Has Sony ever not delivered on good exclusives for their consoles ?

I remember playing PS1 and had a tonne of good games on that machine. I did skip PS2 and only just got PS3 so can't really comment on PS2, but I heard it had the best games on that machine so not sure. And after only owning a PS3 for a couple of months now, I can say it's got some really good games on it and having a blast with some of their games I haven't played before.

I know Sony hasn't showed much yet, but I know they would have a lot of good upcoming games planned and they haven't showed or announced them yet because they are just not ready to be shown.

So far I've liked and owned GoW3, MGS 4, Twisted Metal, Last of Us, MAG, Uncharted 2/3 and Demon Souls. I bought that Journey game, still haven't played it for more than a few minutes.

IMO, those were worth owning the console for, but honestly I expected a lot more after PS2, which is why I'm holding off on buying the PS4 until there are multiple games on there that I definitely want to buy, hopefully it's cheaper then as well.

Also, Heavenly Sword was a bit of a let down as well as the ones previously mentioned.

So far since owning a PS3, I've bought and liked:

The Last of Us
Uncharted 3
God of War Asension
Everybodys Golf
Infamous 2
Yakuza 3
Motorstorm Pacific Rift
Little Big Planet 2

If Sony can bring more of these and new IP's to the PS4, I will be very happy.

In short?... No.

I plan on buying a PS3 in the new year. Greatly looking forward to it. So, many, good, games.

These are the exclusives that I know I want to play for sure, so far:

God of Wars, Last of Us, Uncharteds, Puppeteer, Dragon's Crown, Resistances, Ratchet & Clanks, Heavenly Sword, 3D Dot Heroes, Killzones, Demon's Souls, Metal Gear

It offers even more arguably great exclusives, obviously, but those are the ones to my taste. I very well may not even end up liking Heavenly Sword or 3D Dot Heroes, but I want to give them a shot at least, they look cool.

I highly reccomend you to play it - it only takes 4 hours or so to complete.. :)
I've played like a dozen times - and it's the only game I got all trophies on.. :p
Also if you want something with fun story, and more meat on it, Yakuza 3 and 4 are really good, that's more like 60 hours games, and should be cheap aswell. :)

Sony has basically only shown what's coming from first parties the first half year - should be lot's of first party games coming out in Q2 and beyond aswell. :) Infamous is february release.
- I think The Order might be summer 2014 tough, but other stuff like MLB:The Show isn't announced yet, but I think we can expect that to be a spring-release. :)

It's an awkward conversation to have at the beginning of a new cycle compared to your impressions from the end of one lasting 7-8 yrs. Sony's consoles have always had strong 3rd party support (less so on PS3 early on, but still very good eventually). On PSX and PS2 that was manifested in terms of 3rd party exclusives. On PS3 Sony had to kind of hold up the exclusives lineup almost entirely on their own. Whether or not you find their offerings valuable or not is personal taste. I personally didn't find them compelling enough to take time from 3rd party titles and hence I got rid of my PS3, but clearly from your list of games you enjoyed they've done a fine job keeping you busy which should be all that matters to you.

These discussions about exclusives early on in a cycle are always a bit murky because during transitions some devs will falter and struggle to keep up with the tech or the tech will erase their strengths for their competition. For instance, devs that were talented with facial animation last gen may struggle to offer unique tech in that area as things like performance capture become more and more accessible to the industry at large.

All depends on the gamer. Sony always seem to be a bit slow getting the games out when a new console launches and they pick up steam as the gen goes on but again it all depends on the gamers.

Haze was listed which most people agree was dire but now and then someone will come in with a ''I really liked Haze'' comment.

The good thing is Sony seem to be cutting down on the announcing a game 2-3 years before its out system apart from the odd delay like TLG :(

So far from owning a PS3 I have found their games seem to be more towards the single player experience and it's a pretty good one if you like good single player games. And from Owning a Xbox the past 10 years I have found most of their games are mainly good for Online and have a good online experience.

I'm hoping next gen though Sony make more of their exclusives more Multiplayer friendly. Hopefully with the party chat they have it will make Sony games more multiplayer friendly and their online will be much better.

They do deliver on exclusives, but they are spread over the lifecycle of the console, not that we get a lot of great exclusives during launch (or launch window).
Some of the exclusives i enjoyed on ps3:
Heavenly Sword
Uncharted 2
Ratchet and clank tools of destruction/ a crack in time
Motorstorm 2 pacific rift
Wipeout hd (psn)
Killzone 3
God of war Ascension
The Last of Us

PS3 had its fair share of exclusives that sucked too.

Looking forward to the ps4 launch games, i think the lineup looks weak on exclusives, like ps3 did. Killzone 4 and drive club seem to be the only exclusives worth a mention.

I guess it takes time to make good exclusives and Sony can only make so many themselves. I heard THE LAST OF US took around 5 years to make, then you got GRAND TURISMO that took about 5 years as well.

They either need to get more first party studios to make good games or get bigger teams so each game doesn't take a s long if we want more great games more often.

Surprised GT took so long seeing as it was largely just the PS2 version.

Just hope they get TLG sorted as its the main Sony first party title I'm interested in. A next gen Motorstorm would go down well with me.

Sony has a large stable of internal developers and so because of that they always deliver quality content. But, something started with the PS3 which seems to be continuing with the PS4. Sony is getting way too sequel happy. Two games revealed for the PS4 are frackin’ sequels, Infamous and Killzone. Now, I like both of those franchises but I want new games. I’m sure things will pick up for the PS4 as time goes by. After all, their developers probably just got final development kits only recently.

