Talks about subscription models and their impact on gaming and other mediums.

Suggests may be some parts of the math isn't working out at least for Sony.

MS already raised theirs before Sony.

MS releases day and date into GP. Maybe Sony is going to follow.

Larian director : " The best way to support developers and publishers you like is to buy their games, if you can afford it."

Sony are too ignorant for that.

The real issue for devs and games in subscription based services is the complete lack of forethought and planning.

Look at MS, they are doing the premium pass thing. Totally optional. Seemingly popular. What have the Lies of P folk done? Nothing. There is no monetary way to boost them in the sub service.

Death's Door, great game. Why no DLC??
Outriders, took too long to get DLC out.

Not talking s***ty microtransactions or battle passes either.

The whole appeal of Game Pass is instant access to 30 million gamers, but most 3rd party devs flatout don't take advantage of that.

The need for constant growth is what's hurting everyone and not just subscriptions.
We know both MS and Sony are unhappy with the lack of growth in the console market hence PC and now more importantly looking at mobile.

That's the issue with publicly traded companies, doing well and being steady is never good enough. If you bring in a nice profit you'd think that'd be good enough but it's not. You have to beat the last quarter etc. or people start freaking out.

Looks like Gamepass is upping the price here in Canada at least. Got a friend whose ultimate is expiring and they want $541.99 + taxes. They don't even say what's the recurrence period in the email sent.

"Thank you for being an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate member. We are planning to update our prices to address changing market conditions. This price change allows us to continue to bring you more value and great games for the very best gaming experience. Starting September 12, 2024, you will be charged $551.99 plus applicable taxes every recurrence period unless you cancel up to two days prior to your next scheduled payment date. You can manage your subscription, how you pay, or cancel your subscription by visiting your Microsoft Account here."

edit: added this tweet, they are raising from 18.99 to 22.99 +tax monthly. Oof.

Nope won’t pay even half that. Cheaper to buy games.

The other week, I just paid $25 for 3 months and bought several quantities of that. I'm set.

We probably won't see that deal much anymore.

Everyone's situation is different. I look for deals and have a back log where I don't need the next day 1 game. Sometimes I will and sometimes I'll wait. I have the luxury for that. This is my hobby, so some money is well spent in my eyes. I also have a nephew where I share my account. Because my account is the owner on his console, he gets all the Game Pass games too.

Again, like any purchase, look at the value you are getting and how often you are using it.

I do the same with TV subscriptions.

Actually harder to find something that's not gone up over the last 4 years.

Looks like it's about 4 full priced games a year. So while many will be a little miffed I doubt we will see a large amount of cancellations if any.

But now they have the issue of Game Pass Day 1 advertising so should have probably just kept Xbox Gold.

Yup. PSN went up 35% like 9 months ago. Welcome to the now!

You don't need an Xbox, right? Well, if you don't on a console, you can't buy games to play on them. So they option to play Xbox games through other means and those will have a cost.

You just have to ask your self if there's value there. Look at your situation. Each situation differs between others. This is with every subscription model. I don't pay for MMOs because I don't like the idea of paying for 1 game for a certain amount of time. That's not attractive. Same for microtransactions. People might really like a game and feel the value in purchasing characters and skins for a game. Good for them.

I haven't paid for PSN since 2021 because it was garbage at $30 on sale and it's beyond terrible at whatever price it is now.

I bought a few of those lol. My sub is expiring Nov 2024 and not planning to renew unless there's a really good deal.

Also this is correct:
