GameStop's Preorder Plans Sound Like Bad News

http://kotaku.com/gamestops-preorder-plans-sound-like-bad-news-1601428457
Of all the things wrong with big, blockbuster video games, few are as s***ty as the obsession with preordering. So you'll be just thrilled to know that GameStop's plans for the future of the practice are, should they ever come to fruition, pretty much a nightmare scenario.

According to a report on GamesBeat, the retail giant recently met with investment company R.W. Baird to talk about the company's future, and one of Baird's analysts has revealed some of the things that they spoke about.
"[GamesStop] indicated that software publishers are more enthusiastic about partnering with it," Baird's Colin Sebastian wrote. "For example, by offering exclusive content on each major game release, and longer term, future models may include GameStop offering exclusive gameplay."
GamesBeat asked him to clarify what exactly that "future model" meant, and Sebastian added the retailer is thinking about "getting involved at the time of game development where there could be some content exclusive to [the retailer] included in the game."
So if you thought it was stupid that peripheral content like skins and maps was split up between retailers, just wait until GameStop can offer actual parts of a game you can't get anywhere else. Then wait for Walmart and Best Buy and Amazon to catch on. It'll be great.
We've contacted GameStop for comment, and will update if we hear back

well this already happens. Some games already have pre-order bonus missions. I really do not see any publisher go beyond that and giving story important sections to specific retailers as pre-order bonuses as people would end up with an incomplete game.

how is that any different when Sony or Microsoft gets exclusive dlc which also includes an extra mission?
Rockstar does that quite a lot with Sony
red dead redemption is an example where ps3 got an extra mission the Xbox 360 people never got

so I CAN see this happening

I have no problem with them adding in extra/additional missions as long as the core missions and everything stays intact.

And its happened the other way around. But those are side missions that don't effect the main story.

Its still BS but will sadly continue.

I agree
I also had the game for both systems and that mission did not really amount to much

Because the missions/added DLC now are not story important. They are side quests or in addition to the finished story/campaign. That will not change for multiple reasons. 1) gamers will not stand for it. I know gamers are general herded sheep, but this would go to the point where gamers have no option but to rebel. 2) it will seriously piss off all other retailers. If only one or several retailers have a complete game, then they are going to receive all the business for that game.

A continuation of what we have now will likely continue. Escalation beyond it, nah.

Yeah this has already been tried, but only with small stuff. I think it was Forza 4 had a few different cars between Best Buy or Gamestop and I know the NHL game has had some special items at Gamestop. It has all just been very small stuff. Still a very shady practice.

Can't believe anyone would support this. Then again this is why we are screwed over as gamers now with exclusive pre-order bulls*** and overpriced DLC out the ass 6 months before a game releases.

Game funded by GameStop purchased at GameStop: $60 - Yay I get to play the whole game!

Game funded by GameStop but purchased elsewhere: $60 - Half way through the game message says "pay additional $30 for the rest of the game!"

People have to get past this idea that because DLC came out you only got "half a game". Most DLC is garbage and adds little to games. It is fine for things like multiplayer maps where if you play a lot you get some bang for your buck.

Did I not get the full Assassins Creed experience as I didn't buy any of the add-on missions? Naw. I don't know anyone who bothered to talk about them. The only way you get screwed is if you open your wallet and do it to yourself.

People also need to get past the idea that DLC being made alongside the game = the content is ripped from the game to make DLC.

As for DLC, I rarely buy it. I only buy sizeable DLC, like that of GTA 4, and MP maps for games that I play a hell of a lot. I never pre-order so that shows how much Pre-order bonuses mean to me.

Actually, its true that, many DLC (not all) are ripped from actual games, because they wanted to charge you more than the acceptable retail price of $60 (or whatever the price in your land).

DLC now may be some side mission and all, but I have no doubt that soon, they will make DLC much more critical (say a special ability like teleporting that can enhance gameplay, or a gadget that allow you to repel) to the core gaming experience, that you feel obligated to pay for it if you wanted the complete experience.

In fact I paid for day one DLC for protein (or whatever the alien race is called) so I do not missed out on some story & a cool character for Mass effect 3. I went on the purchase all DLC anywhere. I am a sucker for Mass effect.

Anyway, having said all these, I am not resisting DLC, or the model (as games are expensive to made) but I much prefer that they do not affect the core gameplay for people who do not get them, & that they are worth the money. I recently bought the GOTY edition of Dishonored with the DLCs (I have the original one, but I figure its cheaper to sell it & bought the GOTY edition than pay for DLC over xbox live), & the extra content of the DLC are worth it for me, & took me about 6 hours or so to beat.

Of course it is about money (games cost more to make, we're going to see $70 games soon). However I've never felt compelled to have to buy DLC that I didn't know was coming. Buyer beware.

Most DLC is easy to predict. MP shooters are going to have multi maps. Driving games are going to have cars and tracks, etc.

You only buy for games you really love, and that's the way most of it works. I've seen no change in it, other than the handful of companies do something sinister, they get blasted for it.

I would think if these publishers/devs hate used games so much they'd be offering the extra content for the digital versions and not at retail. Gamestop and other retailers are going to carry the games either way, they would go out of business if they didn't.

It keeps holding gaming back in the past. Gamestop has a business model with a finite life. Retail is slowly going away. It has just been more slowly because gamers are so stubborn. I have no idea why publishers won't give better deals for digital yet. They don't seem to really care much either way as long as games get sold somehow.

I will be extremely unhappy if I'm ever forced to buy from Gamestop again. I don't think that will happen with anything important. I know with NHL you got a different kind of stick between Best Buy or GS. Nobody really flipping cared.

If it's guns and skins, whatever. When we start getting into exclusive maps, missions, etc, that's when I get pissed.

As if the exclusive stuff that console manufacturers Microsoft and Sony are doing with games like Watch Dogs, Call of Duty, and now worst of all Destiny wasn't bad enough, now we are going to have retailers joining in and making this even more convoluted? Paying off developers to exclude content from other versions is not the answer.

If GameStop needs to do this in order to stay in business, then they should just die as a company. Their prices aren't competitive with online and big box stores, their selection can't compete with online retailers, and they are staffed by self-righteous weirdos who make any store visit unpleasant. I haven't shopped there in 5 years.

The exclusive content inside DLC is pretty horrible in Destiny. Also Exclusive Content in general liek Scarecrow mission in Batman Arkham Knight.

What can be worst than paying the same money, but get less contents?

Retail will slowly die eventually. Some day, someone is going to come up with an online system that works and has game trade-ins. Steam is already mostly there.

All my local game retailers are terrible now. Best Buy has nothing on the shelf anymore, everything is locked up somewhere and you have to ask, then they give you the hard sell on other stuff. The stores never used to be like that.

Gamestop has gotten worse. Now you get stuck behind people selling a bunch of stuff and there's only one cashier. God forbid you get behind the kid selling his old gen console and entire library with his Mom helping them.

wow sound like what MS was trying to do and got blasted for it, but it is ok for steam?

But I do agree with more of your post. The only for both MS and SONY nweed to figure out something to make it even more attractive to buy online copies. That family sharing is such a high value its crazy for people not want to do it.

I cut ties with this company a long time ago.

At first I always thought it was cool that there was a dedicated gaming store, but over the years it is very clear that they have transformed into a bit of a leech.

Their system needed some tweaking, and mostly they needed to offer gamers better options rather than trying to change physical media so much. Steam took years and years to evolve into the system people loved. There was a lot of hate against Steam back when Orange Box came out.

It takes time for gamers to accept big changes. I would love to see a poll here about who is going all digital vs physical, etc.