I think it's going to be harder for developers to put out new, original titles. Budgets are going up. Someone quoted a developer as saying development costs are four times what they were. That's probably an exaggeration and no doubt it'll come down over time, but still ... more expenses means lower levels of risk-taking means more sequels, fewer new properties. Unfortunately, although we have new platforms, I think original games are going to be fewer and farther between next gen than they were this. We have the indy scene to look towards for innovation, but I expect a lot of sequelitis and me-too'itis from the mainstays of the industry.

Unfortunately a lot of Sony's exclusives just don't appeal to me.

Not a big story-driven scripted action kinda guy, and quite a few of their games lean that way.

I thought Last of Us was just outright terrible for instance, flawed badly from a game-play standpoint. Not a big Uncharted fan.. never liked God of War.. Quantic Dream games generally don't appeal to me, etc.

But they put a ton of effort into their exclusives and they have a big enough variety that it doesn't matter too much that I outright dislike some of their "beloved" series. Resistance Fall of Man (the first) is still one of my favorite last gen games for instance.. found Infamous to be very fun.. really liked what I've played of the Killzone series too.

Sony's choice of games to highlight coming into the next gen have me happy too.. Killzone SF and Infamous SS are my 2 most anticipated exclusive games up until Titanfall releases next year.

So much gaming goodness either way all around.. they are an impressive behemoth of a gaming company.

To tack on to Anderson's point, more importantly, sequels sell. Gamers can cry and cry about wanting new IPs all they want, but 9 out of ten times those sequels outsell the new IP significantly. If I were an exec, I'd take the guaranteed sales of an established IP over a brand new one.

Yup. Got to recoup all those millions of dollars and still make a healthy profit. The easiest, safest way to do that is develop a sequel to a proven "winner," something with broad appeal, the more mainstream and LCD the better.

The start of the next gen should give some new franchises a chance to get a spotlight and a foothold. But over the course of the generation, I expect rising development costs to inhibit innovation and creativity in the $60 games. Hopefully the indy developers will make up for that.

That's interesting, I'm glad to hear it. There seems to be a lot of mixed reviews on the Resistance games (I haven't played them yet). I've heard a good amount of negativity about them, despite the fact that they also seem to be widely considered as classic staples of the PS3 library. I'm intrigued to try them for myself.

I've only played Fall of Man, and read that they took the second game in a different direction that didn't appeal to me (big boss battles, set piece style action.)

RFOM is just a really solid single player FPS.. really good shooting mechanics.. really fun "battles", great levels.. cool weapon system.. I liked the way the health system worked as well.

And I also enjoyed the storytelling, which was done between levels with simple art in the background and a narrator. I feel like the only gamer who really just doesn't enjoy "cut scenes." I love film.. actors.. I can watch slow movies with little dialog.. but there's something about watching in-engine or even generated cut scenes that bores me.

RFOM to me was the best SP FPS experience since Halo CE, and it was also clear they were attempting to capture some of what made Halo CE great.. they have "drop ships" for instance.. which I just find to be really fun to battle against.. you see a ship coming, and you know another isn't far behind it.. the goal being to find the best position or best way to eliminate the first ship quickly so you aren't overwhelmed.

Sounds so simple but I love it.

Actually, that hasn’t been the case for a few Sony sequels. Little Big Planet, Motorstorm, SOCOM and God of War sequels (for example) underperformed. At least, last I read a few months back in a piece which questioned the go ahead with those sequels. And this was in the face of established engines from previous games in those series to keep costs down for a cash-in.

Some new IP fail because they try and cover up the same old stuff done in other games with a new coat of paint. And many gamers are too smart to fall for such shenanigans and don’t bite. I really blame Activision, they pioneered the assembly line approach to game development (sales of Call of Duty lend credibility to their business model). Which is a way to produce a game in the shortest amount of time and cost for maximum profit. A lot of publishers have adopted this approach to varying degrees and won’t touch a game if they feel it won’t spawn a franchise to milk.

To some extent, I think Activision actually followed the precedent EA had set with sports games. They saw there are tons of people out there who will buy a new iteration every year.

I can't blame Activision for churning out yearly CoD games. Four years in a row they sold 20 million+ copies. I think the last one sold over thirty. If I was in charge of Acti, saw the profits vs complaints, I'd go ahead and say, "Yeah, all those other guys can go f*** themselves. NOW BRING ME MY DEEP FRIED BABY WITH CHOCLATE DIPPING CUP!!!" Cause I'd be so rich, I'd be able to get away with cannibalism, obviously. All that said, I'd love to see Acti mix up the formula a little more. Maybe make a RTS or open third world shooter.

The PS3 didn't have great exclusives right away.

I think every company like Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony do this, but I reckon Sony do it the least.

If you look at Nintendo games, they are already making HD remakes on the WiiU, and they just always make, Pokemon, Mario Kart, any sort of Mario game really. What was the last lot of IP's Nintendo made ? I'm not sure as I haven't owned a nintendo for a while, but I don't think they make that many new IP's.

Microsoft, I know a bit about them since I have only owned a XBox since 2002, they seem to pick a IP and just keep remaking it. ON the 360 that I can remember: Halo 3, Halo 4, Halo ODST, Halo Wars, (there was another Halo Can't think of it), then FOZA 2, FORZA 3, FORZA 4 FORZA HORIZON, Fable 2, Fable 3, Fable Journey. Gears 1, Gears 2, Gears 3, Gears of war Juggernaught (or something like that, never played it)

Sony made Uncharted 1, 2 and 3, God of war trilogy, Asension and GOW 3, Grand turismo 5 and 6, KIllzone 1, 2 3.

Am I missing any other franchises from SOny they make a lot of ? I'm not trying to say Sony don't keep remaking thier franchises but seems to me they do it the least out of the big 3 companies and make more new IP's then any of the Big 3 ?
