Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy - Rebirth February 29, 2024.

Don't know if any of you guys finished the Yuffie DLC yet but that ending cutscene shows

that Part 2 may just start right at Kalm. Does this mean Square Enix is not going to let you go free roam around? They might just keep the whole linear experience thing and move you from place to place using cutscenes.

Maybe they'll sell a DLC / chapter at some point just having overworld open battles. Maybe an overworld chapter as the main title and chocobo riding / breeding are the DLC?

Doubt it. Doesn't really make sense to do it that way. The point of open world is to let you do whatever you want in the order you want during the game.

I was being facetious somewhat (if we were talking some developers though I could see that being something they actually would do). I'm not actually sure that an open / overworld thing particularly would work here since it's not just one game any more, so if you decide you want to backtrack to Nibelheim or Shinra HQ, and that's not in the game that you're currently playing, I'm not sure how they'd implement it.

Yeah exactly. That's why I think they are just going to stick with the linear experience like part 1, which I am okay with as long as they flesh out each different part and it's like a whole new experience while yet feeling somewhat familiar. That's all I really ask for this in this particular remake.

The Yuffie DLC already added to my experience for this title because I got to see the whole situation unfold in her eyes and we got some extra tidbits and references from other characters in the world of FF7 (like Weiss) which was a nice touch.

This game is awesome, very linear but there is some light exploration. For me the battle system and story is where its at and why I'm loving this game so much. Combat not as easy as I thought it would be, I had thought it would be like FF15 where combat was flashy but super easy with the player mainly using one button to fight. But in FF7 you have to manage so much with your party, I also like that the Summons ability allows the player to cast its abilities while its doing its thing on the battlefield. The one fire Demon I have right now is really powerful and fun to watch.

My one complaint is with aggro, the enemies seem to only focus on the character I'm using. It doesn't matter who I switch to the enemies always seems to focus on me and its kind of annoying. There are times I need some space to effectively execute some commands but I get swarmed by enemies so often that it makes it difficult. Its a small thing compared to everything else this game gets right.

There is like no loading in this game. Boot it up and you're playing within seconds. I love this SSD sh!t..

I assume this is free for us FFVII Remake owners as it's mostly just a patch for performance/graphics and an added chapter?

I think the PS5 visual & performance enhancements are free but you have to purchase the new DLC separately.

Oh, ok cool. Thank you! I am almost at the last boss from back when I played on my PS4 Pro. So I will do the last mission in PS5 glory!

Yeah the enemies focus on who you are controlling so that kind of pushes you to keep changing to a different character, execute some commands and switch again.

I haven't had much issues though from just controlling Cloud mainly.

It's not a patch. It's a native download for the next gen version.

You need to upload your latest PS4 save in the game title screen menu in the PS4 version first.

Download the free PS5 update version, there's an option in the game title screen menu to download that PS4 save you just uploaded. You can rinse and repeat as many save files as you want like this if you want.

The Yuffie DLC is 2 chapters and costs $19.99 USD and it would be a 8-9GB separate download that you can then access in game.

Why Square Enix did the game save file transfer like this, I have no clue.

Well, yeah. It's the exact same game, just optimized for our PS5.

Well if this is true, then I am screwed. I don't have my PS4 anymore. I assumed it was in the cloud like the rest of my games have had their saves in the cloud.

Thank you for the Yuffie info!

Yeah but it's not a patch. It's literally downloading the entire game again but it's the PS5 version lol.

If you still have the PS4 cloud save, you can download the PS4 FF7 remake version first, then download the PS4 cloud save file to your PS5. Open the PS4 game to the title screen and you should be able to upload to Square Enix's cloud that way.

Ahhh, that's good advice thanks. I do switch to different team members but I think my mistake is sticking to any one team member for too long during combat encounters which allows the enemies to refocus on who I'm in control of. Also, found that I really need to use consumables more and not try hoarding potions when there's plenty of vending machines to replenish from.

