Help Picking a New TV

My OLED had a horizontal line of pixels die recently (luckily at the very bottom of the screen, very rarely notice it). I'm thrilled that this was one of the few things I've ever paid for an additional coverage plan on (Best Buy Geek Squad), as they apparently usually replace your old set with a newer equivalent model if they can't fix it themselves. I'm waiting until these new models release before I report it. Worst cast scenario they give me a CX, but maybe I'll luck out and they'll only have these newer models in stock. Either way, I'll get a newer TV with features I'm missing on the C8.

There seems to be a brewing battle between HDTVTest with a much smaller channel. The much smaller channel is claiming that V. Teoh is paid by the major TV manufacturers to spout marketing BS in their support. I don't know who's telling the truth but I do agree with the smaller channel about how dull and lacking in color Cinema Mode looks, which is highly pushed by V. Teoh. But that's not proof of anything other than I prefer more color that's offered in Cinema Mode for most content I watch. I just find it interesting that someone is calling out V. Teoh as a shill but also offers no proof other than his word.

I don't get the love for cinema mode, they push it on OLED sub reddit too, it just looks so dull, it might suit some movies, but for the majority I'll have my own settings thank you.

What gamma settings are you guys using? I use 2.2 for some things and BT1886 for others. For my set, the Cinema modes are my preferred settings for movies and TV, but some inputs and streaming services seem to have wonky gamma / contrast levels that I need to adjust gamma levels to BT1886 to make sure it doesn't look washed out.

I've definitely noticed I need to make some adjustments to color levels in Game Mode, standard "50" color seems far too drab on both SDR and HDR.

I use 2.2 too, lol. Also, I never change it since it seems to look the best to my eyes for things I watch. Cinema Mode was just too dark and muddy for me. I know they say Cinema Mode shows the creators original intent for how the film should look. But too me the original intent looks like ass so I don't use it.

I've ditched Game Mode. I just couldn't find my happy place with the mode and gave up. Luckily, I can still enable VRR on my set which is awesome. Unfortunately I lose out on Auto Low Latency Mode when not in Game Mode but this Set has hella low latency so I don't notice the loss. I guess if I played a lot of online PVP it would make a difference but I don't so I'm good, haha.

I think I fixed the issue I was having with Game Mode last night. At times things were too dark and without it things appeared too bright. It looks like Hitman 3 is a great game to use for calibration since it has both very bright and shadowy details throughout the levels. It took about an hour of tweaking the black levels and now Game Mode isn't crushing the blacks while preserving all the details. And in bright scenes its not washing out the other surrounding colors. Finally, after almost 2 months with the LG C1 I think I have things set up for gaming just the way I like it.

I tried a few games out on the PS5 to see if the settings hold up there and they do. This is great since I want to get Dying Light 2 on PS5 and I expect a zombie action game to have a lot of dark environments and details.

Dying Light 2 for Xbox.

These guys push cinema mode? I keep my tv in standard and just tweak a few things, I don't know why anyone would ever use vivid or cinema for regular viewing.

I never use game mode, no matter what tv you have the picture loses something in game mode, I keep it in standard, the input lag is supposedly around 90 ms but I don't feel any difference between that or the 25 ms in game mode, personally I think a lot of that is overblown and I'd rather have the improved picture quality.

I keep thinking about picking up a QD oled after Sony's comes out but I'm not sure if I want to do it this year or give them another year just to see if they make any improvements.

There are a group of tech youtubers who focus on televisions that have a "shootout" with the new sets each year, this year the Sony QD-OLED won followed by the Samsung QD-OLED in second place. The guy made a typo in the tweet, he makes it sound like a QD-LED won but it was the QD-OLED..
