Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy - Rebirth February 29, 2024.

Have to rant here. Beat a tough boss last night (chapter 17 end boos), & thought it was time to hit the bed, only to be forced to fight another boss without the option to save....After an hour, I lost to a BS one-shot attack. Surely there must be an autosave between boss right? No, Reload & the game started before the previous boss that I beaten.....
Frustrated, I made coffee then went to bed.

This morning, I thought I get it over with then returned to work. Holy BS. It took me like 5 tries to beat the boss (that I beat last night but could save game), then spend like an hour to down the next bosses (luckily no death). Then cam long-ass Cutscene. Normally I am okay with cutscenes, but not when I am nervous about the lack of saving. After the long-ass cutscene, was a chase sequence followed by, you guessed it a boss fight!!! Luckily you can restart from last fight. After 3 tries, I finally beat it and able to save. 2hours 10 mins between saves!!! WTF man. Had the game crashed, I could have to throw the controller or break my PS4.
It could be much worst consider the middle boss fight can easily be 45-60min per try.

It was not a fun experience due to the anxiety of losing hours of progress ( & I need to get back to work). I had the same feeling in the game control, where there is a long-ass session without the ability to save, but this is the worst, by a landslide.

Yeah, a save in between would have been better IMO but those were some crazy nice boss fights ;)

Which difficulty are you playing on? I find Normal pretty tough at times even though I consider myself a hardened veteran of the FF games but that's what makes it fun.

I wouldn't mind that much if not for the fact I need to get to bed or work.

I play on normal. The game is certainly on the hard side. Even normal enemies took a while to kill & & will kill you if you are careless. I killed most bosses without retry except the chapter 17 end boss which took me like a few (until I found what I did wrong), but most of the boss battles were longer than I like (many easily over 30min long).

The silver lining is, I had to youtube to see how to beat the chapter 17 boss, only to find out I can scroll left-right on certain spell-like cure-cura-regen-curgra for more effects & power. I have been using the basic spells & heal for 17 chapters not knowing a higher version existed! LOL

Finally best the game. The final chapter they throw the kitchen sink & their mother-in-law at you. Throw in new enemies group with no option to change you setup, let alone save, follow by a boss fight, then more baddies, follow by the final boss. no saving of aurosave.

honestly I don’t know how far they pulled you back if you died, but thankfully I didn’t have to find out. It’s a weird feeling, I barely died in this game, but every fight, and more so boss fights ( all of which are rediculous long, except maybe one or 2) are very sweaty and often on the edge of dying. The most important skill is healing, and 1/4 of all abilty I use are for healing. Most boss fights were more about outlasting them ( by healing) by then being clever or skillful. But I take it.

anyway, a mini review.

Visuals:
the character models of the main characters are as Good as any game in current gen, the hair are one of the best. they could pass up as prerendered CGI models. They are this good.
The character models of npc are a mix bag and many looks like 360 models.

background are overall very high quality, and some areas downright jawdropping. They are many areas that are copy paste though.

Music and sound:
it’s an FF game so the music are great. I am not a music expert so that’s the extend of my feedback

gameplay:
the combat is sweet. its real-time but you can pause to activate command, ( the command will however be executed in real-time) The ability are not just different effect that does same thing but have situational & stretagcal advance and weakness, and knowing which and when to you can make battle smoother.
One minor complain Is that you can be stagger lock & can be very frustrating. The major one would be that Some of the long ass boss fights with phased could use do with a checkpoint. that’s about it for combat

Main quest are typically not bad, but way too many section of long ass corridor that are over stretch & duplicated for extending playtime.

there are somelong ass backtracking, but they ain’t too many to spoil the experience. Side quest are average at best, but a there are a few gems. Some of the side quests are link which is cool.

story:
i think the Story is pretty well done. It’s follow the original but take some liberty on some and add more backstory.

Overall:
solid 8.9/10.

Did you at least know you can pair the healing materia with the multiply (I think that's what irs called) materia in order to heal multiple members at a time?

The saving issues make it sound like this is not the game for me. It’s my biggest pet peeve in gaming. I hated lots of otherwise good games because of terrible save systems

I am on chapter 16 of 18 and the save system has been flawless. The auto save as well as being able to manual save has always been good. I guess I will see how it is for my last 3 chapters.

No problems for me. It even gives you an option to start right before the fight if you die during one.

I want to clarify the save game issue I faced only took place for the final 2 chapters. It has one of the better save systems otherwise, allow you to manual save (multiple save file also) anytime outside fights & return you to where you let off almost always. You can even restart from the last fight (you died) if you forgot to save before dying.

They are in fact checkpoints between bosses during the 3 boss fight combo I mentioned. But you have to make sure you have like 2-3 hours before starting to be safe. When I started the first fight it was already late, so I have to stop. The next day, I thought I can get it done before starting work (thinking the game will save after the 2 boss fight, it did not happen), & it drags until almost lunchtime ( 2.5 hours total playtime). Thankfully I was home office but had to make up lost time in the evening.

Again, this problem I faced was only for the final 2 chapters. I don't want to discourage people to not play the game. That wasn't my intention.

It’s not that bad, but just be prepared to allow 1-2 hours before next save starting ( without spoiling too much) from a boss with a pet.

I didn't get to my first boss yet.
I have Red helping me right now and I am going back and forth between the girls and the guys changing sides. I might have fought a small boss with Red, but maybe it wasn't...not sure. But I am doing ok so far. I keep maxing my full health an manually saving ALL the time to be extra careful.

The best part of the game is them expanding the characters. Everyone is pretty likeable. Although I am not quite sure why every girl is so into Cloud.

Moody twinks with no personality are considered a catch I guess lol. I do find most of the characters likeable except for Aerith, the way she's written is annoying as hell.

So it looks like the PS5 upgrade is free for all the improved upgrades and the Yuffie DLC episode you need to purchase, which is not bad because it means I don't have to repurchase the whole game to play it!

I just have to purchase the DLC. Of course if they added the Yuffie episode for free, it would be even better.
