House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said video games could contribute to future mass shootings when asked about it in a television interview on Sunday morning. Appearing on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures" in the wake of mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, McCarthy was asked about how to understand factors contributing to a shooting.

"This may be a place where we could find this ahead of time," said McCarthy who discussed ways to detect future shooters.

"The idea that these video games that dehumanize individuals to have a game of shooting individuals," continued McCarthy, "I've always felt that it's a problem for future generations and others. We've watched studies show what it does to individuals, and you look at these photos of how it took place, you can see the actions within video games and others.

McCarthy added that he wanted to "get all the facts."

"But what I'd like to do is get all the facts, are there indications? There are times before that we have found this," he said.

McCarthy's comments came after a mass shooting at an El Paso Walmart left 20 people dead and 26 injured and before a shooting spree early Sunday at an entertainment district in Dayton, Ohio left at least nine dead and 16 hurt.

The New York Times reported last year that there was little evidence to suggest there was any link between video games and mass shootings.

Among other evidence, the New York Times cites a 2011 court opinion from conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who wrote in Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association, "Psychological studies purporting to show a connection between exposure to violent video games and harmful effects on children do not prove that such exposure causes minors to act aggressively.

lol politicians

These things always make me laugh. They say shooting games desensitise us but tgere are 10's of millions of people playing shooters and only a very few people do mass shootings and very few of tgem cite games as a reason.

Did it ever occur to them that games are irrelevant and these people are just f***ed up and would have done it anyway.

These out of touch republicans never acknowledge that millions of people around the world play violent videogames DAILY...and yet America seems to be the melting pot of mass shootings.

OUT.OF.TOUCH.WITH.REALITY.

Its like driving down the street in a Prius and blaming the speed limit for not beating a Ferrari in a quarter mile.

I love how these guys who have never played a video game in their lives blame them for crap like this. You know what people my age and older played with? toy guns that looked mostly real and actually gave you something physical to point at another person, we used our imagination and pretended to shoot someone standing right in front of us, not some fictional digital person but a real person made of flesh and blood, usually someone we knew and cared about.

As others have said there are hundreds of millions of people all over the world who play games, if they actually encouraged gun violence we'd be having multiple mass shootings every day here in the US with our easy access to guns.

It's both sides of the aisle.

Why stop there?

Violent movies....lets blame them too!

Porn turns people into rapists guys. Trust me. These are facts.
But those depict real people acting out real things on other real people. That is a stark contrast to obviously not real video games.

Honestly, who here has acted out a bit of a movie? Actions and/or dialogue. I know I have many times.

Who does the same with video games? i never have.

You've never said "Come here!" when pulling your girlfriend in for a kiss? Never threw a water hadouken in a pool? Never beat up a hooker in front of a cop and then carjack an old lady's car and run over that cop and trigger a six star wanted level?

Those countries don't have video games I guess

Bit hard for UK to have mass shootings. Been alot of stabbing in London in 2019, though.

Maybe the UK don't play shooters and play more stabby games, like Witcher 3 or For Honour.

This is what happens when a simple mind tries to grasp a complex problem.

I'm pretty sure these politicians are just looking for a scapegoat so they can ignore the real issues. There have been countless studies done on this and there's simply no correlation. A lot of shooters just happen to be young people, and a lot of young people happen to play videogames.

The shooters also drive cars, maybe driving cars leads to mass shootings? That's the logic they use.

These are the kinds of people that would tell a journalist that Dungeons & Dragons is a satanic cult.

Facts and logic aren't really his strong suit. At least he's consistent I guess.

I guess the El Paso shooter referenced COD in his manifesto. Of course nobody bothered to actually read what it said. He's actually telling people not to "play out a COD fantasy". It has nothing to do with being influenced by video games.

I think the stability of the typical American family isn't what it used to be. Absent fathers is a thing, but with a variety of reasons. Not just deadbeat dads, but maybe loss of custody.

Of course, it then goes into scapegoating people who have nothing to do with this.

There is a whole host of issues but divorce rates are high in all western countries so it's hard to place the blame there.
