Is the X still worth it?

Gentleman, I've been away for a while. Moved with a woman and things went south, now I'm hitting reset years later. I've no Xbox in years and I'm really looking to get back into it, is the X worth it still? Or is Project Scarlett really happening? I see on Amazon that the One X is discontinued except for bundle deals which I don't really want. Before I drop the money on it, I'd like some game from the more wiser Unioners. Hope you all have been well, I really missed this place!

Edit: I was recently gifted a 4k TV because my ex broke my old TV and left me without one, so yes, I have a new 4kTV sitting in the box waiting I just haven't set it up yet.

It may be if you have no game console and want to take advantage of the 4k player in it. Then wait for the next gen and trade it in or sell it.

It’ll be a pretty good investment because the controllers will work with the next Xbox as well as any other games you purchase.

Might want to wait till e3 to see if it’ll get a price drop and or look for deals at slickdeals site, then. If your a vet or serving member of the military then there’s one deal at the moment https://slickdeals.net/f/13118854-a...deExpiredSearch:Control&src=SiteSearchV2Algo1 but there have been some cheaper ones, on sale, that have recently expired https://slickdeals.net/f/13107097-1...deExpiredSearch:Control&src=SiteSearchV2Algo1

I have a gaming PC that I really only play a few things on. I've no console at all, my last console was the OG X1. I was thinking that I could trade it in towards the next gen console once it's released. It's been about 3 years since my Xbox died on me. Knowing the controller and games will work is a huge plus, I've been trying to find information but haven't found much confirming anything.

Living with console is what I want to know more about, are the load times bad? Does it still takes ages to install games? Are the games super massive files still? etc...

I could be wrong but I swear that Phil Spencer in an interview mentions that controllers and game will be forward compatible with the next gen...with a controller like the Xbox adaptive controller I sure do hope it works with next gen without any issues.

I’m not the best person to go to for details on game installations, I usually just let it download in the bg whilst I play or watch something else. I do have it set to do auto update, which can happen at anytime of the day or night, I've found it on occasion updating like at three in the morning, because I can hear my external drive hum a bit and is actually louder when playing any graphic intensive game (my ps pro at its quietest is still monumentally louder than said drive)

Load times is still game dependent, there notes that games on and external drive load up noticeably faster, because usb 3.

Games on the X can be quite big, like ReadDead 2, especially older titles like Halo 5 and Gears 4, which they’ve had many and major updates,

Only if cheap.
If not use your PC.

I'm thinking about it, specs are GTX 970 with an i7 4790k 4.0ghz and 16GB DDR3. Still a work horse but it's also a workstation, I'd like to spend a tad bit less time on my PC lol.

Ill look for deals or wait til E3.

Fair enough. You're been a big help Karma, seriously thank you. It sounds like a solid purchase, I've looked into the games and from what I can tell it's a decent selection. Battlefield 4 was my go to for ages with FIFA being right behind it. I think I'll invest in the Xbox Game Pass because then I'd have access to more games without having to buy them. Ill also look into the backwards compatibility of the controllers and what not.

I'm hoping Scarlett doesn't come til 2020, 2019 is a tad bit too soon I feel.

I'd hold on to the PC. I still get use of my PC with a GTX 470, lol. X is a great console, but it shouldnt beat out a 970 with an i7 4790.

That said- are you using the pc for anything other than gaming? Are you able to hook your PC up to your TV... Or want to. Do you like mods? I doo like the unified library with xbox and it's great with my 4k TV.

As much as I like my X, I'd say at least wait till the announce the next machine to see if it has what you want

I do know I'd rather game on console, but I can't deny the tech advantage a good PC can bring. Loop

Your welcome, I try :) 👍

GamePass is really good, especially if you enjoy MS first party games and third party games like Void Bastards and The Outer Wilds. And it’ll eventually include more games on pc, besides many “play anywhere” games, many first and some third party titles.

I use it for music production actually. That's not as intensive as other things I've dabbled in like coding but I play ArmA 3 with about 100 mods lol. Lots of custom missions, I don't do any multiplayer on PC really, I use PC gaming for my solo getaway. I have more flexibility and can enjoy it without dealing with other gamers, online lobbies etc... I'm deep into a few games but spending ALL my time on my PC has gotten a tad tiresome at times.

I miss FIFA, Battlefield 4(ONLY), Gears Ultimate and maybe one or two other games. I haven't had a chance to take a good look at the current roster of games, but I do know that I'm curious about the new Halo and I've been a long time Forza fan. I may wait for the E3 price drop and see how it's looking. You guys have been tremendous!! Really I was nervous I wouldn't know what to do, I miss my Xbox, but I don't want to rush it.

I've seen a few games I like there, the backwards compatibility makes it worth it. Lots of old games I love that I wouldn't mind playing again. I'll definitely look into the Play Anywhere feature, that sounds pretty cool. It's been a while but I'm catching up!!

The X was never worth it IMO. Even less so now with next gen coming next year most likely.

Honesty, I would say get a PS4 anyway. Tge Xbox exclusives are meh for the most part.

