Half-life Alyx - Reveal This Thursday 11.20.19

I didn't realize that the entirety of Resetera was in love with this game. Seriously, the impressions thread would sound like total hyperbole if I hadn't played the game and knew for myself how good it is. Glowing user reviews, thousands of them "best game I've ever played" type stuff.

Ok got it set up last night and left my PC on to download the 40gb+ HLA game.
Anyone having problems setting up quest with oculus link, first make sure you have the compatible cable. I got the Anker one from Amazon.

ok once I opened the oculus app on my PC and got my quest set up, I couldn’t get the rift store/space to appear in my quest, I was following instructions from a few web sites and YouTube pages but what some failed to mention and this worked for me, once you have the quest set up via the PC oculus app, then CLOSE that app, put on your quest headset and on the menu you hopefully should see an enable oculus link tab, press that and voila you should be in the rift space.

i only tried the demo/experience called dreamdeck that comes with the app but it’s awesome. Just to whack on the headset and don’t do anything, perfect to show someone VR as they don’t need to do anything. Just sit there and enjoy, plus you can see what they see on the monitor.

ok played about 1hr 30 on HLA and its incredible! i used the continuous motion which after 1hr 30 made me a little sick lol so might switch to blink mode. not played any VR for a few weeks so blink might be more comfortable for me.
on my PC rig (dual GTX 1080, 32GB ram, i7 6700K) HLA ran great via oculus link. stutters a little in places but not game breaking and the software is still in beta.

playing the HL world in VR is amazing, like i said i havent got that far as only played a little but very very impressed to up now :)

Just played a couple more hours using blink mode and no motion sickness at all, this is prob best way for me.
This game is fantastic! gfx and gameplay are top notch.
Can't wait to actually play this. I love that they added so many comfort and motion/teleport options right from the start, as well as support for basically every 6DoF headset that can get to Steam.

Not only is it ace in gameplay and atmosphere, its one of the best-looking games I've ever played too, VR or not

Watched this again with headphones last night. This is really an amazing video that I think every gamer should watch to help understand what VR gaming is really about, and why this game pushes the bar. The physicality is just so beyond what standard gaming can offer, opening up a whole new Pandora's Box in gameplay.

Possible to play without VR?

It already is, but people are complaining everything about it is VR central, including the level design and all the interactions. Black Mesa took years to rework HL1, and that was just a remaster. So, they're thinking this could easily take the better part of decade to make it a decent game and rework the main gameplay loop. It should happen though.

they say you can use the quest
Yep, $400 for Quest...Or Rift S for the same price. You give up the stand-alone option, but add more comfort. There's also the brand new WMR headset from HP/MS/Valve $600 that I think pre-orders just went live on.

there’s talk of a new quest, I may just wait for that...

It's possible for a price drop on Quest this holiday, but Oculus is known for doing new hardware in the spring. Something to keep in mind. I'm glad I got mine while I was still under quarantine. It was the perfect time to explore places within my own home. As long as PSVR keeps coming out with games, I guess I don't need a 3rd headset, nor really want to sell either one. I just wish I had a gaming PC, all of the sudden. It's really a darn shame the way Microsoft is dragging their feet on console VR. The VR community would feed itself instantly, IMO. They will never know if they do not try, but I seriously believe that they are holding back the market potential for VR simply by staying out of it.

Played it a few times, it's amazing though I often feel low on ammo all the time. Those things jumping at your face are freaky as hell. Makes me think of way back when I first played HALO and first ran into The Flood, but at the same time how far gaming has come.

I don't own it, but my local mall has a VR Lounge so I tried it there. During lockdown, they added this plus Valve Index so I got to try that to.

What did you think of the Index?

Having speakers instead of headphones is an interesting choice. They sound great and manage to feel directional.

I'm not sure the display is really that much better than the Vive, but it does look really good.

Controls are cool after getting used to them. I will say that while they're amazing with ALYX, they're tricky to use with some other games I tried like DooM VR or Arizona Sunshine. It might just require configuring the controls, but I'm not sure.
