Help Picking a New TV

Man I remember Val trying to convince people not to buy OLEDs because of burn in... Glad I didn't listen.

I had no idea Lost legacy was a remaster, I thought it was odd to play that first, then I came across a reddit post saying how good the graphics are lol.
Try Forbidden West as well, and yep dark games absolutely shine with OLEDs.

Have you tried any TV/movie content yet?

Just so you're aware, that FPS counter in game mode isn't necessarily indictive of your frame rate, but rather what refresh rate your TV is showing. It's a bit hard to find a good explanation for it, but you'll notice the counter will show 119-120 for games you know only run at 60. But then again if you have VRR active with an unlocked game, that might be your frame rate?

To be fair to Val, some of the older OLED did suffer pretty bad with burn-in. LG seemingly got it together with the C9 and every iteration since. And if seemed like when LG figured it out, so did Sony and OLED took off.

Yeah I think he mentioned he had a bad experience with one….sometimes that’s all you need to turn away from anything

Yeah the one they just added to PS plus extra is the PS5 optimized version and it runs so well. The graphics aged well there and ND always gets the details right especially during fights in the rain and on the car. I can't believe how much more details I can see now with just an extra 10" , could also be the improved PQ too.

I know what you mean about the counter. I am running performance mode and fps unlocked , so that's why I believe that's my fps counter because it shifts all the time in the 80s-90s . I can't wait to try the 120hz 40 fps modes now that I have a TV that can take advantage of it. I'll probably play Burning Shores DLC when that comes out but I have no doubt HFW looks astounding as it already did when I was playing on the X950G.

I have only tried Modern Family on Disney plus and I tried out Infinity War there as well when I was calibrating DV mode. It looked so good !

Have you tried watching anything that’s not streamed?

I cant find the site, but there’s one that list all blurays with true 4k and has an updated list with recent releases on the home page

Not yet.

I don't normally own blurays or physical media for movies.

Any suggestion on HDMI cables?

Preferably something that's available on Amazon and won't break the bank. I'd like the most up to date spec btw.

I've rearranged my entertainment center and might not have all the right lengths that I need, and my HDMI cables are older because I'm only doing 1080p right now, but plan to move up to 4k next year so if I need to get some new cables, makes sense to get the latest spec right?

Yup, that'll do (even though it's twice the price on Amazon.ca )

And there is no new HDMI spec about to come out for next years TV's/Receivers?

Thanks man!

Sorry about that. Didn't know you were Canadian. But you're a Leafs fan so I should have known.

There isn't any new hdmi spec coming out to my knowledge. This should last you for this generation of Consoles, PC graphic cards, Tv and receivers.

Sorry if this didn't turn out well (I'm bad at internet despite a good 25+ years practice)

Really love my new setup. Same stuff just rearranged. Gone is the OG Xbox One. Probably going to sell it. I just don't game as much as I used to and if I do get the newest Xbox it's not going to be anytime soon. My PC does the job.

And it's removal gave me a nice place to put the current vinyl record I'm listening to. Done SERIOUS cleaning of my room. Do Not Even Mention the wallpaper please, I can't be arsed to remove everything out of there to re-do the walls. LOL!

So I am using a Sony HX850 as a computer monitor, my HTPC does everything I need entertainment wise. Yamaha something or other, Thorens TD-150 MkII turntable with SME 3009 arm and Shure cartridge with Jico SAS stylus (was my dad's table, I have upgraded a lot of it, sounds awesome)

Axiom M22ti bookshelf speakers, and Shure SRH840 headphones which get used a lot when people are around.

Not the latest and greatest, but pretty sweet! I honestly look forward to getting home from work, plopping down on my couch, and having entertainment nirvana right at my finger tips.

I honestly don't know why people don't have a HTPC setup going on. I swear everyone I know in real life, barely any of those people have anything other than a smartphone and an iPad........"So where's all your stuff?" I say and they look at me like "old man, you need to get with the times"

Nah, I'm good. Streaming? Pfffft.

I appreciate the simplicity of good old fashioned quality, no buffering or subscriptions required.

