Finally was able to start the game. Only planned on playing for a hour, ended up playing through the tutorial and all of Act 1. Having a lot of fun. Game has great graphics, but I need to figure out an HDR adjustment I'm happy with. Default HDR settings seem funky to me.

I raised my HDR setting quite a bit, I think I put it up all the way.

They were another studio and then MS bought gears and they had to work on that instead, the studio was already working on an IP and even had a CGI trailer for something at the Xbox One reveal

Yeah, this is the trailer from their "Black Tusk" days.

A little generic but I guess this was more of just a pitch type thing and not necessarily representative of what they were pursuing.

I think TC will be given the freedom to create another team and try at another IP -- just like Playground Games, Id imagine. With the success of Gears 5, seems like a good time to do it.

Yeah, maybe they can create 2 teams, like how PG did. I get that they were created for Gears..but a studio of this quality..it would be great to see them work on something else too.

Gameplay looks nothing like it though, the models take a huge dip in quality in gameplay (as they do in most games) so I don't get why so many people are amazed by them. When you are able to corner a character in decent lighting they look about the same quality as every other game, even below some AAA titles. I know 60fps requires sacrifices but I just don't see what some others seem to be seeing I guess. It looks good but there are some wonky textures, some low poly areas on the sides of trails, that open ice area where you sail that vehicle around is so lifeless it almost seems to me like it's just there to extend the playtime and have the characters talk out story stuff, I will say once again an MS studio did a great job with the HDR though. The more I get into the game the less impressive I find the visuals, don't get me wrong it looks good but every gears game looks good. If I had to compare this to say Battlefront 1 and 2 I'd give those games the edge in visuals, I know they aren't quite the same thing but the materials looked more realistic and they also targeted 60fps.

Hopefully I get out of the ice soon and see something different, maybe it'll get better as time goes on. I do find the story a bit boring and Kate still isn't a very likeable character to me. Also that character who's a jerk for no reason is way over the top and his big "reveal" about a certain event that we barely knew anything about fell flat, they presented it like it was some big drama moment but we weren't there for it to begin with so why should we care?

One of the cool things is when you are on the Skiff in the snow and you pull up to a destination. You can see the Skiff tracks in the snow, nice and deep, as well as your walking tracks. And they don't disappear while you are there. They looks so damn real. :surprise:

This is how they did it:

The third biome in Gears 5 is based on ice - an area that offers both new rendering features and gameplay concepts. One key feature is deformation, allowing characters, objects and vehicles to leave persistent, accurate trails in their wake. A tessellation shader is run on local deformation allowing the paths to appear smooth and artefact-free, while a normal map is generated dynamically from this data, allowing the deformation to remain visible even at a distance. The same technique is also used in the desert stage, with tracks from your skiff even stretching back into the distance.

Don't even need two teams. You have Gears 5 with a live service. No reason you can't keep it going for longer while working on a new game.

TC knocked this game out of the ball park. Graphically and gameplay. Here was their conclusion:

Whether it's a case of tomorrow's technology today, or simply all about getting the most out of Gears 5 across a vast range of PC gaming hardware, the key takeaway is pretty straightforward: The Coalition's work here is exemplary - and sets the standard for other PC ports in virtually every regard.

Finished campaign.
Better than gow4.
Looks AMAZING.
sounds great.
Kait fine lead character (although would rather have had JD entire time).
Story great, really amazing what they've done with this imo while still keeping Baird and Marcus.
Jack upgrades good gameplay element.
Semi open world hubs works fine, would like them to take this further next time though.
I will say though, it's riddled with bugs and crashes, more so than any big release I can remember playing at launch this gen.

He's by far the best looking model during gameplay IMO.

Yeah, Dell looks good. Those are great in-game models. Tons of geometry. and they are lit well. Once we get raytracing, they will start matching up with cutscenes. Micro shadows and AO are a big part of it - especially around eyes, nose, and mouth.

