Xbox Series X Specs & AMD NAVI RDNA 2.0 Micro-Architecture

During the Video Game AwardsMicrosoft’s Phil Spencer took the stage and surprised everyone with the Xbox Series X console design and official name reveal. After the show in a blog post, Phil also shared updated information regarding Xbox GPU technology like Ray Tracing and Variable rate shading. This leads TechPowerUp to believe that the latest Xbox console might be utilizing RDNA 2.0 micro-architecture produced on an improved 7nm + EUV production process.
“Hardware-accelerated ray tracing and variable-rate shading will be the design focal points for AMD’s next-generation RDNA2 graphics architecture. Microsoft’s reveal of its Xbox Series X console attributed both features to AMD’s “next-generation RDNA” architecture (which logically happens to be RDNA2). The Xbox Series X uses a semi-custom SoC that features CPU cores based on the “Zen 2” microarchitecture and a GPU based on RDNA2. It’s highly likely that the SoC could be fabricated on TSMC’s 7 nm EUV node, as the RDNA2 graphics architecture is optimized for that. This would mean an optical shrink of “Zen 2” to 7 nm EUV. Besides the SoC that powers Xbox Series X, AMD is expected to leverage 7 nm EUV for its RDNA2 discrete GPUs and CPU chiplets based on its “Zen 3″ microarchitecture in 2020.”
Exciting Tech
Variable Rate Shading not only implies the use of RDNA 2.0 in the Xbox Series X but also allows for a performance increase. This would free up GPU resources by reducing the shading rate on objects that are barely visible at the time of rendering the scene. RDNA 2 is AMD’s new and improved NAVI’s micro-architecture. According to the latest reports, it is set to offer better power efficiency and improved performance. This means that the Xbox Series X should potentially boast much more raw GPU power and still run very cool.
Improved 7nm+ EUV manufacturing process would allow for higher transistor density plus more compute units or cores on the chip. More cores or compute units equate to better performance. Better power efficiency would allow for reduced power consumption and higher clock speeds. So far Microsoft has not released the full specifications of the Xbox Series X yet, but the information recently shared leads me to believe that their next console will be very powerful.

This is from June, but it backs up the previous numbers I posted:

AMD had a much better customer in Sony this past gen as well, likely double the business they got from MS.

As far as RDNA1 vs RDNA2, again RDNA1 doesn't support hardware accelerated RT only RDNA2 does so people shouldn't be making too many assumptions one way or the other.

MS paid AMD $3 billion up front plus royalties to develop the XB1 SOC.

How much did Sony pay for PS4's SOC again?

From the quick research I did it seems that AMD earns around a $15 profit on each PS4 sold. So 100 Million x $15 = $1.5 Billion in Royalties.
MS paid $3 Billion up front for the XB1 SOC plus on going royalties.

Seems to me that MS is the more lucrative partner especially when you consider that MS shares their own Technology with AMD and now has AMD Hardware in Surface Products.

Let's not forget how much money MS spends with AMD for their other products including Microsoft Surface, xCloud, Azure and their partnership with AMD the Microsoft Windows OS.

The AMD/Microsoft partnership BLOWS AWAY anything that Sony has with AMD.

I’m pretty sure they’re screwing.

I doubt they made more than what they made from PS4/PRO sales.

Am I the only one hopping the Xbox logo is an OLED so it would rotate when laid on its side...that ps4 button attachment has an OLED

Wouldn't it just burn in at some point and end up looking funky though? that'd be a static image every time it's on.

Where did you read that MS paid $3 billion for the SOC? not saying that's incorrect but I can't find that anywhere and being that they had the weaker console it would seem like that's a bit of a stretch, that or Sony likely spent just as much.

I just Posted the numbers but I'll go ahead and post them again:

AMD earns $15 for every PS4 sold. 100 million consoles x $15 = $1.5 Billion

MS paid AMD $3 Billion up front for designing the XB1 SOC. Right when AMD was borderline bankrupt. Hell there were rumors MS was going to buy AMD. On top of that there are royalties for the XB1 SOC.
Clearly MS is AMD's best customer.

It was Well known back in 2013.
Here is one of the stories:
MS to pay AMD $3 billion for Xbox One SOC

It was clear at the time that Sony got a much better deal with AMD for the PS4 than MS for the XB1.
If I remember correctly that pissed off executives at MS who went crying foul to AMD execs.

Arcturus is vega not navi.

Vega came out in 2017. Arcturus is not yet officially released and is just now starting to show up on HWInfo. Sounds exactly the same to me.

Substantially more than they made with PS4/Pro sales. And that is just on Xbox One. That doesn't even cover AMD's deal with Surface, Azure and Xcloud.

Substantially more is an understatement.
AMD was able to stay in business as we know it because of MS's generous deal.
That $3 billion allowed AMD to do the research and development on both the XB1, PS4 SOC'S, Ryzen, Navi, etc.
Getting $1.5 billion over 6 years is very different than getting $3 Billion up front plus royalties.
That $3 Billion is indirectly responsible for all of AMD's recent tech. MS quite literally saved AMD in a different way than the way MS saved Apple.
