Is the next generation coming too soon?

Microsoft and Sony are a little over a month away from releasing their next generation consoles. For Microsoft, it’s been eight years since the Xbox 360 was released. For Sony, it’s been seven years since the PlayStation 3 was released. Both consoles are a bit past the usual time frame between console releases. Typically, there’s five to six years between generations. Since that’s the case, and we’re past the traditional transition window, why does it feel like we really don’t need the next generation just yet?

Games like the universally acclaimed The Last of Us and Grand Theft Auto 5 show us that the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are still graphical powerhouses. Both games have churned out graphics that are the best we’ve ever seen on a console. And while there is some limits on the Xbox 360 because it uses DVD, when you get a game looking like Grand Theft Auto 5 does, the Xbox 360 loading textures is a minor inconvenience. Granted, games at the end of a console’s life are always like night and day graphics wise when compared to launch games. At the same time, when the next generation is on the horizon, the launch games at the beginning of the ‘next’ generation are superior, graphically, to the games at the end of the current generation. I’m not really seeing that this time around.

Don’t get me wrong, games on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 do look better than the games on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but they’re not leaps and bounds like they have been in the past. Let’s take a look at Call of Duty: Ghosts: the game looks decent on the current generation consoles; the footage we’ve seen for the next-gen consoles is a bit underwhelming when looking for that graphical jump. What is the reason? Is it because of the hardware? Is it because the game is basically a port? It’s not only with Ghosts, either. This seems to be an across the board occurrence for most titles.

Games like Ryse and Infamous: Second Son definitely shine, and I would say Killer Instinct has graphical qualities that are not possible on current generation systems. The rest, not so much. Sure, the rest of the next gen titles look good, but are you telling me the graphics in Dead Rising 3 are truly next gen graphics? I don’t meant to single out Dead Rising 3 and Capcom’s accomplishments with the game. The features of Dead Rising 3 are truly next-gen; the scope of the game, seemingly never-ending world, uncountable zombies and the online implementation are what I would consider only possible on next-gen consoles.

I know, I know, it’s not all about the graphics. Is it about media options? I mean, what can’t the current consoles do that the next generation consoles can? I guess the multi-tasking features is one. What else? Uploading game clips to the web? That’s definitely something I’ll be using. Kinect has some cool new features that I will be using, such as the RF array and “always on” voice to control my living room. The PlayStation 4’s media features are pretty much on par with current gen. I’m still not seeing why we really need next-gen consoles right now.

Has this been a next-generation rat race of sorts? Did Sony and Microsoft both know they were gearing up for a new system launches, and now it is a matter of trying to beat each other out of the gate? To me, it seems that’s the case, at least partly. Both machines are great. Both machines are advancements from their current machines. We know it ultimately is a business decision that both next-gen consoles are launching this November. Sales are obviously slowing and the bottom line is what’s most important. I’m ok with the new machines and I’ll be picking up at least one of them. But there’s something about them that doesn’t have me as excited as I was when the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were nearing launch. I can’t put my finger on it. I just don’t know why I’m not as excited for this ‘next’ generation as I was for the last ‘next’ generation.

Shouldn’t I be more excited for the next-gen to start?

Until next-gen games stop coming out on current-gen systems, I don't think next-gen is quite here yet.

When an avg joe goes to the store and sees there are two copies of Battlefield 4, one is on current-gen which he currently owns, and the other is on next-gen, the question will be, what's the difference?

Game shop rep will say, well graphics and 64 players. Then the avg joe will say, how much is a next-gen system? Game shop rep will say, PS4 at $399 and X1 at $499.

Avg joe will probably say...what the hell and pick up a copy of current-gen Battlefield 4.

This is just my opinion. Same will go for COD Ghosts, etc. I truly don't think we're going to be in next-gen till holiday 2014, and that might be pushing it because until there's a game, a blockbuster AAA game announced that's ONLY on next-gen, I don't think people are going to rush out to get the next-gen systems as much as we think.

Great opinion piece!

I'm definitely ready for the next generation of gaming consoles. This last console generation has gone on for a loooooooooong time. However, it doesn't seem like it has overstayed its welcome. There are still games for the 360 and PS3 that I want to play over the next year. Even some of my bying choices over the next few months will be tough as I have to decide to buy a game like Arkham Origins or save that money for a game like Killzone: ShadowFall or Dead Rising 3. I'm ready for the next gen to start, but i'm holding on to current consoles for the great games still to come.

I know for myself, the fact that much of the multiplatform titles I like to play are cross gen makes things easier for me. I've already invested in next gen consoles, so I'm just waiting for upgraded version. You're right though, that the average consumer may not see the benefit in investing 4-500 this early for better graphics unless they just have to play a certain exclusive.

When I see stuff like The Division, I'm excited for the next gen. The launch titles though, aren't as good as what we had the last time.

This gen went on too long. Next gen isn't too soon, it is too late.

As for last of Us and being a graphics powerhouse, Meh. Thinks like Red dead redemption, and sleeping dogs are better. Last of Us is just another super linear offering from ND, and as much as I'm loving GTA 5, some of the texture stuff is beyond awful.