Cloud is my favorite but I'm becoming a big fan of Tifa and her lightning fast hand to hand combat techniques. Barret is also a must to deal with turrets but his abilities are a bit underwhelming. I hope he gets some unlocks to make his attacks a bit more flashy like Cloud and Tifa where their attacks literally light up the screen.

A little off topic but when I saw the reveal for the Guardians of the Galaxy game I had hoped that it would be similar to this game and let us be in control of the whole team. A bit disappointed that we can only issue commands but only have direct control of Starlord. But I guess Square has other plans for that game.

My favourite line up is still Cloud, Tifa and Aerith. Once you get Regen+Magnify mastered along with healing carcanet item(sp?) that boosts healing abilities/items will help a lot since you can cast it once to all party members during fight and it will will regen hp for each person throughout each fight you cast it 👍

Uhhhhhh, I tried three times and three times got my butt kicked by Hell House in the Colosseum. I got real close on the third try because that's when I finally noticed it changing elements which require different spells to deal significant damage. I think I'll be able to destroy it tonight, this boss feels like a skill check which is fine. Aerith's Arkane Ward spell has become a favorite, being able to cast a spell twice at not additional cost of MP is really useful.

One thing I really wish this game had was the ability to create and save loadouts, specifically for materia which needs to be changed more often than I originally thought. It would have been a nice quality of life option so we don't have to spend so much time in the menus tweaking builds.

Yeah Hell House was a big boss. Just keep attacking it with the weak spells whenever you can as it changes elements and stay away from it and heal when it goes into God Mode. Rinse and repeat.

I took it down without breaking a sweat. Once I knew its mechanics it was easy. I love it when a boss seems impossible until you learn and adapt. The other fight against the Fire Bomb twins was annoying me until I realized they primarily do fire damage. And once I reslotted fire materia & elemental materia in a linked slot they hardly did any damage to me.

I love how open and flexible the combat is for this game. I really hope Mass Effect brings back squad commands. Are there any other RPGs that have a similar battle system to FF7 Remake out there?

Not that I can think of. This new hybrid battle system seems to be a first for JRPG's from my experience.

The Tales of games also has a similar kind of battle system where you run around and fight and can execute commands for allies but there's no materia and I don't remember if you can play as an ally.

From what I remember of the demo for Scarlet Nexus the player can have allies execute attacks but we won't be able to control them, right? Tales of Arise looks really good. My only issue with it is that I think it comes out in mid September which will be a crowded gaming time.

After what Square has done with this game's battle system. I can't wait to see what they do with FF16.

Scarlet Nexus allows you to borrow an ally's power for attacks but you can't control the ally.

It's fine, I'll find time when Tales of Arise releases so I can beat it quick to maximize re-sell value :)

I have always loved the materia system even from the OG FF7 game, not sure if FF16 will also have a similar materia system but looking forward to that too!

Just completed the story, great game. It took me a little over 45hrs to complete and I still have the DLC. The story was really good and I liked how each of the main characters got their moment to shine. But the real star of the show was the battle system, its easy to understand but there's a lot of depth if you want to go deeper. The Pressure/Stagger system is awesome once I figured out how to take full advantage of it. I thought Cloud would be my go-to for damage but Tifa became my favorite. Her moves set is just to fast for enemies to keep up with and I loved that.

My only complaints are that there was what felt like padding to stretch things out. I'm primarily thinking about the Sewer section which didn't do much to further the story. The other thing is this game is super linear and there's not much to explore since you are funneled down one path constantly. But it drives the narrative so well so I didn't mind it much. I've read that the next game will be open world and I can't wait for that.

Solid 9/10 game for me. :bang:

Please help! I stopped playing this game last year because I got stuck at the Arsenal boss. He is the one that has the 3 drones that you need to take out as well as his rolling feet. I started back up where I left off and still can’t get past it.

I read online that I need to have lightening for Barrett but I don’t have it it seems. So how do I add it? I always die on phase 3 as it seems it intentionally kills off the character I am not using and makes me do it solo.

