Horizon: Zero Dawn

I'm playing through for a third time, this time on Easy. I'm at Level 31 or so. Having lots of fun. Just finished off a Thunderjaw.

I love the story in this game. I love how it looks, too. I can always come back to this game and have a good time. I don't know what people are talking about, when they say SP games are "one and done."

Had a $10 rewards certificate so I managed to get the game for free from GameStop. I am going to sink into it after I make it through Spider-Man.

I totally agree, there are plenty of single player games worth playing through again.

I also have to say this game looks sharper than many native 4K games I've seen, it looks cleaner than RDR2 on the One X and many of the textures seem better as well. It's not as deep and I'm sure there aren't as many systems running in the background as RDR2 but I don't think anyone can pretend that this game doesn't look sharper overall.

Playing through this now, since I finished Spider-Man. I am roughly 5 hours in and I am enjoying it for the most part but it also feels a little hollow to me. I need to keep going with it, though.

Really? I wouldn’t call it hollow at all. It’s a beautifully rendered, extremely well designed game and more importantly it’s a completely original IP in a time where we just get clones and sequels for the most part.

I wonder if he means hollow as in barren space. Beautiful indeed but a wide open map with very little in between.

It is a great new IP and I spent a little less time than him but it seemed empty and never grabbed me. But I do plan to go back to finish it. It got praise for a reason.

I loved walking through the space rather than fast travel. I guess we all have different ideas of "hollow." To me, a constant barrage of icons and "things to do" feels hollow. I like the more edited approach of Horizon. They didn't overdo it like most open-world games do. Sometimes less is more.

I have noticed that a lot of people who really adore Zelda (I think Eric is one?) have a hard time with Horizon, because Zelda is their comparison or reference point.

Or maybe it's just that the setting and characters don't "click" for you. That happens.

It’s hard to explain. I think it’s a well-made game, beautiful and fluid but it feels, for lack of a better word, soulless, to me. Giant Bomb gave it a 5/5 last year but it didn’t make their top 10 games list for the year. Moreover, it was nominated for several awards at TGA last year and came out empty handed. My thoughts on the game kind of translate to that: objectively it is a great game but it doesn’t move the needle, in my opinion.

It happens. Some games, while great, just don’t click, and some games that aren’t so great, do click. I don’t mean to talk s*** about the game because it’s fundamentally great - it just doesn’t resonate with me.

It’s not necessarily because I liked Zelda so much either.

Different strokes. I loved it, but I guess I've made that clear by now, lol.

Games that others would name at GOTY often strike me as fairly boring. I think it's a very individual thing, what resonates and what doesn't.

I am restarting my save file. I first tried playing it after another open world.

I am roughly 7 hours in and I feel better about the game now than I did a few months ago.

I actually like Aloy. She’s immediately likeable - make her the martyr immediately - great choice. Her dialogue actually feels sincere, too. I commend Guerilla for pushing dialogue that actually makes sense for branching narratives.

The combat IS satisfying and challenging, too. I am still figuring out my arsenal but getting through my first Cauldron was great.

A couple things that I would like to see in the sequel:

Climb anywhere - the yellow pegs are distracting and in a post BotW era, climbing everywhere should be feasible.

Better camera angles. Dodging can get wonky and a lot of times, you never really know where you’re dodging. A zoomed out camera would help.

Simplify resource gathering. There’s a ton of crap to collect and craft so you’re never short of supplies but the process of crafting arrows, for instance, is tedious. If they’re going to make the resources so plentiful, just auto create the arrows.

I am enjoying the game, though. The graphics are quite good. I am on regular PS4 and it’s neat.

The sound and OST are great too. Subtle, similar to BotW.

I’d like to continue playing. I hope I don’t get sucked into The Division 2.

Yeah I'd like for all open world games to start allowing you to climb wherever you want, it's made the last two Assassin's Creed games more enjoyable experiences as well. I'd also like them to allow us to convert more types of robots into mounts, especially the bigger ones, having them on your team is cool but riding them and having direct control would be great. Would also like them to allow under water swimming and exploration of sunken areas, maybe some rideable robot dolphins and whales and robot sharks that attack etc.

I never did get to the DLC for this game. I'd like to for sure but I also wanted to wait until I had a 4k TV to play this again. Hoping to do so at some point this year then I'll probably just play through the entire game again.

Were you bored playing tomb raider, Assassins Creed(The last 2) , Far cy 3+, etc? Cause it is very similar to those games.

I'm still curious if they are going to actually make it a true PC port as far as higher end assets etc or just port the PS4 version and call it a day. They said over and over that the engine was optimized for 30fps etc. I do wonder if it does get upgraded assets and the engine is changed to allow for 60fps if the PS5 will get an upgrade for the game.

The amount of people complaining about a three year old exclusive getting ported to PC is insane. Yea I wouldn't want one of my favorite Playstation games being available to more people plus giving the devs more money so they can continue making games I love. No way.
