Illumiroom maybe returning?

I thought this was really cool actually, I'd like to have this as a reactive mood lighting when playing music on the console too.

This will be a tough sell, it's probably not going to sell well at all.

Most people don't even have 5.1, how is anyone going to be convinced to set up a projector?

I already use a video projector, I wouldve really liked this tech over kinect (which i have no interest in). But I think the cost factor would prevent them from releasing at the consumer level.

It requires Kinect, however the Kinect needs to be positioned with the projector facing the TV. So lucky you if you got the X1 and Illumiroom because you'd have 2 (two) Kinects.

;)

Not happening. It's the stepping stone project for Fortaleza.
Agree.

It is very much a proof of concept/cool tech demo that isn't at a practical consumer product level.

As an aside, some of the new NIN tour visuals and this music video really show off some the creative potential.

You could do it with just the one Kinect. Once you map the room you don't need it to re-map anything continuously. It's still cumbersome to map the room in the first place though. Asking ppl to move their Kinects back and forth isn't a great idea from a consumer experience, ergonomics pov.

I know an extremely cheap way for MS games to give an even better level of immersion. Officially support the Oculus Rift.

Also, from what I've read about Fortaleza, it is only the social aspect of gaming not the actual games themselves. And it is vaporware until we see anything concrete. Oculus Rift dev kits are in the hands of thousands of people now and will be shipping the consumer version next year.

Support for a likely $300 peripheral is cheap?

They aren't manufacturing the hardware or developing games for it though. That's like saying supporting HDMI is really expensive because TVs can cost $5000. All they have to do is add support for it to be recognized as in input device and video output. Then any game that gets developed for the Rift would be supported on xbox one. The risk is extremely low and reward could be very high.

The Rift is USB and HDMI. The xbox one hardware already has those i/o devices and it would be easy/cheap to implement

Sorry I misconstrued your statement of cheap as cheap for the consumer instead of cheap for Microsoft, my bad.

Ahh, I see. No worries. I'd really like to see rift support for the xbox one and just think MS supporting it would be a win/win. They could get a ton of extra sales on XBLA for people wanting different cheap VR experiences.

I agree, I heard that the PS4 might support the OR, if X1 did too then it would be great, more 3rd party companies are likely to make games that are multiplat than invest in games that only one platform would get (providing they are not being paid to be exclusive)

I get the complete opposite impression after reading the article, compared to thread title. I had been saying Illumiroom is not a marketable product all along, now Xbox leaders confirm the obvious.

Oculous Rift is also doubtful cuz hey, when has MS ever supported 3rd party peripherals? I just don't see it.

Most likely, is still the vision in MS's own roadmap from a couple years back, which indicated that their own VR/AR glasses were the end goal, with 720 (one) being a mere vehicle to get there.
