Gears Of War Tactics

Downloaded it last night so hope to give it a try today. I really enjoyed Gears of War 1 when it launched then didn't bother touching the series after that. Played through the first again with a friend that had never played the story, got half way through the second and then got bored. Would like to try playing them again but it's my understanding this is a prequel anyways so no worry on being out of place at least.

Are you serious? You should really play Gears 5. There's even a recap of what happend throughout the series.

Played through the intro level. It's surprisingly well done. Plays like a dream. Also, it is another well done optimization job by the Coalition. 21:9 support, both controller and keyboard support.

The game looks and runs like what I expect some next gen games to.

I played the first mission as well. Very well done. Gameplay is incredibly satisfying. Pay attention to your action points, ammo, cooldowns, & line of sight (esp for abilities). Very approachable first mission that trains you on the mechanics.

The story initially throws you into the fight with a good sense of urgency. New characters are intriguing, and the graphics are utterly delicious. It is a bit cumbersome to play with controller though & I hope improvements can be made for console launch.

Lastly, you have to hand it to Xbox for nicely-executed genre bending games like Halo Wars, Gears Tactics, and the upcoming Minecraft Dungeons. What's next - a Forza Motorsport JRPG? Fable platformer? Ori puzzle game?

I'm not far into Gears Tactics. Played enough to get a taste. Really great first impressions. Feels different from Xcom without being shallow on the tactical layer. Highest productions values and best graphics that I've seen in the genre. First couple missions do a good job highlighting what makes this game different. Love the over-watch change and how teammates have to play off each other. Like the increased use of grenades and added bonuses for melee kills.

Also interesting to note that Coalition was responsible for the game design despite outsourcing most of it's development to an external studio. Might be a sign of things to come. If Microsoft is putting this kind of money into a niche PC genre, can't wait to see what else they have in the cupboard.

Does it offer difficulty levels?

Does it offer difficulty levels?

Yes.

Beginner
As its name suggests, this is the easiest difficulty mode in Gears Tactics. It’s reserved for players who are new to real-time strategy games, or those who wish to immerse themselves in the story more than the combat.
Intermediate
What you should consider as Gears Tactics‘ “normal” mode. Intermediate is designed for players who like a challenge but also wish for a bit of forgiveness if they mess up at any point, such as losing non-hero characters in your squad.
Intermediate difficulty is also the optimum experience for you when starting your first playthrough if you’re familiar with RTS titles.
Experienced
This difficulty mode is reserved for players who plenty of, well, experience with RTS games. Consider yourself a seasoned pro if you select this option. Just don’t complain to us when you lose a fair chunk of your supporting cast for not getting to grips with Gears Tactics‘ combat.
Insane
The hardest difficulty. This should only be selected by gamers who are experts at RTS titles and those who want an unforgiving playthrough. You’ll need to plan every move methodically in this mode, otherwise you’ll find yourself continuously hitting that “restart checkpoint” button.
Ironman mode
This is an extra difficulty option you can toggle on in the menu before you start a new campaign. Ironman mode can be selected on any of the above difficulties, but it comes with a huge price if you mess up at any stage.
Ironman mode ends your campaign and deletes your save file as soon as you lose one Hero character during any part of your playthrough. It doesn’t matter if it’s Gabe Diaz, Sid Redburn, or another Hero. If they die, the game automatically ends and you’ll have to start all over again.
This adds something especially challenging to your campaign, but bear in mind that you’ll lose your entire save if anyone important dies. We wouldn’t want you to get to the endgame and see your file deleted if someone perishes.

That's me. I have never done a RTS.

Yes nothing wrong with this. Its good to start easy, experiment with the sandbox and upgrades and then turn up difficulty once/if you're comfortable with it. In this game, melee and finishing kills to give your teammates extra action points and use of overwatch are key. Also don't save your special moves or grenades for rainy days since they recharge.

Can seem like a lot to take in at first but I highly suggest everyone to play through a bunch of missions to get the hang of the game loop before deciding if this genre is for them. Look at a YouTube tips video for a starting point. Tactics games can feel really good once you get the hang of them.

Isn't this genre more accurately termed, turn-based strategy, and not real-time strategy? When I hear RTS, I think more along the lines of Starcraft or Halo Wars.

Played the first mission and really enjoyed it. As others have said this is definitely a AAA effort and not just an after thought. Graphics wise it honestly feels like they took Gears of War levels, then zoomed way out for the overview. They really are quite amazing for a game like this. It's been a while since I played XCOM so can't really compare in terms of game play, but so far I'm really enjoying the faster game play with more actions per turn, the ability to gain actions back by executing enemies, etc. It also seems like it's a lot more likely to hit enemies so far unlike what I remember from XCOM. I think I've mentioned my issues with that game in here regarding having a 80%+ chance to hit an enemy but missing. I did miss one attack so far but with the addition of an extra action point, I just shot again and killed him. Of course that means the enemies get an extra action as well but using overwatch seems to help a lot.

What always hooked me on tactics games going back to Final Fantasy Tactics on PSone is building up your characters, unlocking new skills, and the chess like battles. I really need to get back into the genre... just for me newer tactic/RPG’s became so time consuming.

I just need the Xbox version now. But so many games out now and coming, I am in no hurry.

Yes. This is the kind of effort and quality I expect( and expected) to see from any game published under the Microsoft Game Studios umbrella. So far only The Coalition seems to be consistent.

As long as next gen consoles are still on for November/December release, I think this would make a great launch title.

The more I play, the more I'm agreeing with you. This would be a great showcase for the series X.

Some tips:

-Recruit new people after every mission. They often come with their own weapon/armor upgrades that you can use for your regular characters.

-If you see a crate on the battlefield, you better pick it up during a battle. Sometimes after a battle is finished, the mission is finished and you won't have the opportunity to grab it.

-Try not to overlap Overwatch when you know Wretches are coming as they are only 1-shot kills and your chars will crossfire them, wasting ammo.

After fixing my issues with not being able to download gamepass games on my Windows store/Xbox Beta app (absolutely dreadful) I was able to DL Gears Tactics and gave it a whirl and I actually have been enjoying it. Playing on beginner of course but I am starting to get the grasp of it.

I'm playing on easy mode as well - it's not very punishing, but still highly satisfying.