Like me, you don't really use the PC for gaming much. With a 4K TV, hell yes the X is worth it. Get Game pass and you'll be good to go. Waiting till next year for next gen is a pretty long ass wait, especially if you're into multiplayer games like Halo and Gears. So I say: Go for it.

Menace! Thank you, I'm looking into the PS library as well, the exclusives are what I'm eyeing and the I gotta say it seems like there is plenty to choose from. Outside of the major games like AA and AAA do you have any recommendations?

Pretty much, I love PC gaming but getting console ports is played out. ArmA 3 I've spent over 2500 hours on lol, that's the most demanding thing I play. I'm going to see what those deals are during E3 and make a decision. You guys have been awesome! Thank you so much!!

I have a high end PC, but I still game on my X1X the most (a lot on the PS4 pro as well). As a hardcore gamer, the purchase was a no-brainer for me. I've spent countless hours gaming on my X1X and don't regret buying at launch.

I just prefer most games on a console nowadays for various reasons. I use my PC for the turn based strategy games you can't find on console (Civilization, Battletech)

Of course on the flip side, do you need an X1X? Of course not.

As others have said, wait until e3 this weekend and see what happens. Project Scarlet is happening, but when is still up in the air. I highly doubt we see anything next gen before 2020, but who knows. We may or may not even get a date out of e3, but may as well wait and see what happens.

Go for it my dude. Pretty sure they're gonna announce a price drop on the One X if they haven't already at E3, so I'd wait for that.

I'm not gonna lie- I love the X and playing on my 4k tv @4k or at least higher than 1080p is just nice. Most games being at least 1440p and oftern above 1600p if they aren't 4k. I don't see any reason at all to get a base console other than trying to save a buck or two, but even then, I'd personally be constantly wishing it was an X, knowing there is a better option. And it really is substantially better than the base console.

I have a PS4 as well, and I love many of the exclusives, but once they are over, I always shift right back to my Xbox. I haven't turned on my PS4 since Spiderman... I should really give it some love...

That's me in a nutshell ha. Just enjoying playing games in 4k would be worth it, from what I read the difference between the base and X is night and day. I'm leaning towards getting the 1x next week because I've been sizing up the games and I like what I've been seeing. Thanks for chiming in Froz! Especially the PS4 part, I was wondering if it'd be worth it getting it for the exclusives and some indies.

Major thanks Frozpot!!!

Thanks Jin! I've been looking into the games and I think the X will still have plenty of value, I don't expect new consoles this year so this will definitely be a good time to jump back in.

I'm hoping 4k will be what everyone says it is!

You guys are the best, I really appreciate the input!!

Just remember all you are buying is a graphical upgrade really. Don't be one those who buys it then complains multiplayer games should be 60 FPS, etc.

I mostly agree with this, though there are a few examples of high frame-rate modes for the X and Pro. Notably Rage 2 (though 1080p, it's running 60fps against base console running at 30fps) and the Witcher 3(same, though it also has a 4k mode).

Even so, X games generally run more stable as well having higher settings.

Nah no complaints from me sir. I know that not everything will be peak performance. I'm not the best at noticing frames honestly, I can tell on PC but console? Eh. Graphically speaking yes, I also would like to watch some 4k content like shows and movies. MP for me is all about competition, I expect great visuals in my single player. Dragon Age, Mass Effect, The Division etc... Games where I can just zone out by myself(Single player) are where I would expect to see the biggest impact.

The reality check is good and I appreciate it Menace!!

If you can't wait, get it. If you can wait, don't get it.

Thanks Planview! I know exactly what you mean by that xD

Hope you've been well!!

I'm hoping for faster load times, not just with games but with the overall OS and what not. At the end of my X1's life it was slow as dirt, FIFA crashed frequently and I had an issue where my controller could NEVER hold a charge. Stability matters more than you know sir!! haha

THANK YOU SIR!

No problem 🙂

I’d say even if you were to get an X now, you’d prolly be alright for another 2-3 years at least. Next round of consoles are gonna launch 2020(?) and if prior gens are any indication, games that will be night and day diff. prolly won’t happen till a year or so in.

If you prefer gaming on consoles over PC...then yeah, the X will be worth it. I think buying a console late in its life cycle can be underrated. The fact you’ve been off the Xbox or any console platform means you’ll get more value than most out of Game Pass. In addition a bunch of great games not in Game Pass are super cheap now. Games most avid gamers have been paying full price for will be available to you at a fraction of the cost...which mitigates the fact you’re paying for a console later in its life cycle.

Going 18 months without a console if you’re a console gamer is a long time. If you trade it in and upgrade in late 2020, the X will have ended up costing you $200-$250 for that 18 months ($10-15 a month). All those games you bought cheap will come with you. That said, the X will be viable for a few years beyond the next gen launch if you don’t upgrade.

I'm hoping for faster load times, not just with games but with the overall OS and what not. At the end of my X1's life it was slow as dirt, FIFA crashed frequently and I had an issue where my controller could NEVER hold a charge. Stability matters more than you know sir!! haha

XIX doesn't do a ton for loading times. The hard drive is basically the same as the vanilla X1 (can't remember the exact specs). The way to increase loading times is getting an SSD.
