The company has built mysterious four-story structures on barges that are currently in San Francisco Bay and in Portland, Maine's harbor. But neither project is finished, and no work is being done on either one.

A couple of secret Google projects going up on opposite sides of the country are apparently stuck treading water, as word of a work halt on the Portland, Maine, effort joins last night's news of a work stoppage in San Francisco.
Last week, CNET was first to report the connection between Google and a mysterious structure going up on a barge in San Francisco Bay. The edifice, some four stories tall and made from shipping containers, is now covered in scaffolding and dark netting on a stationary barge alongside Treasure Island, a former Navy base in the bay.



I have heard there are now 4 of these things
so what do you think they are for?

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) – Nearly a week after it was uncovered, Google is staying silent about mysterious barges off Treasure Island and in Maine. Meanwhile, KPIX 5 has received comment from the U.S. Coast Guard about the project, and has obtained details about the barges and who owns them.
We have found at least three barges, two with container structures on them, all marked with the letters “BAL” followed by four numbers. The two barges located at Treasure Island are identified as BAL0010 and BAL0001. A similar barge in Portland, Maine is identified as BAL0011.

some say those things will be servers, they are in international waters??
or just data centers.. water based data centers


actually I though of the Kinect as the start of skynet
 
In reality, it's probably no where near as exciting as it could be.

The system Google engineers sketch out is a self-powered data center placed three to seven miles offshore, potentially operating off the grid. Standard shipping containers would house racks of computers that could be transported by truck and placed onto a boat by crane.

(Reuters) - How badly does Google want to keep under wraps a mysterious project taking shape on a barge in San Francisco Bay? Badly enough to require U.S. government officials to sign confidentiality agreements.


A California state inspector, who said he had business in the hangar-like Building 3 where some of the early construction took place, told Reuters he had to surrender his mobile phone and sign a confidentiality agreement in order to enter.
Bob Jessup, a construction company superintendent who works in a building across the street, said Google spent the past year working on the project. He said they fenced off a wide area and brought in at least 40 welders a day, who worked around the clock and refused to say a word.
"They wouldn't give up any of the information," Jessup said. "It was a phenomenal production. None of them would tell us anything."

I assume this ties in with googles idea to get the internet everywhere?

It would be a perfect way to get the net everywhere like they want. Could float it down a river to get in closer to certain areas all while cooling the whole thing with sea water.

I was reading some of those ideas in the comments about what they think it is... and wow, people are stupid. Floating google store? Made out of shipping containers.... riiiiiiight. "We're Google and we're too damn cool for a mall or stripmall location, get your asses on our barge so we can show you how cool Google glass works when looking at the wall of an old shipping container!"

I have seen people say everything from aliens [outer space aliens] to SHTF.. to BAL= Balaam etc
its kinda funny and sad at the same time
 
well now they are saying these things are party boats , invite only
for google glass?

I like the alien conspiracy rumor better
