How Xbox One did a 360 this gen.

360 is a complete circle, meaning you are back where you started. 180 means that you are facing the opposite direction. You guys are really trying to stick it to my OCD hard today!

I guess I'll have to just take it as the Xbox One "360" lands back where they were with Xbox 360. That is the only way to make sense of the title.

I mean 360 as in back where they started but better!

Is xbox really any better off right now? I mean I guess they dug themselves mostly out of the hole they'd put themselves in at the start of the gen, but I don't know if I'd say xbox is in a better position now than they were last gen. Xbox's biggest problem remains software. Sony absolutely wiped the floor with xbox when it comes to games, and 7+ studio acquisitions later, I still doubt this next gen'll be much different in that regard...

Yes. Forget last gen going into this gen. The real change has been the re-focus and re-messaging. Start of this gen it was all multimediia box, TV, anti-consumer ideas/features. Now, leading into next-gen, they don't even think TV let alone say it, they bought like 9 new dev studios, and they are being more consumer friendly with things like smart delivery. And to top it off, they have the more powerful console.

So, yeah....I think them doing a full 360 is correct, atleast interms of focus and messaging.

Can't argue there, I just hope they make more big, awesome games I'm interested in this go around. As of now I'm not even sure I'll pick up an XSX...

Yes. That'll be clearer in July. I still expect Sony to sell more consoles worldwide. As a gaming platform, it's going to expand and is in position to have a much higher approval rating by it's customers. We'll see that their investment in content, developer tools and services is higher than any single company has invested at one time. Counting T-flops and studios is just a distraction until they pull back the curtains. I think those numbers people keep mentioning under-sell their position for next gen.

Content/software takes investment and time. The talent comes with the investment. Investment turned around in 2018. It'll be a full year or 2 before they hit their stride but there's a lot on the horizon.

I agree, and I'm cautiously optimistic. I still think xbox has a few shortcomings that I honestly don't see being filled by any of the new additions though, and it's a bit of a bummer. I'm really hoping that I'll be intrigued by what ever it is the initiative is working on, though going on the rumors I'm not particularly giddy with excitement about it. Fingers crossed playground's RPG team delivers...

That is a problem . As far as I can tell none of these new studios are bringing anything new. Halo, Forza, Perfect Dark, Fable, Psychnauts 2, Hellblade 2, Obsidian is working on a familiar title, Minecraft, Gears content, etc.

That is going by rumours, though.

Considering all this first year stuff will be on X1X and X1 it might be best to just wait.

Some of the IPs mentioned would be new games in everything but name. Most people couldn't tell you what genre Perfect Dark is in. If Pillars of Eternity goes from isometric to a Skyrim type of RPG, its not the same game. Just like Spiderman and God of War were new games in everything but name, expecting the same with Perfect Dark, Fable and Pillars.

In the end, I dont feel that Sony and Microsoft will have the same strengths in content. If people prefer mature narrative driven games, Sony will have more of them. Western RPG studios aren't known for linear stories. More about choice and consequence. Xbox studios will have more variety. Sonys will have more of those big, mature narrative driven games. It's ok that they'll have different portfolios. The key for Xbox is nailing quality regardless of genre. They have the talent and are providing enough additional resources and support to deliver there.

Only works if they are different enough. God of War isn't a new game.

Felt 100% different to me...but sure that's subjective. You can have innovation and evolution under an old IP. On contrary, you can have new IPs that feel derivative.

I understand why people get excited for new IPs. New stories, characters and world building to explore. I just don't see Pillars, Fable or Perfect Dark to be restrictive in that sense. I'll add in Battletech/Mech Assult if they can figure out the license and reboot. Plenty of lore which has barely been touched upon with the console games.

Forza 7 felt different to Forza 6. CODMW feels different than BLOPS 4. It has to be very different. If all Fable ends up being is Fable with deeper RPG sysstems then it is just Fable. God of War is still Kratos, still hack n slash, sill telling similr stories, still uses similarr systems. It had a different presentation, better writing, and was slowed down a bit. Great game, but still just God of War.

Forza Horizon is a new game because it is vastly different everywhere.

I'm not disagreeing that they could be new in all but name. I'm just saying they need to be very different to be that.

No, they did a 180 to get back to the 360. It's clear as day.

Remember when people said the Xbox One was going to be called Xbox 720.

I won't mind at all if playground's game is Fable, I'd just hope they create something with compelling gameplay. I enjoyed Fable 1 & 2, not so much 3, but if thats what they're making and the execute it right I'd be very interested in that. I will say I'm very much hoping that The initiative's game is NOT a Perfect Dark game though. Xbox has more than enough FPS as it is and I'm really hoping that they're getting the opportunity to develop something of their own. Based on the strengths of the talent they've hired, my fingers are crossed for a 3rd person action game, hopefully with a strong melee component, a genre I think xbox is lacking in...

Well they have gears, Hellblade, Fable, possibly Obsidians game for that 3rd person action game, the last 3 likely melee focused. I know what you mean, though, like a God of War.

I just want new stuff. Most of my favourite games a gen are new stuff. Forza Motorsport and PGR on the OG Xbox. Last gen Gears of War, Motorstorm, and Demon Souls. This gen For Honor, Destiny, Horizon Zero Dawn. Notice how this gen has no Xbox exclusive.

A re-imagined Fable or ressurecting old IPs is fine, usually. Not a great a idea for a company whos biggest criticism for the last 5 years has been a lack of new exclusives. Foix that first, then bring back some old IPs.

Killer Instinct, Ori, Forza Horizon, and Quantum Break were all pretty damn good in my opinion.

The way it plays is completely new.
Right Only shares story and character.

Yes, very much talking something more akin to God of War than Gears of War. Gears is a shooter, I wouldn't call it an adventure game at all and while the last 2 games have improved it, the melee is still borderline useless. To me, if hellblade is as close as we get to what I'm looking for then that is a sorry state of affairs, nor do I think whatever Obsidian is working on would fit the bill. I dunno, I can't say I really have a lot of faith in the new studios to make anything I'll personally be interested in. I would love if Playground's open world action/RPG was a new IP, I just won't be upset if it's Fable either, but Playgrounds action team and the initiative are really the only new studios who's output I have any real hope for, I've never really been impressed with anything from the other ones personally... :really:

I won't be upset if one or two Are resurrected old IPs. The issue is that it seems like none of them are doing new IPs.

Yeay, calling Gears action & adventure is a bit of stretch. I just think MS may think they have that general area covered.

Obsidian made one of my favourite RPGs ever, Fallout New Vegas.

Agree on Ori and Forza Horizon. But Forza H and KI aren't new.

Wasn’t saying that they are new, just mentioning good games. Although, KI may as well been new considering it had been 17 years since the last one.

Would you put any in your top 5 games of this gen?
