To set the record straight, we asked game director Mathijs de Jonge if Horizon Forbidden West was still on track to release this year, or if things had shifted away from that timeframe. "The development is on track,” de Jonge tells Game Informer. "The thing is, these are just strange times that we're all in and we have never finalized and shipped a game under these kinds of circumstances. So we are constantly calculating our schedules and looking at, ‘Okay, where are we?’ and ‘Are there any unforeseen things that might happen?’ We just want to be super confident when we announce the release date, that we're actually going to hit it. So we just need a little bit more time, and then we can come back with a final release date.”

Funny thing is that lighting that they are using on Aloy in the PS5 version seems to be a bit controversial, a lot of people want it toned down including myself. I think it's safe to say visually the game is taking advantage of PS5 nicely, probably about as much as a launch year game would have regardless of being cross gen or not.

I don't mind it. It's an artistic decision and different people may not feel the same about it.

Had there been no pandemic they’d probably release it within said launch year. They probably had this game in development from three to five years. And they’ve released games within or at launch before.

Although Forbidden West is also releasing for PS4, with development having begun on that console before continuing in parallel with its successor, it is undoubtedly meant to be played on Sony’s brand new and almost impossible to buy hardware. The big “wow moment” in its latest trailer comes when Aloy submerges herself into a tropical reef that’s teeming with neon coral, giant clouds of fish and the odd AI-powered alligator. It’s a signifier of both a newfound scale to her escapades and the sheer fidelity Guerrilla has lavished on its latest creation.

"Our engineers spent an incredible amount of time on the water rendering and wave techniques. They probably spent years on that," said Horizon Forbidden West game director Mathijs de Jonge in a new interview with GQ. "There’s so much detail we can put into San Francisco’s overgrown ruins. I don’t think many people have noticed but every strand is rendered individually," de Jonge continues, referencing the individual strands of moss permeating the ruins of California.

In Horizon Forbidden West, protagonist Aloy is leaving her former stomping grounds of Zero Dawn to journey westward to California. This is why de Jonge is talking about the wave technology and water rendering taking up such a large chunk of the development process: because it's basically encapsulating a large amount of the game's open-world map on the west coast of America.

Having discovered the story of her origins in Zero Dawn, what comes next is set to be a different kind of adventure. “You want to stay true to her character, but she has to evolve,” says McCaw. “As she journeys into the mysterious frontier of the Forbidden West, she is going to evolve and I think people are really going to like it.” Don’t just take his word for it though. Covid willing, you’ll be able to play what's sure to be the biggest game of 2021 come the holiday season. It will be an epic in every respect.

"I don't think the cross-generation development was limiting in any way," de Jonge said. "When we started with the concept of this game, we had so many great ideas that ended up being included - to the point that we didn't really think about hardware limitations or anything, we just wanted to design a really nice, unique experience for the player. An awesome adventure. That's how we also brainstormed all the quests and events the player is going to go through."

"I think that the big delta between these two consoles, apart from the 3D audio, quick loading and DualSense of course, is on the graphical side of things. On the PlayStation 5, we can add so much more detail graphically. We can see the tiny hairs on Aloy’s face, for example. You can also see a ton of detail from far away."

de Jonge continued by pointing out the moss growing on the rocks in the Horizon Forbidden West State of Play gameplay demo. According to him, each individual strand of moss is rendered individually on the PS5, and is just one example of how the PS5 takes the experience to a new level.

The cinematic lighting rig also benefits from the PS5's processing power, as it is allowed to be used during gameplay and cinematics, as opposed to just in cinematics on PS4.

Weird. I kinda like it. It's like cinema lighting, makes it easier to see the protag, and males sure they look their best at all times.

I'd much rather they de-stung-in-the-face-by-a-bee Aloy, lol.

I never even noticed her face looking "fat" until people started pointing it out, still doesn't bother me though. The thing with the lighting to me just makes her look a little bit like she's not part of the world, her hair always having the same lighting just stands out a bit to me. It's not a deal breaker but I think toning it down a little bit would be great.

Not sure how you didn't notice the face. I watch people's faces a lot though, so maybe it is just personal, lol. Its not in proportion to the rest of her. Of course,, the proportions in the first game were off too.

Still, I know I'm not the only one who noticed it, hence the memes.

Maybe they’re going more Chibi-esque to appeal to the Japanese market?

Some angles she looks ok. Others it looks a little wider.

It just didn't stand out to me, I'm not really checking out the girls anyway though LOL. I know a lot of people made it a thing though so it's definitely different it just didn't stand out to me. In some ways I kind of ignore the cinematics a bit I was more interested in the gameplay and her back is to the camera during that.

Aloy looks like she put on a little more weight here

But in a different angle and lighting, she looks fine.

I don't like that Denise Richards looking one either. It doesn't fit. Aloy doesn't have to look different (her actress, who she mostly resembles looks fine). She doesn't have to be "hot", she just should not look weird, lol. And she looks weird to me. Realistic does not equal ugly. I suppose it can, but damn, it's an entertainment medium. That face should look lean. She is a nimble explorer and warrior, not some basket weaver. I don't know why it's so off-putting to me lol.

Of course, my main issue with Aloy in the first game was that she was a pretty boring protagonist. Hopefully the writing is better in this one. I love the concept around it all, and the overall story is neat.

I would prefer if they made Aloy more visually appealing either but I don't see that much of an issue with her now. Just looks like she put on some weight. Maybe she was a couch potato for the past 8 months since the end of the first one.

That people thought God of War and Horizon were releasing this year is laughable. I know the studios were optimistic but let be real, with covid still raging and alot of studios still working remotely, we'll be lucky if the larger studios hit their release dates in 2022.