Unfortunately Act 3 is ugly. The lighting is awful and flat.

I actually quite like the Skimmer. It's a more entertaining parallel to the boat segments in God of War.

I don't find them more entertaining simply because the talking going on is fairly meaningless, the stuff in the other GOW was between a father and son and kind of set the mood more.

I'm not going to turn this into god of war vs gears of war thread but I do have a few pics that weren't taken in photo mode of god of war and Kratos looks so much better than these models, the eyes look real, there is a lot more detail etc. I think part of it has to do with the lighting, while the HDR effects in Gears 5 are great the overall lighting is fairly flat all around, at least in the parts I've seen so far. I'm not going to make a final judgement until I complete the game, it's really not drawing me in at this point though. I think the original Gears trilogy had something that the games since then have lacked, there was more heart in them and it didn't seem forced, the stuff with Kate all just seems fake and like it's trying too hard to me.

the boss at the end of act 2 is pissing me off. I keep freezing him and shooting him in the back with my lancer but as time goes on he eventually jumps a mile through the air and lands on me and kills me :(

I just finished that fight last night, took a bunch of tries but some things that helped me with that fight were:

Jack:
-The Pulse Augment which provides +20% damage while the enemy is lit up and the one that boosts that time by 50%. This also helps you see where that f***er is when your vision is obscured.
-Fully ranked Flash, lets you freeze him at will and open him up to damage. Which is great for laying out damage and getting you out of tough spots.

Weapons:
-I did most of my damage with the pistol/sniper. It's obviously a lot easier to nail those far away shots with the sniper and even if use it when you're up close you can usually nail 3-4 shots in a row if you get perfect reloads after each and then at least one more when he jumps out of the iced water. The speed boosts on the pistol when you get perfect reloads (i forget the name of the pistol tbh) was nice to deal out damage and easier to aim with up close obv.

Positioning:
-When you walk in the level it's kind of this really really wide 'Y' shape of an area. Going to the top left or top right allows you to use the walls for cover and if you have enough distance keeps him from jumping directly at you and hitting you with his spikes/quills. Also lots of ammo all over the place so you can just wear him out.

If worst comes to worst, adding a second player will help you a lot. It's a shame that Del is basically useless, the only shots I saw him take was when he fired at the front of the enemy where he is completely invulnerable 100% of the time... thanks Del. Having someone control Jack would probably even easier, as they can control the Pulse/Flash and do a bit of extra damage.

Thank you! I am going to use this!!

‘Gears Of War 5’ Is Beautiful In A Way Nothing Else On Xbox One Or PS4 Can Match

The game is stunning. I don’t have the full Digital Foundry-level breakdown on why it’s so stunning, other than the obvious big numbers like running in 60 FPS at 4K, which is a pretty monumental achievement itself in this day and age on console, even on the powerful Xbox One X.

It manages to make Gears of War 5 feel like a next generation title before the next generation even gets here. This is kind of how things work now with “intermediate” consoles like the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, as these half-generations have opened the door to a whole host of visual and gameplay improvements. But not every game takes advantage of those. In this case, however, it feels like Gears 5 is wringing every last drop out of the full power of the Xbox One X, which is, notably, a good amount more powerful than the PS4 Pro, and you can see it in every scene of the game, even from the opening moments where you descend into a waterfall chasm seemingly designed to show off the game’s beauty immediately.

Holy s*** is the snow level boring.
I loved the story and dialog in that level and searching for collectibles. The Skiff is soooo smooth at 60fps on the X. Not to mention the skirmishes involved in getting “the stuff”.

I am bummed that we are locked out of that level after we choose to continue the campaign

People need to stop saying it's 4K 60fps. It TARGETS 4k and 60fps but rarely ever reaches Native 4K and is def not a locked 60fps. There is dynamic res with a temporal upscale.

Yeah it's almost always "faux K" and that's totally fine, the people who keep saying it's native just need to stop spreading misinformation. I also notice some screen tearing at the top from time to time.