That was a rough boss fight for me as well. During the cutscene hold the "square" button so you can enter the menu right before the boss fight so you can equip any materia. Give Barret the materia for barrier, pray and any defensive materia you might have like steadfast block. For Aerith equip healing and as many elemental materia as well. There is cover on either side of the map (which will be destroyed in the final phase) and position both characters on either side and attack the drones while strafing in the opposite direction of its attacks.

As soon as the fight starts begin by building Barret's ATB so you can cast lifesaver, steelskin and barrier as soon as possible. Remember that Aerith's Arkane Ward casts an extra spell at no extra ATB cost so if you see health drop put down an Arkane Ward and use cure to heal or have Barret run over to it to cast Prayer to heal the party . Aerith's healing ward summons will also come in handy for party heal but you only get one use in that fight so be mindful of that.

The best abilities to use when not buffing/healing outside normal attacks will be Maximum Fury for Barret and Ray of Judgement from Aerith on the drone that is shielding Arsenal. Save any limit breaks or summons for phase 3. Your best chance for damage will come in phase 2 when its vulnerable to elemental attacks. But after a while it'll become resistant to the element you started with so when that happens switch to a different one. This will be a good opportunity to put Arsenal into the pressured stance and when that happens unload everything you have to try and put it into stagger to deal even more damage.

This is a long and tough battle, don't rush it and take the time to learn its attack patterns. If you stick with it I think you'll destroy it in no time. A word of warning, there's nothing but boss fights in the coming last chapter so the Arsenal fight is a good way to prepare for what's coming. The Rufus & Darkstar boss fight nearly had me quit. I love dogs but Darkstar can got to hell, haha.

Before the fight, you can go into menu and switch the lightning materia from another character to one of Aerith or Barrett. You should be at least be able to cast Thundara at this point (level 2).

Um, there are more bosses bigger than this and that is all that is left?

I don't want to scare you but yes, Chapter 18 is filled with boss fights to bring things to an epic conclusion. I think I counted something like 6 phases with the boss before the final big bad. And then you get to face off against the main man himself SEPHIROTH.

I completed the DLC last night, gameplay counter says 8 hours but the actual content took me about 5 hours. I stretched things out with the challenge missions and got a little hooked on the mini game Fort Condor. I think the new character Yuffie is among the best of the entire cast and I especially like how the women of this series are real powerhouses. Tifa is still my favorite but Yuffie comes close.

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE features dramatically faster loading times on PlayStation 5. Was there a lot of work involved in optimizing the game to load more quickly on PS5's NVME SSD?

Lead Technical Programmer Tomohito Hano:
With PS5 having an SSD, I/O speeds were no longer a bottleneck. Instead, time slicing and CPU load became the causes for longer load times.

Not only have loading screens been minimized, but textures load much faster, too, which is especially evident in the Sector 7 slum area of the game. Can you talk about the work that went into improving those streaming issues using Unreal Engine?

Hano
: In the PlayStation 4 version, we had to forgo using a higher-quality format and high-resolution textures due to memory and disc capacity restrictions. However, we still didn’t have enough disc capacity with FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE to include a high-quality format and high-resolution textures.

And so, we integrated Oodle Texture [Compression], and by using it in combination with Oodle Kraken, we were able to achieve a smaller file size on the PS5 version, even taking the higher resolution textures into account.

Plus, the increased memory compared to PS4 and the improvement of the Non Streamable Mip Map, which ties into the response of the aforementioned question, also helped to load textures.

We were also able to use more high-resolution light maps, which improved the accuracy of the lighting.

Do you have any advice for Unreal Engine developers who are hoping to port their games to next-gen?

Hamaguchi
: Through the development of FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE, I couldn’t help but feel just how versatile Unreal Engine is–since FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE on the PS4 was developed based on UE 4.18, naturally, there wasn’t support for future platforms such as the PS5 at the time. However, all we needed to do was to do a partial merge or implement a few unique items on our end based on the most recent version of UE4, and there was flexibility for expansion even from a slightly older version of UE. Of course, there will be more instances where the native code in UE will need to be amended, so the skills expected from an engineer are still necessary, but I’m hoping that today’s article serves as somewhat of a reference, and helps those who are looking to port their games to next-gen.