Just kinda posted my set-up for future reference when I ask "should I get an OLED or a micro-LED if I'm using my TV as a computer monitor"........ Next year for sure (wish me luck that I'm here to ask that haha)

Maybe get a c2 or if ya feeling frisky a g2. I know a few who use them as monitors for work/graphic design. I’m really tempted in doing the same.

Definetly agree with you on physical, don’t get me wrong, streaming is conviene. But even then, if I see a trailer for a movie or game I’m excited for I’ll wait till I get home, turn on y tv and speakers and watch it there 😆

My niece is kinda following suit, she knows what headphones, in my collection, to use just for music or gaming. And knows what about clarity, sound stage and detail is lol she tells her dad too what she notices that he doesn’t, my sis is like “you’re making her picky with your pricey stuff” I’m like “nah, I never buy at full price unless it’s the only option” some of my headphones are like 30 bucks and my speakers were half off 😆 but I digress….yee

An LG Tv, specifically the model name….both OLED TVs

Oh ok. Thanks.

Not gonna lie, and this is weird because I'm a self admitted Xbox/Microsoft fanboy........

I'm probably gonna go Sony. But I will definitely look into those models.

I use my LG CX Oled as a computer monitor. Has been one of the best things gaming wise I have ever done. As long as you baby it and pay attention to burn in potential, you should be fine. If you intend to be productive like typing and alot of bright static images, go with the micro-led.

Sorry to post again, and maybe I can figure this out myself.......

But it just dawned on me that the ideal size of my next television should be kinda exactly the same width as my TV stand.

Which is precisely 124cm wide or 48.82 inches.

I haven't had to figure out math like this in a long time. I'm fairly sure I'm looking at something either 50" or 55". But of course TV's are measured by their diagonal screen length no?

Sorry.

edit: wow I am dumb. Why don't I go look at some Sony TV's and see what their actual width is? Durrrrrrr.

And for sure will be looking at other options too and LG for sure if I'm thinking OLED.

LG G2 is one of the best TVs on the market, don’t pay the Sony tax.
Let me go look it up.

I'm not buying a TV until after the SuperBowl next year. When the new models have been announced, and either decide on a new model, or find a deal on the best prior years model in my price range because in my experience that is the best time to buy a TV. Maybe even a display model like the one I have right now is. Couldn't be happier with my current TV.

edit: ok so the LG G2 55" is 48.1 inches wide........ideal........

eArc HDMI 2..........not 2.1...........

I have not looked at the price yet. Wait for another edit (I'm getting way too excited here, edits keep the posts down I hope)

Ok, checked the price. Currently out of my price range.......come February next year maybe not out of my price range (which is kind of $1500 Canadian before tax)

I second the g2 (I’m a Samsung fan), granted I don’t have one but I’ve used it and seen it in action at in other homes. The LG TVs have the most features and four hdmi2.1 ports or whatever the latest number it is atm lol

Sony does make some really good TVs, I’ve used my brothers, with integrated speakers that are really good and said tv has a feature where it could be used as a center channel for your theater setup.

Hisense and TCL make some good ones too….I forget the specific models, but that may be dependent on the purpose of the tv. But honestly there’s no bad TVs, well the pricey ones/flagships.

But I’m sure there’s others out there with first hand use and better knowledge…. @Nervusbreakdown

Don't know what you're referring to. The LG G2 is HDMI Input (HDCP 2.2) . The eARC (HDMI 2) means that its on the 2nd hdmi input out of the 4 total, not the version type.

Hey honestly guys this has been a really helpful conversation, even though I don't plan on getting a new TV (and receiver) until next year, it's been so informative.

HDMI 2.1 is a must, I know that.

I also now know that I'm looking for a 55"

Thanks big time. I think we all try to get bang for buck and make sure we have the latest and greatest.........that we can afford. So big thanks for the info!

I would say that I was looking at this TV on Bestbuy.ca and the specs said HDMI 2 for the eARC, it's Bestbuy, probably shouldn't trust that...........my bad.

By next year the g2 may be even cheaper, if it’s still around. Atm the 55” G2 Is 1500, but I’ve seen it go on sale as low as 1200.
