TOKYO, March 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. today announced that Jack Tretton will step down from his role as President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) as of March 31, 2014. This is a result of a mutual agreement between Mr. Tretton and SCEA not to renew their contractual relationship.

Shawn Layden, currently Executive Vice President and COO of Sony Network Entertainment International, will become President and CEO of SCEA, effective April 1, 2014.

Why? I liked him, he was a cool dude.

Going to be weird seeing someone else in the position.

PlayStation Nation,

It is with mixed feelings that I inform you that I will be stepping down as President and CEO of SCEA effective March 31, 2014. This is a result of a mutual agreement with SCEA, and I leave knowing that the PlayStation brand has never been stronger, PlayStation 4 momentum continues to accelerate, and the future will only get brighter for our gamers.
Serving PlayStation fans for the past 19 years has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my career. Your passion for gaming inspired me every day.

I want to thank you for constantly pushing PlayStation to deliver breakthrough gaming and entertainment experiences, and to never settle for “good enough.” The embodiment of this commitment can be found in the PS4, which has quickly become the #1 next-gen console worldwide…thanks to you.

We’ve shared many memories over the past two decades and I’ll always be grateful for your support.

Thank you,

Jack Tretton

that would be straight up entertaining, he's being praised now but i can imagine the reverse hold he wasn't that so good insults coming his way for ps3 lol

sad news tho

Vita blowback?

Tretton in comparing the Vita to the 3DS:
Our view of the 'Game Boy experience' is that it's a great babysitting tool, something young kids do on airplanes, but no self-respecting twenty-something is going to be sitting on an airplane with one of those. He's too old for that.

Aw, I liked him. He sure did a good job at the E3 unvieling. Oh well, off to Zynga, I guess.

Looks like Jack Tretton really dropped the mic on this one.

Let this be a lesson to all to never fling the mic with a awakward hmmph while doing it

I don't think there would have been a better time for him personally to leave if he was looking for a new opportunity. He was part of the most successful console launch in the history of gaming so I would guess this was the right time to look for something with a more financially stable company.

He comes across as a total arrogant ass to me. Look at that Nintendo DS quote.

Tons of "20 something" Sony fans are avid Nintendo portable gaming system fans.. even would use them on a train. Basically insulted a large swath of his constituents.. and it's not just one comment, it's his and Sony's entire upper management in the Playstation division's strategy as far as I can tell. Half of their smarmy jokes would be offensive to the gamers lapping it all up if they paid any attention.

"Haha look at us trading a game disk!" (tee hee, wonder if these idiots realize The Last of Us comes out tomorrow with a $10 online pass, and that we are the only console manufacturer to charge used game buyers for features!)

Here's some info on Shawn Layden, who will be taking over his spot:

A 15-year PlayStation veteran, Layden was one of the founding members of SNEI in 2010, joining the company directly from Sony Computer Entertainment, where he most recently held the position of President, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan. His career at Sony Computer Entertainment also included eight years at SCE Worldwide Studios in London where he directed international software development.

Tretton sold millions of PS4's in NA, he walked in with the... time to get payed attitude perhaps. he is quite serious, and I coud see him doing that. Nothing wrong with that, he has this on his resume, he will probably be annouced somewhere else soon.

Interesting news. Basically comes down to this:

1. Jack isn't getting what he wants or doesn't like something about PS so he's bailing ship
2. Sony is forcing him out
3. Jack has something lined up and is leaving for another company which will come public within the next few weeks (assuming he wants to work at a new place soon)

Typically, high level execs take lots of time to court and hire so if he ends up somewhere in the very near future it means he's been working on getting a new job for a while. If he doesn't get a new gig for a while, it means he left on his own or got pushed out without a new job to go to.

Jack Tretton was forced out by The Last of Us directors Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley.

Hopefully this isn't the beginning of the downfall like Xbox was when J Allard left.

Big loss for Sony. Tretton was the man and hands down the best E3 speaker of all time. 19 years of solid work though. It's been an impressive run. Congrats Jack.
