PlayStation Now first launched five years ago, but still has fewer than 1m subscribers. Mr Ryan said that customer feedback suggested Sony had solved some of its early technical and performance issues but still needed to “work a little harder on the content proposition and we need to look at the overall value proposition”.

“We are getting more confident with the [PlayStation Now] service and we are really going to start to push it hard this year and in years to follow,” he said. The service is set to launch in several new European countries later this year.

However, despite striking a new alliance with Microsoft that could help extend the reach of Sony’s cloud services, Mr Ryan sought to quash some of the games industry speculation that has emerged since the plan to collaborate was revealed in May, to the surprise of many observers.

“There is to my knowledge . . . no scenario where the PlayStation and Xbox platforms combine,” he said. “The two platforms will remain separate with their own separate identities and brands and fans.”

As it should be. We need them both competing.

Streaming games stinks. It stinks over the local network, and it stinks over the internet. Playing any kind of game that requires precise control response is going to be unplayable. Also, the internet is a unpredictable space, network conditions can change at ANY time and at ANY place in between you (and including at the endpoints) and the streaming services servers.

Wait wasn't something claiming PS Now was well ahead of other services like Game Pass?

Spencer said on GiantBomb that GP has several million subscribers and Now is under 1M.

Also f*** streaming games
