Inside China: Nuclear submarines capable of widespread attack on U.S.

Chinese state-run media revealed for the first time this week that Beijing’s nuclear submarines can attack American cities as a means to counterbalance U.S. nuclear deterrence in the Pacific.
On Monday, leading media outlets including China Central TV, the People’s Daily, the Global Times, the PLA Daily, the China Youth Daily and the Guangmin Daily ran identical, top-headlined reports about the “awesomeness” of the People's Liberation Army navy’s strategic submarine force.

This is the first time in 42 years since the establishment of our navy’s strategic submarine force that we reveal on such a large scale the secrets of our first-generation underwater nuclear force,” the Global Times said in a lengthy article titled “China for the First Time Possesses Effective Underwater Nuclear Deterrence against the United States.”
The article features 30 photos and graphics detailing, among other things, damage projections for Seattle and Los Angeles after being hit by Chinese nuclear warheads and the deadly radiation that would spread all the way to Chicago.
China’s sub fleet is reportedly the world’s second-largest, with about 70 vessels. About 10 are nuclear-powered, and four or more of those are nuclear ballistic submarines capable of launching missiles.

Chinese calculations for nuclear attacks on the U.S. are chillingly macabre.
“Because the Midwest states of the U.S. are sparsely populated, in order to increase the lethality, [our] nuclear attacks should mainly target the key cities on the West Coast of the United States, such as Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego,” the Global Times said.
“The 12 JL-2 nuclear warheads carried by one single Type 094 SSBN can kill and wound 5 million to 12 million Americans,” the Global Times reported.
China also has developed land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles — notably the DF-31A, which has a range of 7,000 to 7,500 miles.
“If we launch our DF 31A ICBMs over the North Pole, we can easily destroy a whole list of metropolises on the East Coast and the New England region of the U.S., including Annapolis, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Portland, Baltimore and Norfolk, whose population accounts for about one-eighth of America’s total residents,” the Global Times said.

Global Times is an English web site in China.

There is no such article on their web site with that title.. if you google the title, you only end up getting back The Washington Times article, and about 1,000 conservative blogs linking to it. The graphic they alleged came from Global Times doesn't link in any way back to the Global Times.

Actual articles on GlobalTimes about China discussing their nuclear subs/programs, from the day that they allegedly published some long scary "to attack America!" article:

http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/820840.shtml

Just an infographic showing their capabilities... no scary anti-American propaganda. Apparently China did detail their fleet. Here's an op ed about it saying it's China trying to be more US like:

http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/820956.shtml

Here's one about a joint project between the US and China building a nuclear security center:

http://www.globaltimes.cn/NEWS/tabi...-China-US-nuclear-security-center-begins.aspx

Construction on a nuclear security center jointly financed by China and the United States began in Beijing on Tuesday.

Construction of the Center of Excellence on Nuclear Security is scheduled to be completed by 2015, according to Wang Yiren, vice chairman of the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA).

Located in the Changyang science and technology park in the southwestern outskirts of Beijing, the center will be equipped with environmental labs, response force exercise facilities, test sites for physical protection, and buildings for technology display and training, experiments and scientific research.

I googled several phrases with site:globaltimes.cn in the query and got no results.

You are welcome to do what The Washington Times did and try to find an actual source for this, good luck:

https://www.google.com/#q=nuclear+site:globaltimes.cn

Hint: The Washington Times is a propaganda machine created by a conservative guy from Korea.. they are rampant liars.

Seriously it's pretty incredible. Washington Times publishes this story 19 hours ago.

Google a sentence from it, allegedly coming from Global Times:

https://www.google.com/search?q="Because+the+Midwest+states+of+the+U.S.+are+sparsely+populated"

You'll see The Washington Times article.. and then dozens of conservative sites and blogs.. many of them posting at almost the exact same time.

