I am hoping the battle system will be more like FF7 remake, I enjoyed that.

I think the Warriors of Light have grown up in their own worlds, so I want to create a world of Final Fantasy that those who know the good and bad of reality can also be passionate about. I believe there are certain hardships that are experienced when becoming an adult, so I want to make the main theme of this game something that those who grew up playing Final Fantasy and understand reality can still enjoy, get something out of, and think about."
 
FFXVI Main Scenario Complete, English Voice Recording Nearly Finished; Might not make TGS 2021


During Final Fantasy XIV‘s 14-hour special broadcast, Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida shared some sparse details on the upcoming and as of now elusive RPG. The game’s main scenario writing has been completed and the team is working its way through the final English voice recording phase – development is going well but it’s difficult because they want to maintain high quality.

As they don’t want to drip-feed information, the next time they do have content to reveal, they want to make sure to convince people to get the game as soon as they see it so they’re still polishing for the re-reveal. Unfortunately, that means Final Fantasy XVI might skip Tokyo Game Show this year despite Yoshida’s desire to show something there, but the team is trying to get it into a playable state by then regardless. That said, it was never going to be at E3.

The game remains in development for PlayStation 5.

Elsewhere in the live streamed event, Yoshida said that work on Final Fantasy 16’s scenario was now complete, and that its audio voice recording was also nearly finished.

“Development is going well,” he said. “It’s quite difficult to make sure the quality is amazing. We want the next announcement to be something where everyone says, ‘I’m going to buy this game!’ This, we are putting a lot of effort to make sure the quality is great.”

I’ll wait for the Chibi abridged version on GP….unless it’s something revolutionary for a FF game. Their other game has my peak interest over this though
 



Final Fantasy 16’s producer provided a small development update during a Tokyo Game Show stream this weekend, and claimed that Square Enix was currently putting the final touches on the PS5 RPG.


Speaking during a TGS live stream on Saturday, Naoki Yoshida reiterated that Final Fantasy 16’s main design is complete and claimed that the development team is currently finalising the remaining side quests set to appear in the game.

Yoshida said that the game’s character models are also nearly finished and that there are only a few quality improvements left to be done on the game.

The Square Enix producer previously said that the company wanted to show FF16 at TGS, but the game’s development team wasn’t able to make the deadline.

Final Fantasy 16 is yet to be given an official release date. However, Square Enix has suggested that the game’s development is at an advanced state since its announcement a year ago.

In October 2020, Final Fantasy 16’s recruitment page stated: “We have already completed basic development and scenario production, and are continuing to create large-scale resources and build boss battles while expanding our various development tools.”

Square Enix officially announced the new Final Fantasy instalment during a PS5 showcase in September 2020.

While no release timing was confirmed, the reveal featured almost four minutes of footage from various aspects of the title, suggesting it was significantly into development.

Final Fantasy 16 is being directed by Hiroshi Takai, the designer who performed the same role for Final Fantasy XIV and The Last Remnant.

“Though we’re pouring our hearts and souls into this project each and every day, it may still be some time before we can get it into your hands”, he said in September. “However, I promise it will be worth the wait!”

Final Fantasy 16’s reveal trailer originally referenced a PC release, although this was eventually removed. Asked to clarify the situation, Square Enix later said: “We have no further information on if FF16 will be released on platforms other than the PS5.”

Greetings everyone,
When last we spoke, I promised I would have more information on Final Fantasy XVIsometime later in 2021, However, I regret to inform you that I will be unable to keep that promise as complications stemming from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic have delayed the game’s development by almost a half year.
In an effort to offset the effects of COVID-19, we’ve had to decentralize that workforce by permitting staff to tackle their assignments from home. This has unfortunately hampered communication from the Tokyo office, which, in turn, has led to delays in—or in extreme cases, cancellations of—asset deliveries from our outsource partners.
That said, we have spent much of 2021 addressing this issue, and hope to see its impact to a minimum by the new year, allowing us to better focus on the tasks at hand: increasing graphic resource quality, refining combat mechanics, fleshing out individual battles, putting the finishing touches on cutscenes, and conducting overall graphical optimization. Our primary goal now is to be as hands on with the game as possible in order to see it fully polished.
So that leaves us with the question, when can we expect the next round of information? Well, I am happy to announce the current plan is to conduct our next big reveal in spring of 2022 as we seek to build excitement leading up to the game’s eventual release.
I deeply apologize to all those who have been looking forward to learning more about Final Fantasy XVI, and thank you for your continued patience while we focus our combined efforts on development.

F16 producer Yoshida featured in Uniqlo's magazine this month with the release of the FF 35th anniversary T-shirts. Here's what he said near the end of the interview about 16:

Right now the development of FF16 is in its final stage. As a single player game, we are aiming to integrate story and gameplay even further. Different to a game where many people play online at the same time, the extent to which the game has an individual focus changes how immersed you are in the story. I think it's become a story with quite a lot of depth. To people who have grown up, entered working society and think "reality isn't as easy-going as a video game", and at some point ended up separating from Final Fantasy, we want to want them to remember their passion from back then. We're making the game with that intention.
 
Looking forward to this. Historically never been a big fan of FF games. I've beaten 13-1 and 15, but played bits of 6, 7, 8, and 13-2. I really enjoyed FF15 though and although I do enjoy the old school turn based JRPG, I think the new style of combat suites me better now.

I just hope its feature complete. FF 15 was DLC piecemeal-ed to death.
 
So re-watching the trailer again, it looks like they are going the Attack on Titan route kind of story?

There are different people (users) in this world who can control guardians and it looks like we (the gamers) are in control of Ifrit's user and the awakening of his powers?
 


Listing the main aims for the project, Yoshida said: "I want a story of a hero who saves the world, because this is Final Fantasy. I want a summon to go wild and destroy the map. I want to release this game as soon as possible. I cannot release this game in parts.

"When considering these four main points, I believe it is practically impossible to ask for everything. If we had a development period of about 15 years, we may have had the opportunity of challenging ourselves with an open world [smiles]. After all, it's almost impossible in terms of time and cost to create a global story within an open world.

Speaking in the latest issue of Famitsu, translated for VGC by contributor Robert Sephazon, the developer said that the team had to reassess the audience Final Fantasy was appealing to:

I'm from a generation that grew up with command and turn-based RPGs. I think I understand how interesting and immersive it can be. On the other hand, for the past decade or so, I've seen quite a number of opinions saying 'I don't understand the attraction of selecting commands in video games'.

This opinion is only increasing, particularly with younger audiences who do not typically play RPGs.

Yoshida went on to explain that he believes the evolution in console technology has pushed RPGs towards action-based mechanics rather than turn-based:

For several console generations now, all character expressions can be done in real-time. Actions such as 'press the trigger and your character will shoot a gun' and 'press the button and your character will swing their sword' can now be easily expressed without going through a command system. This is not an argument of what is good or bad, but there is a difference based on the player's preferences and age. Furthermore, there is a big difference between a command system and a turn-based system, and these are often conflated, but are two different concepts. RPGs originated with tabletop RPGs, and I think that gaming RPGs were invented by replacing the tabletop discussions with commands in video games.
 
In my advancing age, I begrudgingly have to agree with him on the turn based stuff. When I was younger, it wasn't anything to sit through a 60 hour turn based experience. But now.... I can't do it nearly as often. Persona 5 and Dragon Quest 11 stretched the limits of how much turn based game-play I can handle. Action RPGs are slowing becoming my preferences in JRPGs.
