The next Hitman game won't be an Absolution-style audience expansion project, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda has told Nikkei Trendy - it'll be first and foremost a game for long-term fans of the series.

Announced in January, the new Hitman is next gen (or should that be "current gen"?) and PC exclusive, and is the story of "a globetrotting Agent 47 at the prime of his career". According to the release, gaming's most sinister baldy will "[stalk] his prey across the world, with the support of his long-term handler Diana Burnwood and the whole of the ICA. The game concentrates on the core Hitman fantasy of using a wide range of tools to take out a diverse group of targets across expansive, exotic locations around the world."

Square Enix feels returning the franchise to basics is now vital. "The development team for Hitman: Absolution really struggled in this regard," Matsuda told the mag, via Siliconera. "They implemented a vast amount of 'elements for the mass' instead of for the core fans, as a way to try getting as many new players as possible.

"It was a strategy to gain mass appeal. However, what makes the Hitman series good is its appeal to core gamers, and many fans felt the lack of focus in that regard, which ended up making it struggle in sales."

"So, as for the AAA titles we're currently developing for series, we basically want to go back to their roots and focus on the core audience, while working hard on content that can have fans say things like 'this is the Hitman, we know'. I believe that is the best way for our development studios to display their strengths."

Good. Absolution rarely felt like a Hitman game for me.

Can someone explain to me what was 'non core' about Absolution? I never played it but I did play a few of the other Hitman games over the years.

If this means it will be more like Hitman 2: Silent Assassin than consider me a customer. That game was so good for so many reasons.

I hate Retribution in so many ways. I wonder what became of the REAL IO developers who created Hitman and Freedom Fighters. I know most of them split from Eidos back in 2007.

This has been said about the new game today:

Next Hitman will miss E3 2014, first concept art shown

Hitman developer IO Interactive has released the first piece of concept art from its first, along with some initial details and an admission that the game will not be shown at E3 2014 next month.

hitman-next-pc-ps4-xbox-one
IO revealed the art over on the official Hitman site, and wrote, “We’ve seen a lot of people talking about what we might be bringing to E3 this year. We know the worst thing is to hope for something that doesn’t turn up; so we wanted to let you know that our next Hitman is going to be under wraps for a bit longer.

“We’re focusing all of our time and efforts into creating the best possible Hitman game. That’s our number one priority and we don’t want to divert valuable resources to show something before it’s ready.”

On what you see above, the studio continued, “The good news is we’re making great progress with building exotic and expansive locations for the new game. To give you an idea of what we’re aiming for, here’s the first piece of concept art from the game.

“This location is set in Central Europe and you’ll be able to explore the entire building you see in the image, inside and out. For a sense of scale, the building on its own is larger than any location in Hitman Absolution.

“As we move through the year, we’ll have some details to share with you and we’ll keep you posted right here on the blog. We will only lift the lid on the game once we feel we’re ready to.”

Give me a Blood Money 2 and I'll be fine. I didn't dislike "Absolution" but it didn't feel like a hitman game.

As a longtime fan of this series, I skipped the last one because it was utter rubbish. If you want to make another splinter cell conviction, then do it. Quit trying to make everything the same. The game did not benefit from anything they added. It was fine how it was in the old days. You actually had to work for your kills and it felt great pulling it off. All it needed was some refinements like some AI improvements, maybe enhance the control to make it a bit less clunky, and update the graphics. That's it. We don't need hand-holding modes thrown in. We don't need a narrator barking up our ass around every turn. And we don't need another action game Conviction clone.

The more it's gonna be like Blood Money the better. I absolutely loved that game. I have yet to finish Absolution. I HATE that you cannot explore these levels in whatever way you want, as soon as you get that checkpoint, you cannot go back. f***......THAT....i needs my sandbox levels where i can freely roam around. The new one will have that and that is a great start. Also do not build the game around that Instinct s*** too much and i'll be happy.

I bought the HD re-issue of Hitman 1-2 for cheap and.man,I had forgotten what a mammoth of a game Hitman: Silent Assassin was. Holy sh1t,not only are the levels gigantic but they usually have multi-tiered ojectives. How could this series level and gameplay design have fallen so low?

Hitman developer IO Interactive has confirmed that the latest instalment in the series is due for a full reveal later in the year.

Though the new Hitman game was first mentioned in January 2014, little has been said of it since. Developer IO Interactive previously confirmed that the game will depict "a globetrotting Agent 47 at the prime of his career", and confirmed it will ship on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

Following a protracted silence, one fan asked IO Interactive via its official twitter account when the new game will ship, to which the studio replied "there's more info coming this year and we can't wait to share it".

— Hitman (@Hitman) January 12, 2015

According to comments made by IO Interactive last year, the new Hitman game will retain the "core" of the series, insofar as players can use a "wide range" of tools to take out a diverse group of targets on a global scale.

The game will run on a form of the Glacier 2 engine, which powered 2012's Hitman: Absolution.

This concept art is the only image of the new Hitman game revealed by IO Interactive

"We're packing in an extreme level of detail on the largest levels we have ever built for a Hitman game," IO Interactive stated at the time.

"We've adopted an open, non-linear level design approach to the game, ensuring the game will play out across huge, checkpoint-free, sandbox levels. Our aim is to create living, breathing, and believable levels which will allow gamers to play around with the AI to create those unique moments every fan of the Hitman franchise loves."

Contracts Mode, a mission-editor feature that allows players to create murder scenarios, will also return for the new Hitman game. Players will be able to create these challenges and then share them online.

"You will also be glad to hear that we have removed 47's magic pockets," the developer said. "We believe that's all we need to say about that subject."

Hitman Absolution, the last triple-A instalment in the series, was released in 2012. Since then, series co-developer Square Enix Montreal has been working on expanding the IP to mobile, and in April last year it shipped a puzzle game called Hitman Go, which was nominated by GameSpot as one of the best mobile games of 2014.

I hope the next Hitman game is as good as Blood Money was. It's still one of my favorite 360 games.

I didn't realize this will release this year. The again, I didn't realize this was a digital only episodic type of game. My interest has pretty much been obliterated.

Hitman multiplayer.

Two hitman (disguises created at character select screen) start out in random area's of a level. Each player is tasked with assassinating the same target. If one player hitman assassinates the other, killed hitman becomes police officer in one minute. Remaining hitman must change costumes to conceal identity and carry out the original objective.