I am with you though, Plainview. I am just not excited. I think it is more to do with games for me. Why we got a half assed Next gen forza ? people can defend it all they want but it should have weather. Multilayered paint work is not substitute for it. Nor is it rally something most will even notice. We also get huge draw distances that are wasted on most tracks. Why no PGR, or motorstorm ? Why aren't games like Titanfall and Infamous actual launch titles ? Why is everything seemingly open world ? Plus it doesn't help that a lot of the game are cross generational . They also have way to big an emphasis on second screen crap and F2P mediocrity.

The more I think of next gen. The more I feel I could do without it.

I would've held off for a year simply due to the amount of big game releases that will contend with both the X1 and PS4. I got a feeling that we'll see just as many people opting to stick with their current consoles simply because of the releases planned. GTAV has made a fortune already, South Park Stick of Truth is on the horizon, and there are still exclusive games bound for release on the PS4 and X1. It'll be a while before we see a real jump on the nexgen consoles and there's enough juice left in the tank for curren gen to last at least another year of mainstream attention. I myself still have a ton of games to play on the 360. Dishonored, Gears of War Judgement, Rayman Legends, GTAV, Fable Anniversary, Loco Cycle, South Park Stick of Truth, Halo 4, Assassin's Creed 3, Far Cry 3, Bioshock Infinite, Charlie Murder, etc. These are games I simply intend to buy, the backlog I have alone is pretty mind boggling. At the end of the day, nexgen is too soon for me, and it'll be a while before I ever intend to upgrade any hardware. Unless I get a big wad of cash from the lottery, my 360 remains the ultimate bastion for my gaming entertainment.

Admittedly, I felt like Sony/MS are jumping too soon (it'll be better if they hold off at least one or 2 more years before releasing the next-gen). But then, I thought MS did a great job with Xbox 360, despite the fact that it came out only 4 years after Original Xbox was released. 360 has changed a lot, I mean A LOT, since launch. By the next 2 to 4 years, I'm sure the graphic on PS4/XOne will be vastly different than currently generations. Not only that but I just hope next gens will last us for at least 10+ years.

That is what I have been trying to communicate to these mother-- I mean,to my fellow forum goers. 2015 would've been perfect for the new gen to roll in. But the politics of greed spoke first and the band just played on.

I think it's the right time, console fatigue is just bout setting in. We've had the XB360 for what 8 years now, a pretty unprecedented amount of time for a console and its age is finally starting to show. Had the question been asked say 2-3 years ago and it would have been a resounding yes.

It's obvious the next gen consoles have been in the making for a few years, but to me it seems Sony and Specially Microsoft have RUSHED IT trying to get the console out on time.

You would think they would have a release date set from years ago wouldn't you ? Don't they plan this sort of stuff when they first start to make the console, or is release date, features of the console, games coming out and price and the amount of cosnoles they can make all planned out, or they leave those parts for the last minute.

Sony, seems every single launch they can't get any of their BIG first party games to release with their console. Also there is always console shortages. Why can't they start to manufacture them a lot earlier and plan the games to come out earlier as well ?

With Microsoft, it's like they have put this whole thing together this year only, they have been running around like headless chooks, changing everything last minute and lucky to have enough consoles for everyone. I reckon they weren't originally planning on releasing the X1 so early, but had to becuase of what Sony did.

To me Sony's seemed a lot more planned, but still can't get their big games released at launch for their new console.

I wish the next generation waited another years just so the power boost could be bigger, but I'm glad Dark Souls 3 and FFXV are now going to be next gen. I'm excited when are finally getting rid of the old, old, old, 8-year-old consoles.

I dont think it's too soon, it's just about the right time but i am a little disappointed with the power these new consoles are offering and the games shown so far. after all these years, i expected more raw power. these consoles will start looking dated to mid range gaming pc's in a couple of years.

and speaking of the games shown so far, among the launch ones, even the best offerings on both consoles - ryse (x1) and killone 4 (ps4) don't look jaw droppingly stunning to me. good looking games but this is supposed to be a generational leap, i have seen bigger leaps before (like ps1/n64 >>dc)

I'm trying to see if Astro will come in here and educate us on why Dead Rising 3 doesn't look next gen.

This gen went on too long, by at least 2 years, if not 3. I fear that next-gen will do the same as I've read Sony and MS are planning for a 10 year cycle. Although if SteamBox or similar platforms start to do well this could change.

They must hit a certain graphical fidelity for me to consider it next gen. It doesn't have to be anywhere near highend, but the games should have decent textures at 1080p without sacrificing gameplay or scope.

I figure so long as they can match XB1/PS4 and allow game modding they could have a real winner on their hands.

I have to agree here. Heck, I find the new Tomb Raider taking a dump over the Last of Us graphically.

Personally, I think next gen took too long, but I am glad it is finally here. I will probably keep my Xbox 360 for another year to have them side by side. But after that, it's all next gen for me.
