Hey guys

there has prob been threads like this in the past, but was just thinking yesterday about a few games I used to love playing, mainly online and wondered if you guys had any fond memories.

ok kingpin on PC, they had a online mode I think called bagman, which was like CTF when you fragged someone you could then take their cash and the bag on your back got bigger and bigger with each kill, so you could go back to your base and deposit it, or chance it and get more money with the chance you could get killed and lose it all. Great fun!

return to castle wolfenstein on the OG Xbox. This was fantastic online and I think one of the first big online hits for Xbox live. Also one of the first titles I played where you had actual classes like healer, engineer etc

quake 3 team arena on PC, I played a LOT of quake 3 and this expansion added a team element and one of the first titles I remember playing where you got awarded points for doing other stuff apart from getting frags. Like helping your teammate deliver the flag or you capturing the flag or returning it, up to this point, this was pretty rare.

shadowrun on Xbox and PC, man I thought this game had so much potential. Magic and guns, trolls and elves, online multiplayer madness where Xbox and PC players could play together in what I think was one of the first cross platform games. Brilliant Fun.

lord of the rings conquest on Xbox 360, made by same dev Team responsible for star wars battlefront 1 and 2 (OG versions)
this basically was battlefront but with characters and classes based on TLOTR, awesome fun and me and my son loved this. Many happy hours.

halo CE on OG Xbox, LAN set up with 2 Xbox, one long network cable, 2 tv’s and hours of weekend fun. The best!

loved all these above titles and there is prob loads more than I can’t think about just yet.

honourable mention goes to team fortress 2, which I know is still active, but I LOVED this game and mainly played spy, which I bloody loved, the first time I did a stair jump stab was one of the most satisfying moments I have ever had in an online game.

would love to see lord of the rings conquest and shadowrun to make a comeback, so much fun to be had online.

so any of you guys played any of the above please? Or got your own beloved games you now miss playing.....

SOCOM 1, SOCOM 2, Phantasy Star Online, and pretty much everything on OG Xbox Live. 2001-2007 was the golden years of gaming for me.

Games I put hundreds of hours into SP/Co-op/MP that I have great memories about and miss...

Goldeneye (N64)
Diablo (PC & PSone)
Everquest (PC)
Halo: Combat Evolved (OG XB)
Rainbow Six 3 (OG XB)
Rainbow Six Vegas (XB360)
Battlefield Bad Company (XB360)
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (XB360)

There was a game I used to play a ton called Gladius on the OG Xbox. It was a turn based RPG, but it was set within ancient Rome and Roman mythology. You might have human gladiators, but could have minotaurs as well, etc. You could drop/add characters, build them up, customize their appearance a bit, etc. I would love to see it become backward compatible at some point.

Mario Tennis N64
Fusion Frenzy 1 (Twisted System especially)
KOTOR 1 (never played 2)

I remember that game it was also on PS2. Was a very good strategy/RPG. It had that meter mechanic when you attacked if you timed it right you did more damage.

There was an old PC game called Tribes (there was a sequel too). A highly competitive multiplayer game with a really high skill curve. Interestingly enough, a bug in the physics code allowed players to move very very fast and actually "ski" downhill. The "bug" turned out to be a blast and soon became a feature. (think Titanfall but even more speed).

Battlefield 1942 and 2. Won't get into the new BF games, but they'e made a bunch of changes that don't feel anything like the classic games.

I miss multiplayer gaming before skill based matchmaking honestly. Maybe you'd run into some lower skilled players, or maybe you'd run into a highly competitive team who would thump you. You never knew, but the next game was likely to be different than the last. Now with SBMM in so many games, the experience feels... forced. It is like that movie trailer with Will Smith fighting a clone of yourself. How do you win if your opponent is exactly like you? I remember the early Destiny 1 days when on PS4 I would occasionally run into players who were top tier youtubers. Getting thumped wasn't fun, but seeing what a great player can do and even trying to adjust against them was something.

X-Wing vs Tie Fighter - why do we not have a modern Star Wars based space combat sim? I know Battlefront sort of tries, but that is bare bones and needs more in depth.

Anybody ever play this game back in the day?

They made 2Xtreme and 3Xtreme, but by God 1Xtreme was definitely the best becuase it had the most options for downhill racing. Luge, inline, skateboard, and biking. These games ruled!!!!!!

I didn't play that one, but 989 had a lot of great games back then. Twisted Metal, Syphon Filter, Jet Moto, and Cool Boarders.

I'm thinking mostly on multiplayer games I guess as that is what would have kept me playing longer than just single player.

Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear and Raven Shield
Ghost Recon 1 and Island Thunder
Command and Conquer series, mainly Red Alert and Generals, as well as spinoffs like Dune

Max Payne 3 online Deathmatch. Just amazing jump in instant action and mayhem.

Splinter Cell Conviction: The Deniable Ops plus DLC maps. These maps were fantastic mini-campaigns. I guess I'm in the weird minority that enjoyed this more that Spies Vs. Mercs. They were a guilty pleasure just because the voice actors for the enemies were so hilarious when they heard Sam lmao. I actually tried installing this from Steam but it didn't want to run on Windows 10.

Okay now this is my major one: City of Heroes + City of Villains pack.

This was a great MMORPG experience with a very detailed character template designer allowing you to create any thing from classic heroes to ninja to mad scientists or cyborgs.

The game was very casual and balanced unlike many shooter games I've tried that seem over competitive or people get annoyed if noobies are on the team.

The community was great with some humor as well from people designing parodies characters. I even had a Fire power guy designed to look like Tim the Enchanter from Monty Python lol.

For reasons that are still vague, NC SOFT just killed the game and didn't allow any other company to pick it up. I've heard recently that somehow some people have acquired the code and have been running the game on private servers a long time and this recently came out. I may try to get on this game again if I move and get a better internet speed. This would probably be a massive download and installation.

Damn I remember city of heroes, DC ONLINE was kinda similar. Yeah they should re-release this on modern consoles and PC.

some great replies, thanks guys.

I tried DC Online and another game Champions online but it didn't feel quite the same.

I think what set City of Heroes apart was the genre and design possibilities was wide open with so many options from Fantasy to Sci-Fi or even a bit of Horror.

Wow I can go way way back with this one. Back to the old Atari 2600 days but I'll try to keep it more recent.

Bioshock
Rainbow Six 3
Splinter Cell
GTA: Vice City
Fatal Frame( I like Japanese horror)
Battlefield Bad Company
Saints Row

Man, Halo CE LAN Parties. Halo 2 MP.
Panzer Dragoon 1&2
I remember having sooo much fun playing Virtua Fighter on the Saturn as well as Sega Rally
Playing the Marvel Fighting Games at the Gas Station while skipping class, lol.
Project Gotham Racing games
I also miss the old days of not having instant info. Getting the latest EGM and pouring through screenshots... ahhh, the good ol days...

My man.

I find myself being overly nostalgic for oblivion lately. Probably gonna replay it a bit and realize it's crap. A lot of old stuff I feel like I've gotten my fill of or is more or less easily accessible, but I do miss those riddick games too.

All of the games that shipped finished and didn't require massive updates to play.

I enjoyed this, but there I wish it had more classes or customization. It would also be nice if the Combiners Transformers could have a role in multiplayer like maybe an earned summon. I haven't kept up on whatever the current Transformers games are.

I also thought the online community was casual just jumping in to play.
