House of the Dragon - No Book Spoilers

Not too much here to go on.

But even though I hated how GOT ended, I'am looking forward to these spin offs.

I read Fire and Blood and thoroughly enjoyed it. There is a ton of material for them to pull from for this show, but I’m still not too sure what point in Targaryen history this is.

Getting away from the direct source material of the books is probably a good thing. People forget that the reason the GOT show went south is that the author never finished it and probably himself has no idea how to end it.

As long as the writers can handle it. Even without the books there is no reason for the show to get that bad.

According GRRRRR Martin the show ended like it would in the books...but that is irrelevant anyway. How did they ever think that ending worked for the show? It was pure stupidity.

Its not so much the ending itself as much as the journey to it. It could work if they took their time and did it competently.

I don't believe GRRM ever had an ending in mind. In the last book, he introduced all sorts of new characters who weren't even in the show. He was running around in circles. I don't think there is an ending to the books. Maybe some day he finishes that book and proves me wrong, but I'm pretty safe in betting against him. I don't think HBO messed up the ending, I think they were forced to write it themselves.

The problem is that they delayed the last season, over hyped it, but let it be too short. It was painfully clear the moment the show hit the end of the book content and it was adrift ever since.

but they didn't. So, it is the ending itself.

I get why GRR Martin would want to go that route, but as you said, the show didn't lay down the necessary groundwork for it

That may be true, but if he did or not is irrelevant anyway.

No, the problem is that the end simply doesn't makes sense relative to the previous seasons. Season 8 could have been 16 episodes long and the problem would remain.

It was just too poorly written and not satisfying in any way whatsoever.

I think he has the ending but doesn't know how to get there and the books also just aren't really a priority for him anymore

And they show still messed it up. Them passing the books was an obvious outcome from the minute the show premiered so its still their responsibility to deliver. There just isn't any good reason for the last season to be that kind of dumpster fire.

Sounds like this show covers the Dance of Dragons, both the leadup to it (which spans years) and the actual events of the civil war and aftermath. Certainly could be many seasons worth of material.

Also definitely the best possible period to cover of the Targaryen dynasty, and has me absolutely thrilled for the potential because that is probably the greatest story in the lore.

He actually admitted to painting himself in a corner with the books. I blame him mostly for taking us down this road with no payoff. I don't think he has any idea how to end it. HBO sat down with him and supposedly he told them everything, so either he has nothing or he held back. I don't think he has anything.

The #1 reason I think this is because huge chunks of the books and major characters were skipped and it didn't seem to matter. If there was more content, you'd think the network would be all over stretching it out.

GRRM is a fantastic writer, but he's also a giant flake and I think of him almost like a George Lucas who hit some amazing gold for a bit but couldn't keep it up.

Well there is a difference between having nothing and having everything planned. Whether stuff they skipped matters is dependent on how well the books finished. Obviously we will never know.

The show ultimately suffered because the showrunners were ready to move on and rushed to its end. But nobody forced them to take on an unfinished story.

Its especially strange how they took who he will have on the throne and essentially just tacked it on the end without it making any sense or having any bit of satisfaction to it. They might as well have just tossed it.

Given how poorly the last few seasons of Game of thrones was handled, I have no interest in anything GOT related.

Thankfully, Benioff and Weiss are nowhere near this.

It's gone a bit downhill for them with several projects green lit before the final season aired being canned.

They could have and should have got a 3 seasons out of Feast for Crows and Dance with Dragons but messed it up.
And what they did to Dorne.....

Yep. The show should have been 10 full length seasons if they really wanted to do it justice. For whatever reason, they were in a rush/desperate to finish by the end of it, and the legacy suffered greatly because of it.

Personally, I'm not pumped yet to see this. Hopefully, first episode grabs me.

After how Game of thrones panned out and finished, I'm good with not watching this. Glad fans of the series get something else though.