Not a single one of them linking to any actual original source of this information. How convenient.

bunz you are stalking me.. lol

I will prove you wrong.. lol

They published photos of their nuclear fleet and some info apparently.. and they did it for the same reason the US and other countries do it (hell, they have parades for nukes in Russia still.)

Might have even discussed capability to strike the US.. not sure how you can "prove me wrong" because everything I said is a fact. That article is not on the Global Times website.. the image from the article that they source as being from global times can't be found on their web site via google's reverse image search.. and nothing from the article actually traces back to the Global Times.

The "info" they published might have even contained everything said in the Washington Times article.. but.. considering it can't be found.. and considering.. they are a propaganda machine for some weirdo right-wing extremists.. I'm not buying it.

Either way.. pointless. If they did hype up their nuke capabilities it's for the same reason the US goes on on and about their military capability.. there is an epic crapton of such material published about just how many people we could kill with our weapons, and it is partly detailed publicly as a deterrent, just like that op ed says.

And no I'm not stalking you.. saw the thread.. saw it was Washington Times.. spent all of 2-3 minutes doing some google searches then typed that up.

U.S. Submarine sonar man, "When Russian subs comes out, we can hear them from miles away. When Chinese submarines comes out, we have to throw down our earphones cause you can hear them from an OCEAN away!"

Haven't read thoroughly through yet, but I'm calling it as a sensationalized title. China is more than welcome to become a more competent military force like America, but the author of the article of his own accord adds "capable of widespread attack on US" as to wrongfully imply that China has any such intentions.

And what exactly do they think the US and its allies have? I've always hated sabre rattling.

Have nuclear weapons grown in destruction since WW2? Do they contain more tons of explosions? I saw the footage of the Tsar in school a long time ago, and I recalled the teacher saying that they actually had to scale it back(I think it was 40,000 tons) because it was too much.

I just wonder what the consequences would be if they did attack the western coast. With all the doomsdays of fukushima it seems the oceans would be really, really screwed.

Umm yeah....

For ex. the Trident II D5 sea launched SLBM (Sea Launched Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile) carried by the U.S. Ohio Class SSBN (Submarine carrying ballistic missiles, nuclear) each have a range of 10,000 miles (which means the Ohios don't even need to leave its port, it can launch its missiles while tied up at pier and still hit anywhere in the world), can carry up to 12 MIRV (Multiple Independent Re-entry Vehicles, read, 12 nuclear bombs. But under SALT II, this is limited to 8 ). Each of those MIRV's have a yield of around 300-400 KT (kilo tons, depending on the type of warhead carried), which means it can blow up a good size city very very good! Either that, it can carry a single 5 MT (Megaton) warhead...That one will instantly "Vap" a city the size of NY right off the map of the earth....In comparison, Little Boy, the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima, has a yield of only 16KT....

And again, Ohio's can do this while still tied up at the pier....Chinese subs have to do it while trying to sneak themselves to the west coast while announcing their arrivals for everyone to hear. Ohio are STILL the quietest subs in the world. So quiet it has never been tracked ever by anyone else! And Ohio's carries 24 Tridents...Each with 8 warheads....I'll let you calculate how many cities that equals (and then take that number and multiply it by 12 cause there are still 12 Ohio's still in service. The first 4 now have been converted into cruise missile subs).

Chinese subs....."I give up"...................

So what you are saying is that basically life has turned into Metal Gear?

Jesus. Nanomachines! Please let it all be a VR.

I wish I was kidding...But Ohio class SSBN is very very real.......At any given time, at least 4 are our on "doomsday patrol"...2 are ready at any given notice, 4 just returned and need replenishment. And the rest on maintenance of various degree......That's A LOT of bombs available at any given time here...And Ohio's turn around time is very short cause they have two crews, Gold and Blue, each alternate when the ship come in. This means that unless they are in port needing huge maintenance, like nuclear refuel (which only happens every 15 years), Ohio's spend most of the time in the water....That's a really scary thought!

Which is an interesting prospect. Batman getting involved in military matters..
