Well, it's official. I'm on vacation (two weeks!) and I'll be enjoy staying home with my wife and son. I'm not planning to go anywhere (as of right now). While it is true that I'll be having a lot of times to catch up with backlog of video games, I've also decided to workout as much as I can to get back into shape.

Admittedly, it is very difficult for me to go back to workout more often like I used to when I was younger. I used to weight 150lb and was thin. Now I'm 32yrs and weight ~180lb. Don't you think it's bit.. um... heavy for a guy who is 5'4? Anyone knows what is the requirement of weight for ~5'4?

I'm planning to cut down the amount of cokes as well (God, that'll be hard but I gonna have to!) and will definitely drink water every single day. I got a pair of 20lb dumbbells and will be using it during my workout plans.

So you're not looking to join a gym or anything? Just all at home stuff?

Good luck though man.

I'm going to do it at home. Save money and time. When I was younger, I used to workout pretty heavy and was in an excellent shape. What I did was: push-up, situp (knee-cross), worked with dumbbells, ate a lot of fruits and water like crazy, etc. I'm planning to do just that now. Plus there's a nice park near my home and I will go and walk around 2 or 3 times a week or something like that.

EDIT: I might take a picture of myself for you guys to see the process or something. That'll might help me as well.

Trying drinking close to a gallon of water a day (just keep refiling a water bottle) and do what you can to eat frequently throughout the day. More smaller meals throughout the day will get your metabolism going.

I'm about 5'10" and 185lb or so. Could definitely stand to lose some weight although it's pretty much all in my mid section. About all the exercise I do is bike in the summer or ski in the winter. Too lazy to do anything else really. Good luck.

One of the most important things you can do is listen to this clip everyday before your workouts...
:grin::bang:

good luck
I know how hard it is with children, I have three of them and I dont feel like doing s*** most of the time. I did get back into shape and lostabout 20 lbs and was feeling great than had another kid and it jammed up my routine. But it was all worth it.

Yeah, I know exactly how you feel. It's like my wife and son (and job) are draining my energy a lot for the past few years. I love them. :) I'm trying to find a way to get back on track and stay in shape before my health is getting worse.

The most common way of doing it (which is usually used by insurance companies as well) is starting at 5' and 105lbs, and adding 6 lbs for every inch over 5'. That is how 'ideal weight' is determined, but of course if you throw muscle on it skews it a bit.
Also, if you really don't have time, look into HIIT for your cardio, and intermittent fasting to get the diet on track.
And stop with the soda! :). That ends up being a crazy amount of high-glycemic calories in a short time. If you 'need' the carbonation try flavored seltzer, or a Stevia-sweetened no-calorie soda like Zevia.
Good luck and let us know how it's going.
Also, you've got kids, so it's not just for you anymore!

I disagree with this one. You don't need that and shouldn't do that.
'Should' depends on a lot of things. I only mention it because Smurf is obviously very pressed for time. The typical 'small frequent meal' approach. Is most likely not possible for him.

Regardless, fasting is not the answer.

A calorie deficit is one thing, but fasting is quite another.

I hear ya on getting back in shape. My wife just had our second child a week ago and I think I gained all the pregnancy weight! I've prolly gained about 20 lbs, I'm an even 6' and usually weigh a scale tipping 165lb or so, in the past 9 months. At least if we get a double blowout in the car I'll have us covered for the second spare :p I actually bought Yourself Fitness 2012 and have been doing that for the past 3 weeks now. I figure I can prolly be back into shape by spring time now that I'm gonna have a limited social life again for a while...

Do you know what intermittent fasting is? There are different ways of doing it, but the simplest is eating all your daily calories in an 8 hour period, and not eating the other 16.

It's not fasting in the usual sense.

Just saying either way that sounds like a terrible idea.

Oh I know that feeling, about trying to get in better shape.
Over the years only thing that has grown is my belly (soda and Mcdonalds, even tho I don`t eat too much on Mcdonalds anymore ).
Then I`m doing training for a few months and back to being lazy again, and repeating again, hope turns out better for you.

Good luck Smurf, I know it can be tough. I'm 5'8 and used to weigh freakin 230. I cut out the cokes and (most ) of the bad food, got about 30 minutes of exercise a day. It took me about 6-8 months but I got down to 155 and have stayed that weight for the last 5 years.

Once you get to where to want to be, you will feel so much better.

230 to 155 by just cutting out most of the bad food and exercising 30 minutes a day is quite impressive. Well done.
