeys are the inquisitors

Though it’s no longer canon, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed still stands out as a groundbreaking piece of storytelling which ushered in a new age of emotional and character driven stories in the galaxy far, far away. The Force Unleashed arguably opened the door for the acceptance of The Clone Wars–which would debut a mere month later–and Star Wars Rebels.

...

The ending which–for a while–was considered canon, though, was the one that saw you follow the Light Side; though you gained a sort of redemption, Starkiller died, becoming a martyr for the Rebellion cause.

The Force Unleashed did something that in 2008 was completely radical: it explored the galaxy in the time between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

Yeah, you are right at the time it was canon. I liked both games.
